Crabtree Falls cabin description
Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions. Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted a little further down on this page. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks!
High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway.
***FOUR-WHEEL/ ALL WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED***
This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right at the end of our drive, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. Cornhole and horseshoes are provided, as well as a hammock and even a guitar for fire pit sing-a-longs......(musical talent not provided....but inspiration is guaranteed) In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating.
The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. Once again, it's small, but cozy, so you'd better like the person/people you're staying with...or at least plan on liking them by the time you leave ; ) ..... There's a porch with a great view, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. *Just added* --new deck for totally private sunbathing....or you could eat breakfast, lunch or dinner there too. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only..... we're thinking of adding an outdoor shower, but feel free to use the hose for now! In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games. Usually the kids like to be upstairs, but they're welcome to pitch a tent and sleep outside if they're brave!
Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind.

Fantanstic Mountain Getaway
Fantanstic Mountain Getaway
My wife and I had planned a trip back in March which had to be cancelled so we were very excited to finally be able to make it up to High Lonesome. What a great place! Sitting atop a mountain, the cabin has beautiful views and tons of privacy. The cabin is small, but perfect for 1-2 couples or a small family. All the modern conveniences make the stay comfortable and stress-free. Most of all, you can tell that the owners take pride in what they've built and have a true love for the surrounding area. During our stay, we hiked Crabtree Falls (just down the street) and visited Devil's Backbone and Wild Wolf breweries - the rest of the time we relaxed by the fire, listened to music on the cabin's surround sound system (a nice modern touch) and watched the snow storm cover the mountains outside. Two recommendations - first, make sure you bring a stocked cooler, prepared to cook your meals in the cabin. We spent a little too much time in the car making trips to restaurants or grocery stores - everything (at least what we found) was 20-40 minutes away so this added up. Second, use Robb's directions to the cabin - we used GPS and again spent more time in the car than we needed. Overall a special cabin in a great location. We hope to make HLC an annual destination and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Owner response: Glad you guys made it this time. You've described your experience very well, and we appreciate that as we're so biased it's good to hear other people's reactions and how they share their experience. Thanks for the tips for future guests, and especially thank you for the referrals.
Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at your cabin - we really enjoyed our stay! I had been looking forward to going for a couple months - everything was as it was shown in the pictures - very clean and well appointed. The owner provided all the information we needed well in advance of our trip, which made planning and preparation easy. We had great weather during our stay and were able to enjoy many outdoor venues. The solitude of the cabin was awesome, though we did venture out to experience a couple of nearby hiking venues (most notably Crabtree Falls and the Appalachian Trail) and Devil's Backbone Brewery for dinner. We enjoyed the fire pit and the coziness the cabin offered, played some cards, and lingered on the front porch to watch the stars. We were especially glad we could bring our black lab, Maggie, who is very much part of our family. I have already recommended your cabin to several friends! We had a great time and hope to return!

We rent a cabin in this area every fall, and hands down, this was our best experience yet. Once you reach the cabin, you feel like you are on top of the world and completely alone. The cabin was "rustic chic" if you will - a perfect combination of rustic charm and modern day needs. Highlights for us was watching our three year old dance to satellite-provided Bluegrass music on the front porch (the outside speakers were an awesome touch), games and books by the wood stove, and playing ball in the yard. The house is full of useful information, guidance and tips - and personally, I love all the "rules and requests" made by the owners - it makes a more enjoyable experience for all guests and respects the owner's property - everybody wins. Don't let the driveway scare you - as long as you have 4WD and some acceleration, you'll be fine. If I had to stretch for suggestions, some sort of gate in the loft would be helpful for keeping little ones safe at night, and perhaps some railing around the extended deck for the same reason. Other than that, the only thing I can say is call us if you ever want to sell!

We really enjoyed our stay at this little cabin. It had its own personality and felt lived in (not just a rental). It was the right size for my husband, son, daughter-in-law, and our lab. Very quiet and secluded (except for a few rifles we heard in the distance each day -- I guess it was hunting season). We are with Verizon but didn’t have any luck w/ cell phone reception, so having the in-cabin phone was great (for staying in touch & in case of emergency). I’d love to see the view when the leaves are down and/or before they come in. I personally think the best view is from the kitchen sink, which actually made washing dishes an enjoyable task. Robb and Sally were communicative and easy to work with. We definitely recommend HLC.

