History: The property's grand limestone exterior exemplifies old austin stone architecture. When the rubble filled dam broke on lake austin around 1900 the shores were lined with large chunks of limestone. Subsequently many of the houses on the eastern side of lake austin were constructed with limestone from the lake shores.
The home and its out-outbuildings were built in1906 by judge batts after whom 'batts hall' at the university of texas was named. He was a texas supreme court justice famous for creating the texas railroad commission. She was an artist and the first director of the university of texas art department. The building known as the 'studio' was built as a weekend retreat for the judge and his wife. Her paintings of flowers can still be seen on the original hand-hewn beams on the lower floor of the 'studio'.
Once a b&b the 'studio' quickly became a favored honey-moon retreat and was voted 'austin's most romantic retreat'. With many movies were being produced in the austin area and some of the guests stayed for extended periods for example, luke wilson while filming 'the wendell baker story', producer linda obst while filming 'hope floats', and peter berg while writing the screen play for 'friday night lights'. Most recently in 2012 ryan gosling stayed at the home for several months while filming a movie about the the austin music scene.

About the owner: We first stayed at the house as renters via Homeaway two and a half years ago. We loved the property so much that we purchased the home in December and are carrying on the rental legacy. We hope that you will enjoy the house's heartwarming soul as much as we have!
