You always hold your breath a little when you drive up to a vacation rental for the first time. I must say we were amazed and totally charmed the minute we drove in and saw the beautiful farmhouse with the romantic willow tree and the water views on all sides. Definitely a home run! The house had plenty of space for our extended family and the beds and linens are the best we have experienced in a vacation rental. We loved having all the king bedrooms - no one felt like they had to compromise. The owners provided all paper products, soap and shampoo - which made shopping for the week very simple. And the house was immaculately clean ! Obviously the owners have taken great care to make their guests feel totally at home. We used the herb garden every day - made pesto with the abundant basil. The kids loved the pool and we pitched horseshoes and sat around the firepit in the evenings. Living in the city, you forget how bright the stars can be! We found the binder of local info very helpful. It had menus from local restaurants plus spots to buy seafood that we would have never found on our own. We highly recommend Merroir - the oyster tasting room in Topping - fresh oysters and fresh local cuisine in a very relaxed setting on the water. Our daytrip to Williamsburg was an easy drive - but the rest of the vacation we wanted to stay at the house and swim, rest in the hammock and sit on the porch - waiting for the beautiful sunsets over the water. Thank you for a making this great property available - we can't wait to come back next year.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We spent a week at this beautiful home with our grown children and their families in July 2012. We rented both the main house and the guest quarters for our stay. Both were immaculate and very nicely furnished. We loved crabbing and fishing from the dock. The children spent most of their time in the pool, our youngest grandson (2) learned to "cannonball" during our stay. I do wish there had been two hammocks overlooking the water, that was a favorite spot for everyone! We had many enjoyable evenings sitting around the fire pit. The house is located in a very quiet area, but we were within 1/2 hour of major stores. We took a day trip to Williamsburg, but our favorite spot was the town of Mathews. It was such a quaint town, don't miss Richardson's Cafe! It was very nice having paper products and beach towel supplied for our stay. We cooked most meals, and the kitchen had everything we needed, as well as a grill. In addition, there is an herb garden that the owner generously shared with us. We would recommend this rental to anyone, especially for a family vacation! Thanks Marsha and Mark for sharing with us!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.

My wife and I decided to vacation a little closer to home this year since we would be traveling for the first time with our two boys and infant baby girl. Previously we rented beach homes exclusively, so weren't quite sure what to expect. I have to say that this place exceeded our wildest expectations. The house was magnificent, with sweeping views of Mobjack Bay, Ospreys, and an occasional bunny out of each window. The rooms were ornate, tastefully decorated, and immaculately cleaned. The kitchen was very well equipped (my wife loved the coffee maker!) and the pool was crystal clear, well maintained, and refreshing on the 90+ degree days we were blessed with. Our mornings consisted of lazy breakfast on the rear porch overlooking the bay, which allowed easy planning of the days activities. Whether splashing the day away, or a day trip to Williamsburg, we found each day more relaxing and refreshing than the last. For a great opportunity to enjoy the beach as it was many years ago, before spoiled by development, I recommend the short drive to Haven Beach. For a more exciting time with the kids, Water Country USA is pure water-infused lunacy. The boys (8 and 5) and I had a wonderful time fishing from, but due to my complete ineptness, caught nothing more than great memories. :) We consider ourselves very particular when we rent, and were completely delighted with our experience. We will absolutely recommend this property to our family and friends, and will be back in the future. Thanks for sharing this beautiful property, and enabling our magnificent vacation. Fantastic in every aspect, would highly recommend to anyone.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We love sharing this peaceful retreat and are so glad the house exceeded your expectations! We have an email from part of your family - they made great use of the horseshoe pitching area near the river. Who knew that we would be hosting someone who pitches on the professional horseshoe pitching tour? We look forward to your return.

OMG,what a wonderful taste of paradise:) this was such a great get-a-way. We meet our aunt and uncle half way(they are from Pa,we are from NC)there were so many things to do there. The town of Mathews and Glouchester were very quaint. The people we encountered here are genuinely friendly, and always ready to offer suggestions:)We walked on the many beaches, all being very remote, metal detecting and roasting marshmallows on our Bon fire.We loved the stillness of the atmosphere, peepers peeping driving to the cottage, turkeys in the yard, walking on the dock at sunset, playing horseshoes, and just enjoying all the amenities the farm house had to offer....it is close to many of the bigger cities that we visited also. Thanks so much for lending your beautiful home to us:)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: We agree - Mathews is a hidden gem with miles and miles of remote coastline. Sounds like you have many great family memories to take home with you!

We really enjoyed ourselves at your house, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. We got to watch the bald eagle hunt almost every morning. It was so quiet and peaceful. We were amazed at how little boat traffic was on the river, that is what makes your place unique. Navigation on the river was not a problem, there are enough markers so you can stay in the channel. They do have an oyster reef that is marked about a mile down from the house, you need to stay to the right heading down the river. Fishing was fantastic! We caught lots of big speckled trout down in Mobjack Bay heading toward the East River. The dock is one of the best we have ever used and the boat ramp is very convenient. It was also nice catching crabs while sitting on the dock watching the sunset. Nice crabs!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/7

We had a great week at this wonderful house - the setting is so peaceful and private. The house has so much natural light and great views to the water. The owner made us feel so welcome - leaving information on local events, shopping and restaurants. The house had everything we needed; the beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed eating on the porch in the evenings watching the sunset. Several nights we sat down by the water and had a fire in the firepit and watched the stars. We watched a bald eagle who sat on a tree by the water in the mornings. We had never seen one so close up. The owner provided binoculars to watch the birds. The house was very clean and filled with thoughtful touches. The wifi worked great with our laptops - we enjoyed having this convenience at the house. Our day trip to Williamsburg was an easy drive back and forth. We are already planning our trip back for next year.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
