Built in 1890 by Robert Todd Lincoln's best friend and law partner, the Edward S. Isham House is only 1.5 miles from the heart of Manchester Village with its charming boutiques and galleries. Walk down the marble sidewalks of Manchester to enjoy excellent restaurants, a wonderful bookstore, perfect cafes, and some of the finest outlet shopping available anywhere. The Isham House is nestled in the valley between the 3,816 foot Mount Equinox and the imposing Green Mountains. From the front-door of the Isham House, you can go hiking, biking, kayaking, or fly-fishing on the famous Battenkill River. Located on the main road passable in all weather, the Isham House is only a 10 minute drive from Bromley and 20 minutes away from Stratton ski area. If you prefer, walk around the corner to Hildene -- Robert Todd Lincoln's estate -- and take a tour of its lovely Georgian mansion, or go cross country skiing through its groomed trails and finish with a hot chocolate in its quaint warming hut.

A Day at the Isham House -- Autumn: Wake up and make yourself a cup of coffee while you fire up the wood-burning stove. Put on an old LP and make a hearty Vermont breakfast. Then put on your boots and walk left out of the house to the back entrance to Hildene -- Robert Todd Lincoln's estate. Walk down the long dirt road and enjoy the leaves turning. Walk through the Farm Loop and pet the goats, pigs, cows. Take a hiking path back to the house and drive to town to shop at the Orvis, Armani, Coach, Brooks Brothers, GAP, Banana Republic, Hickey Freeman etc. outlets. Eat lunch at the Spiral Press Cafe in the best bookstore around -- the Northshire. Next walk up the road to Manchester Village and experience the prettiest stretch of homes in America. Walk into the Equinox Hotel to get a hiking map of the Equinox Preserve. After an unbelievable hike around Equinox Pond, relax with a massage at their world-class spa, or return home for a warm cider, board games and a peaceful night's sleep.

A Day at the Isham House -- Winter: There's no better place to be than Vermont in winter. Wake up early and hit the slopes at Bromley or Stratton. Come back to Manchester Center and walk through the town to plot your outlet shopping strategy. Get some mac 'n cheese and plum pie at The Lawyer & The Baker Cafe. Go back home and take a jacuzzi bath to soothe your tired muscles. Start some dinner while you relax in front of the wood-burning stove and listen to your iPod through the stereo system. Have a big dinner in the dining area and flip on the outside lights so you can watch the snow fall in the backyard and blanket the mountains. If you have the energy, go see a movie in town, or maybe just watch a DVD at home under the covers.

A Day at the Isham House -- Spring & Summer: The sun is up early in Vermont, and that's good because there's too much to do. Eat breakfast out on the deck with a view of the Green Mountains just across the valley floor. If you fly-fish, you're in heaven. The Battenkill River in all its beauty is no more than a few minutes drive away. Even if you don't fish, drive south down Route 7A and rent a canoe or kayak to treat yourself to a lovely float down the river through quiet cow pastures and pristine forest passes. Hike along the Appalachian Trail that transects the town, or drive ten minutes down the road to The Quarry in Dorset -- an abandoned marble quarry with unimaginably deep, spring-fed waters surrounded by a hundred years of impromptu sculptures and carvings like 'Jack+Helen 1929.' Of course, you're just down the road from the Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset -- the site of the annual horse show. Come back home, BBQ on the deck, and have a drink as the stars come out.

We had such a fabulous stay at the Edward Isham House. We came to ski at Bromley Mt and found travel between the two easy and appreciated the house's proximity to Manchester Center. The house surpassed our expectations in every way. It was immaculate, very well appointed, and had a cozy feel despite its large size. I don't think the photos do it justice!! The layout was perfect for two families with the kids enjoying their space in the loft, and the adults relaxing by the wood stove downstairs. The owners provided excellent and flexible customer service before and during our stay making us feel most welcome. I highly recommend this property and we're already talking about making our visit an annual tradition!

We spent the week between Christmas and New Year's day at the Isham house and had a great time at this interesting and unique home. Our party consisted of 6 adults, 4 children and 2 dogs. The rental more than met our every need. It was spacious and comfortable. The owner has stocked the house with numerous extras that one would not expect in a rental property. The kitchen was better equipped than any property we have rented. It is obvious that the owner takes pride in this house, and tries to make renters as comfortable as possible. In addition, the owner and his support staff were extremely accommodating in every way. What more could we have asked for? Nothing except more snow.

