Kiahuna Plantation is a low density beach front Condo Resort, the only one on sunny Poipu Beach. Call owner for best price, as little as $46.67 per person/per nite, based on maximum occupancy. Internet connection is FREE for our guests.
New Legislation. Starting July 1, 2012, a new law HB 2078 regarding rental properties has been in effect. This law requires out of-state owners, like us, to post our local agent, Roy Thompson, 808-742-2200, and our Hawaiian Transient Accommodations Registration No. W40955782-01.
Volker & Regina Bauerle, the owners of the 2-BR, 2-BA Condo, will handle all the booking via e-mail vbauerle@rugart.com, or by phone 562-691-3643. A superior Management Company with an office at the Kiahuna Plantation will manage our unit.
Nestled within 35 acres of lush lawns and tropical gardens are plantation style buildings, no higher than a palm tree. Our unit is open and airy due to large sliding doors and windows with louvers that open to catch the cooling Hawaiian tradewinds.
The master bedroom on the first floor features a King Bed, 2 night stands, a separate dressing room and full bath with tub. The master bath has been renovated in October 2012. A dresser - with a TV on top - and 2 large closets are provided for your clothes including a safe for valuables. A 6' sliding door leads to your private lanai with 2 lounges and a chair & table where you can relax with a good book and listen to the birds sing.
In August 2012, new Island Shutters have been installed in the master bedroom for your privacy.
Our 2nd bedroom has 2 twin beds, a night stand, a large dresser and a closet. The guest bathroom, which has been totally renovated in August 2012, is off the hall featuring a large enclosed shower, with a sink inside a cabinet with a granite top.
On the 2nd. floor, the living/dining room (great room) is spacious (20' x 24'). The full-service kitchen was recently updated with new cabinets, a stove, microwave dishwasher and refrigerator. Even a small oven is provided for warming up bread, or making toast. An electric coffee machine, mixer to make your tropical drinks & smoothies, and all the dishes, pots and utensils you need are provided.
Next to the kitchen is the dining area with a glass top table and 6 chairs. 2 people can sleep on the pull-out coach in the living room, which has been re-upholstered -- together with 2 wicker chairs - in 2012. The new 42' LCD TV sits on top of a dresser with FREE cable provided, including FREE Internet service for your computer.
The drapes in the great room have been replaced in August 2012 with off-white Island Shutters.
Your private balcony is right outside the living room, where you can - if you like - eat most of your meals, like we do, to save money. We usually shop at Costco in Lihue. They have a large variety of fish, sushi & sashimi, appetizers, and ready-made meals, including wines & spirits available. The Lihue Costco features more products than our local Costco in California. There is ample room for 6 people to eat, using the round table & chairs on the balcony. In addition, you can also relax on a lounging chair and sip your favorite drink while watching the colorful birds in the huge, 100 year old monkey pod tree facing the balcony. We especially like the red-crested cardinals. They'll eat right out of your hands.
In April 2013, the 8'x8' entry and kitchen tile has been replaced with 16'x16' tiles, installed in a diamond pattern.
A new barbeque below our property will help you get quick, cost-efficient meals on your table. Even a hamburger or hot dog tastes better from the BBQ at the Kiahuna Plantation than at home.
However, if you prefer eating out and you don't want to drive, here are some of your choices: The Plantation Gardens Restaurant is right around the corner from our building. Across the street at the Kiahuna Shopping Center are 4 places to eat. There is upscale Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill. Medium priced Keoki's Paradise with open air dining is a favorite. If you're a hamburger fan, go to Tropical Burgers at the NE corner of the shopping center. Or eat a Puka Dog (next door to the Tropical Burgers restaurant) with a choice of unusual toppings.
One of the newest additions for fine dining is a mile west of our complex at the Kukui'ula Village in Koloa. Merriman's is good, but pricy. Our favorite for special occasions is Josselin's Bar & Grill, right across from Merriman's. Jean Marie Josselin used to be the owner/chef of A Pacific Cafe in Kapaa, possibly the best restaurant in Hawaii. Unfortunately it closed a few years ago. We were pleasantly surprised when our favorite chef opened his new restaurant in 2010. You got to try the Lychee Sangria. It is out of this world, made with white wine (not red like your typical sangria) plus secret ingredients. One of the staff members gave us the recipe for this killer drink. We now serve it at our home to special guests. Everybody raves about it.
