First-- I have to make this clear: when I say "4-star hotels," I'm talking REAL hotel class ratings... not reviewer opinion ratings. To put it into perspective, Rockydale equaled the **Presidential Suite** at the 4-star Hotel Marlowe (Cambridge, MA; easily one of the best experiences we've ever had) and was far (FAR!!) superior to the accommodations at the 4-star Le Meridien in Philly. I rated it 5 stars here as an experience rating... not hotel class. When we arrived, the house was IMMACULATE. I mean SPOTLESSLY clean. Every detail in the home is incredibly well thought out... great design and beautiful furnishings. Just a gorgeous place. All new (looking) utensils and glass/tableware. My only warning is to be wary of snow and severe temperatures, if they're in the forecast. The radiant heating wasn't quite up to the task one morning, when it was in the low teens overnight. The thermostat was reading 66° when we got up. It was pretty chilly, especially in the bedrooms, but we grabbed some blankets and lit the ventless gas logs. BTW, we didn't notice the house temp during the night AT ALL-- the beds were unbelievably comfortable and cozy. We all slept like rocks. (Seriously, the master bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in). The other warning is accessibility to the house during snow. I have a front-wheel drive SUV with chunky tires and with several nights of only maybe 3" total accumulation (powdery, not icy, thankfully), I was still able to make it in and out of the property. We never got stuck, but it did make for some "adventurous" excursions. Charlie was super gracious, offering to come pick us up in his 4WD, if we were to get stuck, but thankfully we didn't. During our snowy weekend, lower elevations weren't a problem at all... just the higher roads, and especially if there is ANY ice or highly compacted snow and it's <20° outside. Everyone up there has 4WD for a reason. ;) Despite that, we still had a great time. We wouldn't hesitate returning (during better weather). We had really hoped to hike the property, but at least we were able to get some skiing in!! Thanks again, Charlie and Joy! You really know how to do rental property right!

We loved Rockydale Cabin and immediately felt comfortable and at-home. We will make this an annual trip for our family! The home is simply gorgeous in every way...no details were spared. It exceeded our expectations in every way! The pictures simply cannot do the cabin and grounds justice! The view is spectacular and the hill out front is perfect for sledding! The cabin in on acres of land only accompanied by the owners cabin, so it is perfect for a private get-away. No worries of traffic or noise outside your door. We were so happy and content to stay on the grounds and play in the snow all day (with the sleds provided by the owners) and warm by the fire place at night. We cooked almost every meal at the cabin because the kitchen was so nicely appointed and had everything we needed. If you do need supplies, there is a large, very clean WalMart Super Store within a 10-12 minute drive...we bought all ski bibs and boots there and they had a great selection! Our stay at Rockydale was simply perfect and the owners were wonderful!!

This house is gorgeous. The location is good too - a little ways away from the hussle and bussle, but it was no issue getting to either Blowing Rock or Boone in just minutes. The house is very well equipped with a great kitchen, and they have a nice grill on the deck too. The bed rooms are gorgeous and the bathrooms are so nice. We even got to do a little hiking on the property and got some amazing pictures. It certainly was a treat!

Our stay was wonderful! The house was beautiful and was tastefully decorated with beautiful antiques and persian rugs. The house was very inviting and cozy. Furnished with all the extras you need. The view of the mountains from the deck was great! The owners, Charlie and Joy, were very nice. The location was great, it felt like you were miles away from everyone yet you are only minutes from Boone and Blowing Rock. You will not be disappointed if you rent this.

We enjoyed everything about our stay. The home was very clean and beautifully decorated. Charlie and Joy were perfect hosts. They answered all of our questions and gave us great tips about places to visit and eat. We especially enjoyed Bass Lake and Storie Street Grille. Sitting on the deck watching the deer play was a treat for us. We will definitely return.

