West Tisbury house description
Live life in the heart of the Vineyard—slow down and enjoy an Island retreat. Stroll to Alley's General Store for a morning coffee and danish. Picnic at nearby Lambert's Cove. Pedal your bike across the road to access the Island's extensive bike trails and browse at a fantastic art gallery. Shop at the local farmers' market and crafts fair, then load up the car with some beach toys and head to the ocean. Buy fish at Menemsha and watch the sunset at Gay Head. Then head home to play a little croquet on on the back lawn, frisbee with the dog, or maybe just kick back and enjoy the evening counting the fireflies, or staking a claim to your own favorite star. Another day starts tomorrow!
This centrally located Island house was once an old haybarn and retains all of its country charm. You can nestle in with numerous books and boardgames for those seldom seen rainy days. It sleeps 7, with upstairs and downstairs masterbedrooms, two additional bedrooms, three full baths and an outdoor shower. This is a family-friendly, dog-friendly house. The masterbedroom on the first floor has a full bath and attached study as well as a private garden—a perfect quiet spot for grandparents, or those not comfortable with steps.

- The back side of our house is where we spend most of our time when we aren't out and about at the beach or in town. It is a great place to hang out. Near the house we serve cocktails, grill, and relax. The lawn rolls away from the house toward our private meadows. Here we play croquet, wiffleball, soccer, and frsibee. The view is classic Up-Island. Vistas of rolling meadows and forest. ...moreless

Rustic and peaceful
Rustic and peaceful
As noted elsewhere, this is a beloved old Vineyard house with some history. There are many walking trails, lovely farms, and a couple of great restaurants nearby. The location is perfect, peaceful, close enough to everything we needed, yet allows an authentic up-island experience. The house is rustic and basic, but comfortable, with a huge private backyard. My sister and I rented it as a last-minute golf-widows' getaway, but it could easily have accommodated more family members and friends. There is a sprawling living room with a few antique pieces and a beautiful old brick fireplace flanked by bookcases loaded with games and books. If you are looking for lots of amenities, this is not for you. But if you want historic Vineyard charm, with day-lit-flooded rooms, and a quiet evening cocktail spot with pretty sunsets, it's just right.

Classic cottage with lots of space
Classic cottage with lots of space
Our family of five (plus dog) recently spent a week in mid-August at this wonderful classic Vineyard cottage. The house itself was large with more than enough room for our three kids to spread out upstairs while my wife and I took the master bedroom downstairs. Full of antiques and books, it has a very cozy, warm feel to it . The rooms have fantastic natural light that filters in through the trees around the house and the old windowpanes upstairs are very quaint and make the rooms inviting. One of the best things about the house was the fact that it sat on the top of a small hill with a very large back yard and lots of trees so even during the crazy high season of August you were very much secluded and could relax behind the house, cooking out, throwing the frisbee or looking at the stars at night. We went to nearby Lambert’s Cove before 10 a.m. every morning with our dog, who was in heaven. The outdoor shower was excellent. The property is located a few minutes from the bike path that circles the middle of the island, so we took advantage of that every day. The owner of the house was very helpful in setting up the rental and provided information on the island which helped a lot since this was our first visit. As the owner points out in his literature and lease, this is not an upscale rental with central air, matching dinnerware and high-end amenities. It is a classic Vineyard beach cottage that has been given love and care, but time and weather have also given their inevitable contribution. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this classic property in West Tisbury and found the house, the location and the owner all wonderful.

Why West Tisbury:
We love West Tisbury. It is an Island location with a rural, agricultural feel. We are close to Vineyard Haven and just a short drive to Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. We can easily get to some fantastic Island restaurants or prepare meals on the back lawn.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is walking distance to the farmer's market, Alley's General Store with direct access to all the wonderful bike trails on the Island. It is close to Lambert's Cove and Manemsha. Yet, it is not in the midst of the Island's mid-summer bustle. It has a remote secluded feel. The back lawn is private, beautiful, and affords sweeping Up-Island views.
