WHY COME TO SAN LUIS OBISPO???
Founded in 1772 as a mission community, San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest towns in California. Nicknamed “SLO,” it’s located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and has a thriving downtown. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is its centerpiece. It was the original mission of the city, and has been completely restored and now houses a museum. Near the mission, you can wander through posh boutique shops and dine at upscale restaurants.
San Luis Obispo is almost perpetually sunny, with more than 300 rain-free days every year. The city is bisected by a string of hills known as the Nine Sisters, and six of these are open for climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. And with the Pacific coastline and beaches 10 miles away, people flock here to go windsurfing, kayaking, surfing, and kiteboarding. Also nearby is the resort town of Avila Beach, famous for its hot mineral springs.
San Luis Obispo made international headlines in 1990 when it became the first place in the world to ban smoking in all public buildings, including bars and restaurants. This action sparked worldwide antismoking laws, and today, it’s a citable offense to smoke in public at all in SLO. Shoppers must bring their own shoping bags since plastic bags were banned in 2012. Considering the city’s famously strict health codes, it’s a delightful surprise that Bubble Gum Alley exists here. Locals and visitors have been sticking their chewed gum on Bubble Gum Alley’s walls since about 1960, and in turn, the alley is now a massive, mosaic-like public artwork that is at once beautiful and grotesque.

Warning: Do not stay at this house if you are scouting the area for retirement potential. That was our mission during our visit, and John's and Kay's house set too high of a standard! There were absolutely no disappointments in our five night stay except that we couldn't stay longer. The house was perfectly equipped and very comfortable. We felt the art and family photos created a very warm environment. The house provides access and views to the outside from every room. The views are amazing, and the yard and deck provide many places to sit and take advantage of it in absolute privacy. The hot tub was heavenly. The VRBO write up didn't mention the 130 acres of open space right outside the door. We took the car out just twice during our visit. For walkers, it was an easy jaunt to stores, restaurants, and shopping. And we spent hours roaming the trails in the amazing open space of San Luis Obispo. Views, wild flowers, and friendly outdoor enthusiasts abound. We enjoyed cooking in and took advantage of the BBQ. The kitchen had all the pots, pans, and gadgets we needed. We ate dinner out one night and would highly recommend Big Sky! Oh, and stop by the House of Breads for cinnamon rolls. Thanks, John and Kay, for sharing your home. We will be back, and we will highly recommend your home to our traveler friends.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, people with disabilities, sightseeing, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you. Our house is not a 5 star resort but we think it is a great place to get the feel of what it is like to live in San Luis Obispo. We are so glad that it was a suitable for your visit here. SLO is a town of good people that enjoy the outdoors and you fit in perfectly. Please visit us again.

This eclectic little house is perfect for a stress free get away. We went with our good friends and hardly went inside the house. This view a spectacular and mesmerizing. The house was literally 5 mins from downtown and there is a hiking path right down the street from the property. We went on a beautiful hike and ran up the steep driveway to finish off a great workout. Later we sat in the hot tub and enjoyed each others company. It truly was a perfect weekend. I want to go back soon.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We are parents, with two adult children. For a week, we shared the house with our daughter and her husband. This is a beautiful, convenient location which offered us everything we wanted. Our extended family gathered here many times and felt at home. Our parties were elegant and the amenities were just what we needed. We cooked, entertained and relaxed. Could not have been better. We entertained from 12 to 30 at our various brunches and suppers. Very nice place to be, Several guests asked for the "tour" as they make plans for their own future events in SLO. You will see us and our relatives and friends again and again. Thanks for our new SLO home away from home.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We were so pleased with this house and its terrific views that we didin't see nearly as much of the SLO area as we had planned! The house is charming and comfortable and filled with art and objects to entertain the eye. All the necessities needed for an extended stay are provided. And that wonderful deck and view! Sometimes a P & J sandwich was better than leaving and driving to dinner, although the owners provide many fine recommendations for restaurants and wine-tasting. We will happily return and hope to find Kitty waiting at the kitchen door.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My husband and I loved our stay in SLO and loved our time in this wonderful house on the hill. We were celebrating my husband's recent MBA and both recovering from a long semester of grad school. This was the perfect place for us. We bought groceries and cooked many meals at the house. The kitchen is well-equipped and we enjoyed eating on the patio while taking in the amazing views. The location makes this a great base for a morning run through SLO. The driveway is not to be taken lightly - definitely a good challenge for the end of your run! We had a great time exploring SLO and the surrounding communities with the added benefit of John and Kay's wonderful recommendations. We can't wait to come back and hit the trails and beaches. The house and hosts make this a wonderful choice for your next trip to SLO.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Amber and JD, When you left you said is was your best vacation ever. We are happy that our home contributed to that. Please return.

