About the owner: Don and Warren began restoring this beautiful home over 20 years ago. It has operated as a bed and breakfast since the day they moved in. Don is from northern Pennsylvania and Warren from Connecticut. When they met both knew that they wanted to restore houses, the added benefit of restoring The Gables has been meeting all the wonderful people that have stayed in the past and continue to come back year after year. The University of Pennsylvania has been a great source of international people which keeps conversation at the breakfast table fascinating. Don and Warren were married in the spring of 2013 in upstate New York about 1/2 hour from where Don grew up. We love the mountains and plan on retiring to the area. We also have a cottage outside of Gettysburg which is our retreat from the city. We both get complete enjoyment from singing with our church choir. We belong to a very progressive center city church, you will often find us feeding the hungry of the city or working toward bringing human rights to our community and world. Racial, ethnic, economic and sexual diversity has become the treasure in our lives that we most cherish.
Why the Owner Chose Philadelphia:
The Gables is situated in a very eclectic neighborhood of wonderful Victorian homes, many have been restored, some still need love. It is a community of all kinds of people--young students, retired, new families, empty nesters, rich, poor, straight, gay, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Jew, Christian, Muslim, believers and non-believers, blue collar and executives. And it all works!!! We love the diversity. We love old homes. We love Philadelphia with all the opportunities for theater, music, the arts. There are so many museums and cultural events and they are all so easy to get to either by car or public transportation. Nothing is too far away.
The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
The Gables is a big Victorian home on six city lots, so there is extra green space. We have a garden in the side yard with hammock and sitting areas. The extra property also provides parking for 6-8 cars and if that is full, there is free street parking. Not all bed and breakfasts offer a full breakfast each morning, however, at The Gables you will find a complete breakfast every day of the week. We offer muffins and fruit, juice, coffee and tea along with a vegetarian hot dish of some sort. Meat or fish is served on the side. There is always an assortment of cereal, breads, jam and yogurt.
