Shady Pines is such a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of life. From the time we made our reservation to our departure the homeowners made an effort to ensure we had an amazing experience. The proximity to the beach is an easy walk to watch the amazing sunset and great eateries are extremely close as well. We will definitely be back!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

My boyfriend and I were at Shady Pines with another couple for our b-day weekend and we cannot ask for anything more. First of all, the place was immaculately clean (The bedsheets are all freshly washed and dishes are organized). The wood burning fireplace was another plus(It was very lovely especially at night). There are also tons of board games available that if you decide to just stay in during the night, you will have so many options to choose.Another nice thing about the cottage is its' location and proximity to attractions and amenities (Gasoline station, grocery store, downtown Douglas, Saugutuck, Mt. Baldhead). It is also close to the lakefront area that we were able to experience the beautiful Saugutuck sunset few times. The owners were very helpful giving us suggestions where to go for dinner etc (Thanks for recommending Everyday People Cafe in Downtown Douglas-it was delicious!) or to answer questions during our stay. Shady Pines is also dog-friendly. We brought our three dogs with us and they did had a great time as well especially hanging out the front porch and enjoying the nice scenery. We even got lucky to see deers early in the morning roaming around the property. (that is something you don't see in the big city!). Overall, Shady Pines exceeded our expectations. We would definitely go back here again. Thank you Shady Pines for a memorable B-day weekend!!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

We spent a very fun weekend at the cottage with our 4 kids. The three older ones loved their own room with comfy bunkbeds and a third equally comfy bed. The whole cottage was very user friendly and homey. We loved the large screened in porch! The location is great, with a short walk to the beach and brief drives to excellent restaurants and ice cream! The owner was extremely helpful, thorough, and available.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Good to hear that your family of six was comfortably accomodated and that you enjoyed the cottage and area amenities!

Why the Owner Chose Douglas:
While visiting the Douglas and Saugatuck area in the late summer of 2010, friends John, Judy and Greg were driving around checking out the area and specifically this fantastic neighborhood. We weren't really looking to tour any homes, but rather get a sense of the area. However, when we happened upon this cute cottage with the fantastic pine shutters, we were all immediately drawn it. The stars were in alignment and we toured the home the following day and were smitten. While much of the cottage retains it's original 1960's charm, tasteful updates have been made where needed and we welcome your suggestions to make Shady Pines Cottage an even more enjoyable and pleasant place to stay.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Simply put - location, location, location! Shady Pines Cottage is located only steps away from pristine Douglas Beach and a short bike ride or drive from world-class Oval Beach. Regardless of what we are doing, walking over to the beach to enjoy the sunset is a must. Also, waking up to the birds chirping or simply enjoying the tranquility of the woods, including deer and fox walking through the front yard, is a nice respite from city living. Being able to leave your car parked and bike or walk around is a great feeling.