The cabin itself was immaculate. Everything was in great shape and very clean. The owners have clearly gone out of their way to stock it with anything you might want (fire pit w/ chairs, hammock, corn hole, horse shoes, nice kitchen appliances, tv w/ dvd). Beyond the amenities, the area is beautiful. Nice lawn some short trails and area to walk around, all quiet and "off the grid" which is just what we wanted, while still being close to lots of things to do. A unique piece which was great. Friends who were meeting us up there had their car break down on the drive way. We called one of the local guys who looked over the place and he was there in 10 minutes, towed them out of the problem, and even had us bring the car to his shop (he happened to be a mechanic) and fixed it real quick and sent us on our way. Wonderful people.

High Lonesome was everything we expected it to be, and more. Very steep driveway, yes, but my friend's Jeep was up to the task. Delightfully secluded, yes. Cozy, for sure. The kitchen had everything we could possibly have needed, including a set of sharp knives and a lot of spices. The a/c helped make for better sleeping on hot summer nights; the grill had a chimney to help get the charcoal started; the shower was hot and strong; and the adirondack chairs were perfect for stargazing. We enjoyed some of the more strenuous hikes around — Crabtree Falls, Spy Rock, part of the AT — but when Robb learned that one of our dogs was a bit too old for those hikes, he also told us about a flat rails-to-trails path not far away that runs along a river. It's only a minute's drive east of the Massie's Mill post office on Rt. 56, on your left — with parking next to the old rail station. We left the cabin as clean as we found it. Our only adventure was when some feral kitties ran off with one of our hiking socks — left overnight in a muddy hiking boot. But we recovered it under the deck. We recommend High Lonesome Cabin to anyone wanting to get away from it all a bit but not be too far from great hiking opportunities.

We enjoyed this cabin so much. It's just the right size and everything you need is there. We cooked, we stargazed, we read, we watched tv (sorry!) and played games. We also actually left the cabin for a couple of hikes. The best of which was Mt. Pleasant. Go google it and you will see how beautiful the views are and it's not a super challenging hike. We also enjoyed the 2 antique malls in Lexington (Duke's and "The Antique Mall") on the one rainy day. The driveway seems gulp-inducingly steep when you first arrive, but with the trusty 4WD in position and a steady acceleration, we had no trouble at all. By the end, we were singing John Denver songs and feeling right at home climbing up the "mountain mama". What you will love is how much thought the builders/owners put into making this place. It's cozy, comfortable and the seclusion and views are spectacular. We'd love to come again!

Most relaxing vacation ever!
Most relaxing vacation ever!
This is a wonderful, quiet and relaxing cabin in the woods. The cabin reflects just what was advertised, cozy and comfortable with a great front porch to watch the hummingbirds. The owner was very available to answer any questions. The cabin was clean and well maintained. Don't take it lightly, when the owner says you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, he is not kidding. The road up to the cabin is steep and the gravel is loose, but worth the trip. The surrounding area is beautiful and great for day trips to the Tye River and Crabtree Falls. I would recommend this cabin to all my friends and family.

Subaru sliced steep road, 4 wheel drive a must and this was well announced as a requirement. immediately struck by no need for air conditioning, fans sent breeze thru cabin easy. well appointed. Although I am going to treat any home with respect having to do a through cleaning at that price a little annoying. Vacum needs replaced. But, most definaty worth the trouble to be in such a private location so close to many attractions.

About the owner: We have been visiting the Virginia Blue Ridge mountains for over 30 years and have always dreamed of owning a place here. We have a deep love for nature, art and music, so we wanted something semi-rustic with a down to earth, 'blend in with the surroundings' feel. Also something that offered complete privacy.
Why the Owner Chose Crabtree Falls:
While we have enjoyed staying at many different types of beautiful places, from very luxurious 'cabin-style' homes with every possible amenity, to some of the cabin 'communities', (places where there isn't as much privacy as sometimes advertised) we immediately fell in love with the peaceful seclusion and tranquility that 'High Lonesome' offered. While sitting privately on 20 acres on the mountainside, it is surrounded by national forests and steep slopes of private land assuring that it will always remain secluded.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
It's location is also ideal. Far enough away from the more 'touristy' areas of the mountains yet close enough to get to them if you desire. The only possible issue for some will be the steepness of the gravel drive, but the new driveway is in and working out well. For us, a small price to pay for the seclusion and privacy that comes along with it. While every stay in this beautiful area is a fantastic one, what we offer at High Lonesome is location....and if you are seeking a truly private, peaceful getaway with post card views and more stars than you'll see at a planetarium....you will love it!
