These captivating one bedroom cottages are built of local materials and nestled in the oaks above our farm. Expect a retreat spot with spectacular views of Pacific sunsets, coastal oaks and redwoods, and the surrounding Santa Lucia mountain range. For those of you “ecologically minded” folk, our guests' stay is fully sustained by solar power and a spring-fed stream. The cottages sleep two persons, have internet access and a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. There is a queen futon which converts into a bed for extra guests. We have just installed beautiful NEW BAMBOO FLOORING in both cottages, adding charm and comfort to your stay!
Beauty, peace, and serenity are the themes of your stay. Nature abounds not only in the special setting of the cottages and their views, but also on our fifty acres of property. Organic Meyer lemons, fruit trees, and berries in season delight the senses and tempt the palate. Most guests are drawn to our property as a place to renew and refresh away from the fast pace of urban life.
FOR THE ADVENTUROUS TRAVELER
This destination is for the adventurous traveler. Our farm and cottages are located 12 miles south of Carmel, California off scenic Highway One, two miles from the coast on a paved road and one mile on an all year round good, in some places bumpy dirt road. Upon leaving the coastal highway the anticipation builds as you drive through a gorgeous old growth redwood canyon, then leave the pavement for the last short mile on a hard-packed dirt road, and suddenly arrive to experience the wonders of Country Flat Farm. We recommend an all wheel drive vehicle for your comfort. All visitors are met by the owners on the paved road and guided to the cottage upon first arriving. Please look us up online at countryflatfarm.
(This property is owned and operated by Rotarians.)
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE COTTAGES
Our cottages are furnished with 'country charm.' Lush towels and individual bathrobes are provided. The beds feature a brand new queen mattress crafted by a local company. Allergy free comforters warm you as you snuggle under tastefully chosen sheets and quilts. We have the latest high-tech fireplace heater that looks like a wood-burning fireplace, without the hassle. We have recently installed beautiful new bamboo floors that increase charm and comfort for our guests. There is no tv, phone, or cell phone service so please plan accordingly . There is, however, internet access so that you may use your computer to communicate with the outside world if necessary. If you want to watch movies we ask that you bring your own DVD's rather than download them from the internet. The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, toaster, dishes, cutlery, glasses, dishtowels, pots and pans, coffee maker, and tea kettle. All you need to bring is your own food and drink. The owners are beekeepers, so fresh sage honey is available for our guests.
THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA
There are wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities near the property and to the north and south off of Highway One. Hiking trails abound in the Palo Colorado area where we are located. Access to the Ventana Wilderness is 7 miles away. The Monterey Peninsula is only 12 miles to the north and Big Sur 13 miles to the south. Both destinations offer amazing restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, golfing, biking, and surfing. Additionally, Monterey hosts the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium.

For those who wish to escape the busyness of the world they live in, Country Flat Farm is perfect. If you have dreamed of a true escape from the routine of a working life, make a reservation today---do not delay! Had we known in advance about the wonder and glorious environment of Country Flat Farm, we would have stayed longer. Our advice to you---stay a minimum of four nights! The rain during our stay simply added charm to the enchantment. As a little girl, I always enjoyed Fairytales; at Country Flat, my husband and I lived within a Fairytale! The ride up the hill was a bit precarious, but if we had followed the advice of the owners, we would have been far more comfortable. Nonetheless, once we arrived, the trip up the hill was nothing more than a minor glitch---the surreal beauty of the surroundings was definitely worth the trip. Although we have traveled to Big Sur for ten years, this was our first trip to Country Flat, but it will not be our last. We plan to visit there each year! More advice: Be prepared for a somewhat chilly bathroom, but a hot shower will warm it up quickly! Take some food to cook---we never left the farm once we landed! The farm eggs and honey added delicious touches to our meals, and the owners do a great job of meeting their guests every need! We hope you will visit Country Flat Farm soon; your stay will serve to build beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Return as often as possible---it is a paradise on earth, perhaps a glimpse of what God has in store for our eternal home!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at this wonderful cottage so we could explore the Big Sur coastline before a week in San Francisco. Peter and Janie are great hosts and very organized from the first communincation via email inquiring about a stay at their farm. The cottage is very cozy and has everything you need. We enjoyed the fresh honey and eggs that were provided. The bed was comfy and the kitchen was well equiped to fix all meals. The best part were the beautiful sunsets and gorgeous views. The drive up is a bit daunting the first time but not so bad after that. We so enjoyed hiking in the Big Sur region and definitely recommend a tour of the Point Sur lighthouse (check the schedule) and Point Lobos State park. We definitely recommend a stay here and we hope we are able to return for another stay someday.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