Around the Kiahuna Plantation property you find a multitude of beautiful blossoms and colorful foliage. Take in the aromas of sweet plumerias, orchids and hibiscus. Watch the palms gracefully swaying in the breeze, and find flowers, trees and shrubs you may have never seen before. The Moir Cactus Garden is another spectacular attraction on the resort grounds, created almost 80 years ago. You'll discover that this Condo Resort is so much more relaxing than similar places on Oahu and Mauai with their hustle and bustle.
The Tennis Club with a full-service Pro Shop is only a 4-5 minute walk. Tennis is free for Kiahuna guests. After your match cool off at the adjacent Kiahuna Swim Club. It also features a waterslide, waterfall, whirlpool spa and a children's play area.
Serene and uncrowded, a short walk from our condo will lead you to the best swimming beach on Kauai. Feel the warm white sand sift through your toes as the Hawaiian sun embraces you. Gaze at the brilliant blue waters of Poipu Beach and watch as the sunrays dance on the waves. You can go surfing, boogie-boarding, snorkeling, sunbathing, or reading a good book under a palm tree in the vast lawn facing the ocean. Free towels and beach chairs are provided at the Beach Hut for our guests. Surf-and boogie boards are available for rental. Surf lessons are also available.
The famous Poipu Bay Golf Course, former site of the annual Grand Slam tournament, is 2 miles east, next to the Hyatt Poipu Hotel. The Kiahuna Golf Course is just north of our property. Other great golf courses are nearby. As one of our guests we'll reveal the name and location of a little-known golf course where you can play for less than $30. If you're interested, just ask us.
Many other fun things, like horseback riding, scuba diving, windsurfing, etc. are available all year around. If you like hiking, we can help you find the perfect trails. You can reach the Waimea Canyon in about an hour by car. Mark Twain called it 'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.'
As you can see, there is simply no shortage of things to do, including helicopter rides around this amazing island. Make your plans today and we'll help you have the greatest vacation of your lifetime.

Volker & Gina, Thank you so much for allowing us to spend ten wonderful days at your Kiahuna Plantation condo. We also appreciated walking in a gift basket full of delicious fruit and chocolates, very thoughtful. The condo was exactly what we expected plus some - clean, spacious and perfectly situated between the beach and pool and close walking distance to the popular Poipu Beach. Volker & Gina were great at answering any questions leading up to the trip and provided an extensive list of things to do/places to eat etc. which was helpful for first time Kauai visitors. We had a great trip and the weather cooperated on most days. Maui was our preferred Hawaii destination but after this trip we have all decided otherwise… no doubt we will be back. Thank you again for allowing us to stay at your condo, we will surely recommend your place to friends and family interested in vacationing in Kauai.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We just spent 4 weeks at this condo. The photo's are an accurate presentation of the home. We found it to be roomy and comfortable. I thought about rating it as good because of construction noise in another unit that was being totally remodeled at the time of our stay. However, that was not the owner's fault and I think it was near completion when we left. The owners were fabulous to work with and I felt we became friends via email. They sent us a fabulous gift basket. We could not believe all of the goodies that were in it. It was HUGE. The basket came home with me. This condo at Kiahuna Plantation is the PERFECT place for a short or long term vacation. The beach is a wonderful place to read, swim, snorkel, surf, stand up paddle, whale watch, turtle watch, SUNSET watch, etc. Everyone heads to the beach to watch the sunset. If you are lucky you will get to see a "green flash". You can run, walk or hike in many different directions with many picture taking opportunities. If you scuba dive there is a great spot from shore 3 minutes down the road. Poipu Shopping Village is directly across the street with several restaurants, shops and a Starbucks. Koloa Town with two grocery stores is 2 miles away. Kukuiula Shopping Center, also with restaurants is 1/4 mile away with a great Sunshine (Farmer's) Market every Wednesday afternoon at 4 pm. There is a Costco in Lihue. Don't miss the Laysan Albatross, Red Footed Boobies and Tropic Birds at Kilauea Lighthouse, Waimea Canyon and a catamaran ride on the Na Pali coast from either the south shore or the north shore. Pick up the book Kauai Revealed for "everything" you need to know and where to go.Owner response: On March 12, 2012 Lynda E. inquired about renting our condo for 4 weeks in February/March 2013. I got excited because this was the 2nd. request for a 4-week stay at our 2-BR, 2-BA condo within 30 days. I already booked a family from Utah from January 14 - February 11, 2013. Now we might have another party