We loved our two week stay at this home! Very private setting, with cattle and deer out back, and crowing roosters down the hill! Kitty was the purrfect on-site hostess to supplement John's and Kay's hospitality:-) The night view overlooking the town was a most welcome site after an active day! We loved walking around the town from this home's location. The driveway is described accurately. Each morning we went out for a walk, and the hike back up was a grueling end to our workout! Not for the faint of heart, but you could easily park at the bottom of the hill and walk from there. As one reviewer mentioned, this is the owners' primary residence. As such their belongings are in the closets. I was initially taken aback since we had never run into this in a vacation rental. But they had cleared space to allow us to unpack. We never felt put upon by their things, which were hidden behind fabric drapes. No personal items were left sitting out. The same reviewer mentioned the owners camping in their Airstream. This home sits atop a hill on over 5 acres. The Airstream sits at the bottom of the hill, and can't be seen from anywhere within the home. It wasn't even on the property for most of our stay. We don't know whether they stayed in that Airstream, but we do know that John and Kay always respected our privacy. A couple of times over the two weeks John called in advance to set up a time to come water outdoor plants. Other than that, we had the place to ourselves. The owners were very flexible with us. We originally rented just one of the bedrooms. A week before we came we found that our daughter could join us for one night, and they opened the other bedroom and welcomed her warmly. Overall, we had a relaxing two weeks, and would stay here again!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay in our home. You sure explored SLO on foot and got a real feel for our town. Please return.

We wanted to see what the SLO life was all about, so we chose this AMAZING home in San Luis Obispo. We were looking for peace and quiet, yet having the ability to be close to plenty of activities. This home definitely had what we needed! The views are wonderful. We sat outside on the deck every morning with Kitty and had breakfast. We loved her company! It was so peaceful, and we could not ask for better weather either. I enjoyed the artwork throughout the home. It gave the place warmth and style. You can easily go hiking, biking, shop, hit the beaches, and tour the local wineries! Everything is close! If you want to RELAX and have plenty around you MUST check this place out! Thanks John and Kay for sharing! It was a pleasure meeting you.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

This tidy vintage adobe high on a hill has beautiful views in each direction, and is charming and roomy inside. Decorative and architectural details abound, and the plantings around the house all combined for a tranquil and private stay. The home is well-stocked and has every amenity one could require. As noted in other reviews, do not be wary of the semi-commercial street off of which you turn to reach the house; the driveway is long and climbs to a secluded lot which borders an open preserve. A five minute drive brings you to the awesome downtown of SLO, or to the freeway. In all, a convenient retreat.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you. Our modest home is acutally built from recycled wood from the bleachers of the 1920 Exposition Raceway which was an early automobile race track. I will post a photo of bleacher seat number 4 that is exposed behind the plaster in our living room. The seats were used as lathing in our home. Again, we are glad that you had a good stay in SLO and that you appreciate the unique nature of our vacational rental.

About the owner: We retired from our business in 2004 and set sail for Mexico for two years. We have sold our sailboat and now enjoy camping in our vintage Airstream primarilly in the southwestern parts of USA. We are active members of our community and enjoy life in SLO.