These past few days have been so peaceful at Country Flat! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can truly say that we feel completely renewed and recharged from our LA life. Once you arrive on Palo Colorodo you feel as if your in a magical place in the redwoods going towards the farm. The steep road is not bad at all just take it slow in first gear and you'll arrive just fine, you won't regret it once you get your eye on the prize! The farm Peter and Janie own is spectacular, the views from the cozy luxurious cabins are superb! We were truly thankful to have experienced total bliss, drinking hot chocolate overlooking the redwoods and the Pacific Ocean. The cabins are identical so it doesn't really matter which one you end up in, you'll get the same experience with both. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the cooking utensils you'll need, we prepared very tasty meals and used the fresh farm eggs and honey that were provided for us. Janie is very detailed she truly knows how to mix luxury and comfort all in one shot. The bed was so comfy we didn't even want to get up after our hike down to the waterfall. The pillows were so plush for a good nights rest, even bathrobes were provided. The bear claw tub is incredible with an excellent view, we truly enjoyed baths here. Everybody around the farm is friendly and Adam from Ohio was very nice in showing us around, we even ran into Janie and Bella. This getaway is perfect for adventure seekers that also want to relax. We will definitely be back soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Everything about this lovely cottage was perfect--the hosts, the view, the deck, the comfy bed,the fireplace, the claw foot tub, the fresh eggs,, the sweet honey made by the hosts, etc. The grounds are gorgeous and just overflowing with lemons, limes, oranges and avocados. There is such a welcoming feeling to explore the grounds. Janie and Peter are the loveliest of people. We had bought a live crab in our travels and they set us up with everything we needed to prepare a memorable meal. We stayed 2 days but wished we could have stayed a week, a month, a year.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We had a very nice stay at Country Flat Farm. The property is a bit of a trek from any direction you may come from, including a bumpy dirt road at the end, but it really is worth it! It was about 30 minutes into town (Big Sur) or about the same up to Carmel. The view down the canyon to the sea is top notch, and Peter, one of the owners, suggested and described a moderate hike to a waterfall right there on their property. It turned out to be through stunning, enormous old redwoods and was a perfect mid-day jaunt. The bath was so lovely and the kitchen had everything we needed. Out the big window we saw more bird species than we could count, and two bobcats too. Our only wish (and the one missing star from our perspective) would be for a slightly more comfortable bed. We know there's a lot of differing opinions out there about mattresses, but we found this one more hard than firm over three nights. Communication with Peter and Janie was easy and their orchards were lovely and tranquil. We really appreciate the efforts of keeping the property "green," including running off solar power and composting. Definitely recommended!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We stayed in the East of Eden cabin over the MLK Jr weekend and it was even better than we thought it would be! The host was very communicative leading up to our stay, so we had no problem preparing for our visit and it was easy as pie to find the place (the drive was gorgeous - but as they'll tell you, it's up a winding, uneven dirt road, so if you don't have 4WD, which we didn't, you just have to take it really slow and probably drive in a lower gear - make sure you arrange to arrive before dark!). Once we were in the cabin, we didn't want to leave! It's basically a studio setup, with a little alcove for the very comfy bed. We watched 2 incredible sunrises and sunsets from the futon in front of the picture windows - the views are breathtaking! We wandered around the farm, fed the chickens, picked a few lemons, and enjoyed fresh hen eggs for breakfast both days. We cooked all of our meals at the cottage in the well-stocked kitchen, listened to our iPod using the iPod setup they had available, read books, drank lots of wine, took bubble baths, padded around in the robes we found in the closet, played Scrabble on the carpet, wrote, relaxed on the gravity chairs on the deck, and even had a few turns on the various rope swings around the property. All in all, this was a PERFECT getaway - romantic, secluded (even though there is another cabin right next door, we only saw its inhabitants once, as we were both walking on the property), gorgeous, and simply cozy. We WILL be back!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My wife and I spent two nights in one of the cottages. The place was amazing. The cottages were just as described. Janie and Peter were very helpful and met us for the last mile drive up the mountain side to the cabin. It was foggy the afternoon we got there, but Janie promised the Pacific was just outside the windows. Next morning, sunny and beautiful and she was right - there was an amazing view of the Pacific. We enjoyed the fresh eggs and picking some lemons and apples from the orchard, walking the road through the forest and also driving down Hwy 1 to near by Big Sur. We highly recommend the cottages.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

This was the most relaxing enjoyable vacation my husband I and have had in years. The cottage was just what we needed from the well appointed kitchen to claw foot bathtub with a great view and a deck also with a great view. Lots of trails to hike, vegetables and fruits to pick, depending upon what's is in season. And then there are the chickens. We are already making plans to return.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

I couldn't say enough wonderful things about our stay at Country flat farm. We chose this destination as our honeymoon. We were greeted with champagne, fresh fruit from the farm and fresh flowers. The peace and quiet, outstanding views and hospitality were beyond expectation. We were sad to leave, but look forward to another stay. Big Sur was a dream vacation and the cottages at country Flat Farms were perfect for our getaway. Thanks again to the owners.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This is a wonderful place to stay. East of Eden cottage is charming, clean, comfortable and thoughtfully designed. The farm is lovely, with lemon and other fruit trees, chickens and veggies. Views, morning and sunsets are long and beautiful. The hosts are warm and helpful. I would recommend this to anyone for whom driving a long, steep, bumpy and bending dirt road is not a significant drawback. We were un-nerved by the road but came to feel that the exciting trip was worth the very great pleasures of being at the farm.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.