from February 12 - March 12, 2013. But then I noticed that there were only 2 people. I felt it wasn't fair to mention that the Kiahuna Plantation (KP) also rents 1-BR, 1-BA units. After I e-mailed they could save money by choosing a 1-BR unit, I figured that would be the end of the story. Wrong! On March 13 Lynda responded : "Yes there will be 2 of us. Your listing mentioned a discount and we would like the space. We are leaving KP today. Mahalo, Lynda" On March 14 I heard from Lynda again. They just arrived home after spending 9 weeks at KP. Since I never heard of anyone, except KP homeowners, to stay that long. I called Lynda to find out more about their vacation. We really had a great conversation. It was the beginning of a friendship. Lynda mentioned that her brother-in-law and sister-in-law want to join them, so a 2-BR, 2-BA condo would be great. Lynda, Allen, Kevin & Jo Anne were wonderful guests from February 12 - March 12, 2013. They treated our 2nd. home with respect and appreciated that Gina and I invested over $30,000 for renovation/replacements in 2012/13: 1. Renovated Guest Bathroom in August 2. Renovated Master Bathroom in October 3. Re-upholstered couch and 2 chairs in the Great Room 4. Replaced drapes with Aloha Shutters in the Great Room and Master Bedroom 5. Replaced refrigerator in kitchen 6. Replaced water heater 7. Replace tile in entry and kitchen (4/13) Gina and I do our best to make all our guests welcome so they want to return, like Suzanne C. who inquired yesterday if Thanksgiving was available. That would be the 3rd. rental in 2 years. The Nairne family from Canada are spending 2 weeks from 12/21/13 - 1/4/14 at our place. In 2011 we could only give them 1 week. That's why they booked 1 year in advance to make sure nobody would get ahead of them. They liked our condo even before the renovations, but are looking forward to the upgrades. It is about a 4-5 minute walk to Poipu Beach, and about the same distance to the Tennis Courts and swimming pool. The huge monkey-pod tree facing our balcony protects guests from noises and trade winds, making it possible to stay outside until late.

Hi Volker & Gina! Thank you both so much for allowing us to stay at your beautiful Poipu home. We had such a wonderful time. Even heeded your advice and grabbed some stuff from Costco. My brother-in-law loved the grills. As did I! Your home is beautiful. Did ziplining in Princeville and rode ATVs in Kipu. Drove up to Waimea Canyon. Amongst cruising the georgeous island and beaches. Thank you both again for sharing your home. These are memories that will last a lifetime! MAHALO! Amy, Karen, Lori and Ron.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The condo was walking distance to the beach. Furnishings, fixtures and appliances were a little dated. A welcome gift basket was a pleasant surprise. The Beach was average. I traveled 5 out of 7 days to other beaches around the island. I would stay there again if I travel again with a large extended family. The lack of windows makes it for a noisy environment a you can hear the neighbors Wooden floors don't help if you are staing on a lower level.Recommended for: Pet owners.
Owner response: It had to happen sooner or later. One of our guests was not satisfied with our condo, while ten others before him raved about it. This guest from NYC found the furniture & appliances in our 2nd. home a little dated. Even the beach, which Travel Channel rated as one of the best in Kauai, was below his expectations. For the record, Kiahuna Plantation (KP) is the only Condo Resort at Poipu that has a beach. That's what sold us in 1985. The Kiahuna Plantation Resort has been built like an old Plantation with shutters on the windows and a fan in each room so the condo is well ventilated. KP wasn't built like high-rise hotels in Honolulu, with noisy air-conditioning and freezing rooms with little privacy. Kiahuna Plantation represents the Old Hawaii...spacious units -- the buildings no higher than a palm tree -- on beautiful grounds, an abundance of flowering shrubs & trees, singing birds and a laid-back lifestyle. Four years ago we renovated our kitchen, replacing all cabinets, dish-washer, stove/oven & microwave. However, some of our renters booked by our Management Co. and even some of our guests we brought in were a little rough on the appliances & furnishings. Housekeeping had to use strong solvents to clean the stove & Microwave. Therefore, some of the numbers on the appliances are hard to read, but there is nothing wrong with the appliances. Regarding the furniture. We wanted to keep the Old Hawaiian look, which means modern furniture do not fit. However, we just bought new fabric for the couch and two rattan chairs in the living room to be re-upholstered. In addition, we signed a contract in May 2012 to renovate the 2 bathrooms. Also, the drapes on the large 12' x 8' sliding door in the living room and the 6' x 8' sliding door in the master bedroom will be replaced with off-white Plantation Shutters. If you want to spend your vacation, or a birthday, wedding, anniversary, etc. at a place that is like the Old Hawaii, our condo at the Kiahuna Plantation is right for you. Otherwise, a hotel may be the better choice. Your hosts, Volker & Gina Bauerle

