Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: Susan and Tim met and married in Hawaii in 2008. Although they both grew up in California, and both love the ocean, Susan spent 13 years living and working in Switzerland, and speaks fluent German, while Tim has lived and worked in Hawaii for over 40 years. Tim introduced Susan to surfing, and Susan introduced Tim to scuba diving. Hawaii has a mixture of big swells and flat times, so they switch between surfing and diving - they both love being in the ocean!
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Kona Ocean View Properties:
Susan originally bought this home because it has great sunset views almost year-round, cool breezes from the trade winds, and lots of fruit for her to enjoy from the mature fruit trees. When Susan and Tim met and married, they decided to renovate and turn it into a vacation rental. Susan made the major design decisions: enlarge the kitchen, add the large west back lanai, and add the guest suite; Tim did the rest, including the concrete slab, framing, tile work, bathroom cabinetry, and roof. Tim's passions are surfing and wood working; he made the koa bar and shelf in the living/dining great room, all the bathroom vanities and the personal storage niche in the master bathroom, the upper private storage units in the kitchen and guest suite, the clerestory window between the kitchen and guest bath and all the redwood window sills and wood trim in the house!!! Susan and Tim both love the ocean, and enjoy sunset views and cool trade wind breezes almost every evening. They also enjoy having only short drives to their favorite surfing and scuba diving spots.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love to go out in the early morning and pick papayas or pick up ripe lilikoi for our morning smoothies. Sometimes the wild turkeys are walking down the road, and it's great to experience the year unfold as the turkey chicks grow up. Once Susan heard something on the roof, and came out on the front lanai to take a look. As she looked up, a turkey looked over the edge of the roof, startling them both! This home is located in a lovely and quiet residential neighborhood.
