Sayulita house description

Casa #5 is the private home of the importers, designers and developers of Villa Bali, T.R. Lawrence and Linda O'Leary.

Villa Bali is an ingeniously inspired small community of 6 home sites, each with a main house and smaller guest house, approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) south of Sayulita. Located a short walk inland from Pascuarito´s secluded unspoiled beach; Villa Bali’s jungle location makes this property a beautiful place inside pristine Sayulita nature. This private community has hand laid cobblestone roads and each home is truly unique and ageless: made of carved teak wood houses imported from the island of Java, Indonesia, with architectural items from Morocco, North Africa and Mexican red brick double walls and red tile roofs. Nestled comfortably into the landscape each house provides visual privacy in an abundantly verdant setting: this development has a unique blend with its natural surroundings just outside Sayulita.

The main house of Casa #5 has a cobblestone driveway which leads to a large outdoor semi covered patio where bird watchers will delight. A generous umbrella with comfortable table and chairs invite you to soak up the sounds. Open space is available for sun bathing or an early morning yoga practice. The intricate carvings on the wooden porch walls and our large double doors invite you to see the interior of this 100+ year old home. Our spacious living and dining area is well furnished with comfortable furniture, designer cushions, a large desk with Wi-Fi access, stereo system, ceiling fans and original art pieces.

The kitchen features colorful Mexican tile, a bar with 2 barstools for mixing up the margaritas, a full size stove and refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, all pots, pans, dishware everything that is needed for meals at home. An outdoor BBQ is available also, in case you want to grill up some jumbo shrimp or fresh caught fish.

The two bedrooms each have queen beds, lightweight down comforters, air conditioning and their own full size bathrooms. The master bathroom features the unique Balinese style of a step down open bathtub with large shower head, and carved antique Afghanistan cabinet with marble sink. The second bedroom / bath have a separate entrance from the outdoor porch, offering even more privacy, and large glass windows bring in the sunlight. There is also a hot water outdoor shower off the kitchen entrance, for rinsing off the sand or just enjoying an outdoor private shower.

We offer beach umbrellas, towels including beach towels, all linens, everything that you might need for your vacation. We have a property manager who will meet you in the town of Sayulita and show you out to Villa Bali and answer any questions that you might have.

A walk into the town of Sayulita (if you choose not to rent a car) takes about 20 minutes and is delightful foray under a jungle canopy. There are taxi’s readily available in the town, in case you wish to walk in for dinner, and then take a taxi ride back out.

A vacation at Villa Bali offers the best of all worlds. You can be secluded in our quiet jungle environment, and spend some time in Sayulita, Mexico with its wonderful charm.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: T.R. Lawrence and his wife, Linda O’Leary have always been adventurous. They met as young twenty-something’s on South Padre Island, Texas, and within six months were on their first trip to Marrakech, Morocco. Marrakech in the late 70’s was an experience that filled all of the senses. Exploring the souks on bicycles and discovering antique rugs and artifacts as well as the newest artisanal offerings, they imagined a retail store back in the States that could showcase these treasures. In 1981 they opened NOMADS on Sunset Blvd in Houston, Texas, and soon after were manufacturing a large, successful handbag line in Morocco which they exhibited in Dallas at the twice-yearly trade shows. Handbag manufacturing opened up other doors, and soon they were off to manufacturing household items like lamps, armoires, coffee tables, windows, as well as designing women’s accessories like hand-beaded belts. In 1988 they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe is well known for its large art market and was even more suited for the type of things that they were finding in Morocco. The next 10 years found them doing even more manufacturing, as well as designing and producing a Bath and Beauty Line called Nomads, and importing and bottling olive oil from Morocco, of the same name. A new world opened up for Linda and T.R. when they decided to travel to Bali, Indonesia. The rituals of the people there were intriguing such as incense infused temple offerings and fresh flowers literally everywhere, also the willingness of the people to help you.

                  Why the Owner Chose Sayulita:
It was about this time when TR, an avid surfer, discovered Sayulita, Mexico. The first time he could surf a wave in, wander into Don Pedro’s on the beach get a great margarita, and use his visa card, he knew he had found a special place. Serendipitously, on their next trip to Bali, Linda & T.R.’s creative talents and collaborative vision enabled them to see the potential in the beautiful century-old teak houses found in the jungles there. All the pieces of their next venture started falling together. These teak houses were often found in deserted parts of the jungles in outlying islands, and then would be dismantled, put on a boat to Bali, re-constructed, and then re-packed and shipped to Los Angeles. TR and Linda would then have them put on a train to El Paso, Texas, where they would then be dismantled and clear customs (again) then put on a truck and brought to Sayulita. The process was long, and daunting at times….but it continues to be well worth it. So, after 24 years of running a retail store it seemed like the time to change was now. TR and Linda closed their retail store, Nomads in January of 2005, and began the process of building 12 Bali homes in the jungle of Mexico. A different kind of adventure awaited them. They invite you to come and enjoy this unique property.