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: My wife Gina and I love to travel to exotic destinations. We've visited Tahiti and neighboring islands 7 times, and the Fijian islands 3 times. We also took cruises in the South Pacific, Mexico, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Scandinavian countries including Russia. We've been in Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, but avoided Kauai because we heard it is the wettest spot on earth. However, once we found out that the Poipu Beach area only gets about 35 inches a year, we booked a trip. When we discovered Kiahuna Plantation, we knew that this 'Special Place' was our own personal Paradise. We've been operating our own Carpet & Interior Store since 1963. At times it was so hectic, the only thing to keep us from going out of our mind was our condo in Kauai. A couple of weeks at this healing island (people call it the Garden Island and Healing Island) helped recharge our batteries. In 1987 we got tired of selling the same old regular carpets. That's when we developed a system to create one-of-a-kind carpets matching each client's decor. Home-and business owners loved it. In 1991 we opened a hands-on workshop to teach our secret craft to entrepreneurs from the US, Canada, Singapore, the UK & Ireland, Saudi Arabia... Over 600 individuals were trained and they now operate their own business offering custom carpets in their areas. Most of our annual conventions were conducted at the Kiahuna Plantation. Our Affiliates just loved this wonderful place, almost as much as us. Daily we enjoy our 4-5 minute walk to Poipu Beach. We find a shady spot under a palm tree in the lush lawn facing the ocean and read a book. Besides playing tennis or reading a good book, swimming & snorkeling are one of our favorite things to do. We also enjoy longer hikes up in the mountains, or along the beach. Grilling local fresh fish or meat on the BBQ below our property is more satisfying to us than spending a lot of money at restaurants.
Why the Owner Chose Kiahuna Plantation:
Our first visit to Kiahuna Plantation was in August 1980. A friend raved about this 'Special Place' (translation of 'Kiahuna') because of its beautifully landscaped property and the spectacular Tennis Club. That's exactly what we were looking for.
You see, my wife Gina's brother, sister-in-law and their son visited us from Germany, And since their son Wolfi Leitner, was the Bavarian Junior Tennis Champion (later to be selected to the German Junior Davis Cup with Boris Becker, Michael Stich...), we wanted to treat our guests to the finest.
On first sight we fell in love with this low-key condo complex. Everybody enjoyed this special vacation...and the accommodations, the tennis, beach and the tranquility of the island made it especially memorable.
My wife and I returned 3 years later. That's when we found out that the condos were individually owned.
In January 1985 we bought unit #223 and never regretted it. Ron, our oldest son, celebrated his 30 th. and 40th. birthday, together with his family. Our oldest granddaughter Cassidy, who was 2 years old when visiting for the 1st. time, spent her honeymoon with husband Ben at Kiahuna. Brothers Chase & Clay, surfed many times on Poipu Beach. Our son Ray with wife and twin girls Rachel & Robin from Houston, TX were here as well. Robert, our youngest, knows Kiahuna inside and out.
Sepp & Christa from Munich enjoyed two additional vacations with us. My sisters Dagmar & Sigrid from Stuttgart, Germany visited us while I celebrated my 50th. birthday. Marty, my brother and family love to join us in Kauai as often as possible. Many friends from California vacationed with us here and had a wonderful time.
Gina and I usually visit Kiahuna twice a year, in May and October. We've been asked: 'Don't you get tired of this place?' Our answer is 'No, we still discover new places to hang out, new hikes, waterfalls, etc.' Kiahuna Plantation is our home away from home and we can hardly wait to visit again.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
It's a short walk to Poipu Beach and to the Tennis & Swim Club because our condo is right in the middle of the property. 5 restaurants including upscale Roy's can be reached by foot within 5 minutes. A Whaler's store is across the street for buying groceries, including a large selection of wines & spirits, T-shirts, sweaters, postcards, calenders & gifts. Starbucks is across the street as well, to take care of your caffeine cravings.
Less than a mile is the new Kukui'ula Center with little shops and several restaurants. The choices range from hamburgers & hot dogs at Bubba's, to quality Mexican food, to organic, to upscale at Merryman's, to our favorite -- Josselin's Bar & Grill, specializing in 'Tapas' and 'Lychee Sangria.' You can also find a seafood restaurant that opened in October 2012...
Old Town Koloa is a couple of miles away with its quaint shops, markets and restaurants.
Less than a mile from our condo you can learn how to scuba dive and get licensed.
