THINGS TO DO AND CONVENIENCES AROUND YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Old Montreal and its harbour district are the centre of many cultural and historical attractions with a variety of entertainment activities for all year round enjoyment. From the international fireworks competition in the summer to night skating in the winter, watch 3-D projections on screens 10 times the normal cinema screen size at the IMAX theatre, listen to live music at an outdoor's concert and if your are lucky, the Montreal born Cirque du Soleil (www.cirquedusoleil.com) will be at home, setting up camp on the Port's grounds. You can find all this information and more, as well as a schedule of events at www.oldportofmontreal.com.

#Culture, history and heritage as your neighboor
For a list of museums and historical sites in the Old Montreal center best to consult the web site www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca to customize your walking tour as per your personal interests. As for the whereabouts of art galleries you can find a complete guide at www.option-art.ca

#Pampering is just a breath away
*Take an afternoon off your feet at the award winning aqua spa ~Scandinave Les Bains Vieux Montréal~ (71 de la Commune W.), inspired by the age-old tradition of public bath. Indulge in the eucalyptus steam bath.(514) 288-2009 www.scandinave.com.
*Try the popular nordic boat spa ~BotaBota~, exactly, a boat, docked just down the street. Located at the corner of McGill and de la Commune (514) 284-0333 toll free: 1-855-284-0333 www.botabota.ca. Open all year round.
*Take back a Montreal style coif at the ~McGill Spa Salon~ (414, McGill (514) 397-0009). I have been a loyal costumer for 10 years and was never disappointed.

#Shopping frenzy
The Old Montreal center has plenty of exclusive local designers, jewelry and clothing shops. You can find most strolling along St. Paul and Notre-Dame. But there are plenty more hidden on the cobblestone side streets.

#Favourite cafés, bistros and quick luncheons spots near by
*At your doorstep you will have plenty of options for a quick bite or coffee. A luncheon hot spot ~Soup Soup~ that have great daily specials. A ~Van Houtte~ coffee shop sits at the corner of Wellington and McGill were you can grab a quick muffin or lunch. Just beside, on McGill, you have ~Le Cartet~. It serves hardy breakfasts, business luncheons and have ready made take outs. On the square, you can grab or take out a thin crust pizza at ~Pizzaiolle~ or asian food at ~Azaitik~. Just around the corner, relax and enjoy trendy food and an in-house brew at ~Pub des Soeurs Grises~ (32 McGill).
*My all time favourite for lunch is the restaurant ~L'Arrivage~ perched at the top of the Montreal Museum of Archeology and History with a splendid view of the Port area. Decently priced with daily lunch specials. I highly recommend their Sunday brunch. (514) 872-9128.
These are just a few spots to get you started, there are many more around.

#Some dining recommendations
The old city is famous for their fine cuisine.Remember that in Quebec, there is an added 15% tax to your bill plus the customary 15% tip so think about it while looking at the menu. In the neighbourhood, the restaurant ~Racines~ is highly praised by critics. Located on McGill at the corner of St. Maurice it serves lunch and diner ((514) 544-0444 www.racines.ca closed Sunday/Monday).
*Located in the next door trendy neighbourhood of Griffintown, thou not so much of a walking distance, ~Backstrap BBQ~ (4436 Wellington - (514) 507-6772 www.backstrap.ca) for a Southern style taste. If you just want to nibble some appetizers while sipping vino, the highly appraised ~Vin Papillon' (2519 Notre Dame W.) might do the trick. www.vinpapillon.com, no reservations, open 15h00-24h00 daily, closed Sunday/Monday).

#Winding down and night life hot spots
*For some night time entertainment, Old Montreal offers plenty. Enjoy listening to live music while sipping an exotic cocktail mix in the cozy cove of the ~Piano Rouge~ lounge (22 St. Paul E. (514)439-3842 www.lepianorougelounge.com for a calendar of shows).
*A popular address with locals alike is ~L'Assommoir~ (211 Notre-Dame W.) for their famous selections of cocktails, food, live music, dancing and cabaret. (514) 272-0777 www.assommoir.com for a calendar of events.
*If you are not familiar with Montreal's so called 5 à 7's (pronounced in French, cinq à sept) similar to happy hour, give it a try. A nearby hot spot is ~Le Local~ (740 William (514) 397-7737) and a little further ~Suite 701~ (710 Côte de la Place d'Armes - (514) 904-1201) where you can enjoy a pitcher of sangria with a side order of mini kobe beef burgers. The best are Thursdays for this trendy outing.
*If the warm weather has arrived, a favourite place is the roof top terrace of the ~Auberge du Vieux Port~ (97 de la Commune - (514) 876-0081) which provides a bird's eye view on the Old Port. ~Hotel Nelligan~ (106 St. Paul - (514) 788-2040) holds as well a secluded roof top terrace with a view on some historical sites and some fine dining to add.