My two weeks at Rockydale were simply wonderful. It was one of the best vacations I've ever had. The furnishings are exquisite yet comfortable. The hosts did everything possible to make me feel welcome. Harvest baskets from the garden, fresh flowers, tips on how to reach nearby hiking trails . . . who could ask for more? The house is perfectly situated between Blowing Rock and Boone but far up, up, and away from any highway noise. If you like fresh air, spectacular sunsets, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of a fawn Rockydale is for you.

THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST RELAXING WEEKS WE HAVE EXPERIENCED IN A LONG TIME. THE COTTAGE DECOR WAS WELL THOUGHT OUT, CLEAN AND APPEALING TO THE SENSES AND FUNCTIONALITY. THE SMALLEST OF AMENITY DETAILS WERE TAKEN CARE OF FROM KITCHEN TO BATHROOM. THE ANSWER TO QUESTIONS WHICH STARTED "I WONDER IF THEY..." WERE ALMOST UNIVERSALLY ANSWERED "YES". CHARLIE AND JOY WERE HELPFUL AND ACCOMODATING, BUT UNINTRUSIVE AS TO OUR TIME AND SPACE. BLOWING ROCK IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL QUAINT VILLAGE WITH FUN EXTRAS LIKE A FARMER'S MARKET ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND ART IN THE PARK EXHIBITORS ON SATURDAY THE WEEK WE WERE THERE. BOONE HAS A COLLEGE TOWN FEEL THAT IS ALSO ATTRACTIVE. THE MOST DESCRIPTIVE WORDS THAT SUM UP THE EXPERIENCE ARE "PEACEFUL, QUIET AND REJUVENATING." WE WILL DEFINITELY RETURN TO THIS HAVEN AND RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.

This is a real gem of a place to stay, in a wonderful mountain setting. The cottage offered luxury and relaxation, a perfect home base for the week – a comfortable king bed, beautiful tiled shower with a seat, great bed linens, really good kitchen cookware and knives, ample reading and task lighting, a covered deck area…and as a bonus, the water at the cottage is better than just about any bottled water. It is beautifully decorated with antiques and architectural details. The cottage was immaculate, and everything functioned properly. Charlie and Joy welcomed us personally and made sure we knew how everything worked ( like lighting the barbecue). BTW, the photos of the front of the cottage show the driveway, not the main road; when on the property one never hears road noise. Rockydale has a lovely view and is very tranquil, yet it is only minutes from Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This area holds the highest mountains east of the Rockies, has numerous waterfalls and river gorges, and great hiking and 4WD roads on National Park and National Forest land. The National Geo Map #779 of Linville Gorge/ Mt Mitchell/ Pisgah National Forest was a big help in planning which back roads and trails to explore. (Amazon offers it for about $7.00). Charlie made some wonderful suggestions to help us find scenic 4WD gravel roads (traveling in deep forests alongside creeks with numerous waterfalls). The flip side of the Rockydale experience is the culture, shopping and restaurants in nearby Boone and Blowing Rock. The deck offers great sunset views. We enjoyed the covered deck well after dark - one night we listened to the rain on the roof, another night, a pair of owls calling to each other. The night skies are dark; stars and planets not seen near big cities are visible here. Morning brings lots of bird songs, at least in May. We heard wonderful warblers and vireos, and an elusive woodpecker. Several times we watched deer and wild turkeys browse in the meadow off the deck. At Charlie’s suggestion, we went to the top of the mountain above the cottage (a short walk or 4WD). It is very special to have access to mountain wilderness within a few minutes’ walk. Charlie and Joy added so much to our experience - always willing to offer suggestions, but never intrusive. They truly care that their guests have a relaxing and wonderful vacation. Charlie and Joy, thank you for a wonderful week at Rockydale. It is a very special place

The cottage and view are even more beautiful than the pictures reflect. Very clean and extremely well-maintained. Charlie kindly showed us around the cottage and explained all of the 'need to knows,' and was available to us if we had any questions. A VERY short drive to Appalachian ski slopes - a major plus! A wonderfully peaceful way to bring in the new year. Highly recommend!