My wife, son, in-laws and I spent a long weekend at Isham house last ski season. Our stay was fantastic. The home is beautiful, comfortable and well equipped. We were delighted to find lots of toys and a fun loft play area for our son. The owner was very accommodating and was basically our personal concierge for all our needs and questions. The location is great for access to downtown Manchester and local ski areas. We will definitely be back for a winter and/or summer stay.

The house was perfect for the 8 of us...grandparents/children and grandchildren! The bonus room, deck, kitchen & dining room were perfect for a family of diverse ages to enjoy. Plenty of space for all with a welcoming decor. The owners provided everything you would want in the rental--including items in baths and the frig you wouldn't expect. Made life allot easier for shopping for kitchen supplies. The home is in close proximity to town and places of interest--including the nearby Hildene and Ormsby Farm were sites not to be missed. Can't say enough good things about the home. Extremely clean and well-supplied baths, bedrooms, etc. Wouldn't hesitate to come back for another visit. Thank you! We stayed (two families, 9 people) over the Presidents week and could not have been more pleased. The house is large and comfortable with a great location just outside of Manchester. The owner was great and offered us a discounted night should we be snowed in on the last day of our stay. I would and have recommended this house to friends and family.

We spent a week at the house between Christmas and New Year. The house was a nice size for two families of 4 and had everything you needed to cook for ourselves. The heating worked well, which was just as well, as it was freezing, and we enjoyed the wood burning stove. The village had a good number of restaurants and shops including a great book store. Would stay again in the summer or winter.

The Edward S. Isham Carriage House was an ideal house for us 9 bicyclists. The floor plan allowed us to get together as a whole group, small group, or to find our "own space". The bedrooms were furnished with king, queen, and single beds, so both couples and singles were accommodated. There is a lot of floor space for overflow sleeping. And the new couches were very comfy! The 3 bathrooms were very accommodating. Since we made all our breakfasts and dinners at the house, the dining and kitchen facilities were very important. Both were spacious and very well supplied. We appreciated the kitchen eating area for breakfasts and as a gathering place. The outdoor deck and grill were a big plus. There is ample parking in the back and the large grounds made a great whiffle ball field. It is located right on a busy road and the summer traffic starts at 5:30 am. If you're an early riser, you may not need an alarm clock. The house is a renovated carriage house, with a lot of character and all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. The Manchester area has much to offer, and this residence is central to it all. Jed, the owner, couldn't be more available, considerate, and accommodating, and that is essential to having an enjoyable stay. We will return.

We just got back from another great vacation spent at the Isham Carriage House. This is the second year in a row we have rented for presidents week and it could not get any better. The house is immaculate, completely equipped, comfortable and a great place to relax and get away. It is close to town, skiing and amazing hikes. Jed, the owner, is a pleasure to rent from and truly wants you to have an amazing stay. We love Manchester and have rented other homes but none can compare to the Isham House or it's owners! Thanks Jed.

If you are lucky enough to book at the Isham Carriage House you will find yourself in for a great treat. Not only is the house really comfortable, charming totally updated and equipped, but Jed Silverstein who owns it is a superb caretaker. His goal is to make sure you have a wonderful time and if there is anything that he can do or provide for belive me he will- in the most charming way! I have had a lot of experince with rentals being in the real estate business myself, and believe me this rates an A+. The location is excellent- 5 minutes from town and 15 minutes to Bromely - a bit futher to Stratton. I would so hightly recommend this property and in fact do because I believe everyone will enjoy it as much as we have! It is the best expeiernce you can have. Enjoy!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1991

About the owner: My wife, Lilli, and I live in Westchester County just north of New York City. She is a professional organizer, and I teach English and philosophy at a prep school in the Bronx. We love to hike in Vermont with our standard poodle, Rufus, and look for out of the way swimmin' holes. My family has owned the Isham house for the last twenty years, and we take a tremendous amount of pride and joy in offering it to other families to enjoy.

Why the Owner Chose Manchester Village:
We converted the Isham House into a home because the area offered us a rare mix of outdoor activities, culture, history, and outlet shopping (!).

The Unique Benefits at this Barn:
We love to hike and swim, and love to tell our guests about all the off the beaten path places we cherish.
