Elaine's Prairie Home: Country Living in the Flint Hills !
- Minimum stay:Contact manager

- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Those who have been here know: Not much beats the tallgrass prairie in serene beauty. The Flint Hillls in east-central Kansas were never plowed, and now form the last remaining of America’s original “sea of grass” where hundreds of thousands cattle roam almost like in the old days the buffalo. The prairie offers stunning views as well as pastoral settings along its many creeks and rivers.
At the edge of the small town Matfield Green Elaine’s two-story home is available for weekenders and vacationers, or for an extended stay.
The house is idyllic and comfortable, restored with a good eye and with the wise use of original materials.
Filled with the work of regional artists and lots of books, this home is a wonderful getaway for artists and writers.
The two bedrooms and bathrooms, and the living and open kitchen are pleasantly furnished with well-chosen regional antiques. Two porches and a large and well-maintained garden allow for great comfort outdoors.
The tracks of the old Santa Fe railroad are nearby. The house is located on the north side of town just off Highway #177, a National Scenic Byway.

The Kansas prairie and Elaine's Prairie Home really welcomed us and gave us such peace. This home is filled with joy - simple yet elegant. We enjoyed evenings on the porch outside the kitchen, early morning walks on the free range, Pioneer Bluffs art, Ad Astra food, Tallgrass Prairie views - but most of all we enjoyed the tranquility of Matfield Green.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you! We - in Matfield Green, Chase County - love guests like you who appreciate and enjoy all we have to offer. The prairie will welcome you back anytime.

We had planned just a one night stay but decided on the spot to extend our visit, to stop traveling, and spend four more days on the prairie instead. The splendid and as far as we know unique grasslands landscape is worth a vacation--and the house is too good to use only for spending a night. Amazing what the owner did to create great comfort in an old time athmosphere. We were given a map for auto tours and areas to hike on the open range. What an experience, especially in the spring when hundreds of thousands of young steers are roaming. The locals call them "beef on the hoof" and they are so peaceful, and curious, too--they love to see new faces. Our promise to ourselves: we'll do this again. Our recommendation: take plenty of time to get off the highway and explore the views and enjoy the fresh air, an be happy ! Elaine's Prairie Home is a delight for the eyes, the heart and the soul. I've stayed there several times and never tire of the house and its beautiful contents. I especially enjoyed watching birds while eating breakfast on the deck outside the kitchen. Use this house as your base as you explore the beauty of the Flint Hills -- and don't forget to explore Pioneer Bluffs and contemporary art at The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs about a mile north, and the picturesque county seat of Cottonwood Falls about 15 miles to the north (the weekly music jams in Cottonwood are lots of fun). All highly recommended!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My wife and I are both artists who stayed here in June of 2011 while on a drawing and painting trip to the Flint Hills. The house is an inspiration and contributed to our prairie experience with each room containing fascinating books, photography and art. We spent our days out in the hills and our evenings in the house, completing pieces of art or just enjoying our surroundings. There's a great bar/grill down the street or you can cook at the house. The house is two stories with a lovely staircase, little nooks and crannies, and just a joy to be in. Closeby are beautiful small towns, winding dirt roads with stunning scenery and the Pioneer Bluffs Art Gallery. We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
