Walk to Beach from Architect's Mediterranean Villa, Own Pool

By a miracle this part of the coast has escaped urban development and still feels like 'la campagne'. The intense light and colour that drew Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and Van Gogh still cast a spell. A deep blue sky, warm sun and a landscaped garden full of mediterranean flora: palms, olives, lavender, rosemary, peach, orange, lemon, honeysuckle and jasmine surround the villa and private gated pool. A path without traffic leads in about 400m - a 10 to 15 minute walk - to a sandy cove where mica in the white sand looks like diamonds dancing in the water.
The small village of Canadel is on the sea side of the Corniche des Maures, a 26km coastal road stretching from Lavandou to La Croix-Valmer, with breathtaking sea views. On the land side rises the Massif des Maures. A road 5 minutes from the villa leads to the Col and the ridge path, superb for walking, cycling and picnics with vast blue vistas below.
We designed the villa to have as little division between house and garden as possible and to have privacy and space for different ages and activities, one of which must be reliable WiFi. Outside the bedroom wing is the cactus garden with swings, a tree house, badminton, table tennis and boules play areas. Two bedrooms have french doors opening onto a central terrace with a pepper tree, family dining table and chaise lounges facing the sea . . . still leaving space for yoga!
The living/dining room wing leads to a covered terrace with oak table, stone barbecue, summer kitchen and a gate to enclosed private pool (open mid-May to mid-October or by special request). Up the steps is our 'cocktail terrace' - a quiet hideaway with eagles nest view of the sea and islands.
All bedrooms are screened and have ceiling fans, bedside reading lights and wardrobes. Two beds are 160cms; one has adjustable backrest. Two bedrooms are ensuite, another has adjacent bathroom with tub with sea view: overlook the Mediterranean as you soak, with slate sill for chilled white wine. A fourth double bedroom (140 cm) looks onto our garden and has an adjacent shower room. A children's room has built-in bunks (80cm x 150 cm) and 2 single beds (80 cm x 190 cm).
The kitchen is state of the art, again with stunning sea views as it looks out to the Mediterranean.
This villa is our holiday home rather than a commercial rental property and therefore equipped with books, games, paintings, art materials, plants, CD's, DVD's, satellite TV, comfortable classic furniture, low voltage lighting on dimmers, telephone, fax, internet connection, alarm linked to central station and a caretaker couple from the next village who are available for mid-stay cleaning and babysitting on request.
Gentle steps lead up to the first floor which has all the living and terrace accommodation on one level without steps: a boon for the less mobile. The ground floor has a separate studio which can sleep up to 4, with independent kitchen, shower and WC. It is available at a small supplementary rent for over-spill.
We believe the villa has all the ingredients needed to make a memorable holiday and you will find it a fantastic place to be!

The villa is in a superb location - a walk to the nearest beach and an off road cycle track straight out the door down to the lovely beach at Cavaliere too. We spent our week mostly chilling at the beach interspersed with the occassional energetic cycle ride. The house is extremely well provisioned and comfortable to live in. It is clearly a cherished home and very well thought out throughout. We arrived to find it immaculate. Detailed instructions (e.g. for the security system) and local guides are provided in well-ordered folders. There is a very interesting garden and a play area with table tennis and badminton net, as well as the pool. They are a few options of lovely spots to eat outside or just sit and relax. We would definitely like to return!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you for reminding everyone how close and convenient the beaches and cycle rides are . It is the main reason we fell for the house: that it is on the sea side of the road and the dedicated cycle paths take one through such amazing views. . As you guessed we have put a lot of thought into what makes a memorable holiday for 3 generations and tried the experimental method over the last decade. We love being here and we hope you will return to enjoy this magic spot too. Best wishes.

Well-what a week! Both your restaurant suggestions were sensational. We had the 60th birthday lunch at the Tropicana Club in beautiful weather. The food was excellent and the service very friendly (and pretty). It lasted nearly 4 hours. Luckily we could walk home and collapse. A truly memorable occasion-particularly for the birthday boy.On our last night we had dinner at the Relais and it was marvellous. We dropped your name as you suggested and already friendly waiters became particularly attentive. The food was really excellent. These were 2 highlights in the best week we have ever had at La Lezardiere. Really lovely weather with gorgeous sunsets. September really is a nice time to be on the Cote d'Azur. The house and gardens are looking absolutely superb. We just did not want to leave! If you are renting it out next year we would love to take a week. Thank you again for letting us to stay at your beautiful house.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

"Eight adults and two toddlers spent a week here in the middle of September. We found the villa everything that it cracked itself up to be - wonderful position, beautiful views, well equipped. Our problem was that we spent too much time on the beach to take advantage of all the facilities - though we did play fierce games of table tennis. The pool was plenty big enough for us, sometimes they are very narrow, and there was room for most of us to laze around it - which was fine because there were always people and children in it. The eyrie at the top of the property was the most magnificent place to get away from everyone - particularly at bed time with a book and a bottle of wine - or just to look at the sea.he sea really was only 10/15 minutes walk away - though we tended to go with friends to the next beach west, where the sandwas yellower and there was more activity to watch. It was possible to push a buggy in the evening to the local pizza place, and even to the beach cafes - though we tended to eat at home, outside the kitchen by the barbecue or on the terrace with the view. Everything worked properly, there was masses of kitchen equipment with really large saucepans and frying pans, lots of plates, bowls and cutlery. The ice machine on the fridge was very popular. Once we got the magic codeword the internet worked more efficiently than home! The caretaker was very helpful when the family arrived and showed them exactly how everything worked. She arrived when she said she would to take the keys on our last day. She will babysit, but by the time we asked her she was already booked - not a problem as the French don't worry about children in the sort of places we went to en masse. All in all we had a wonderful, stress free week. Hopefully we will be able to do it again soon. Very many thanks to the Ashes for lending us their house.”Did you find this review helpful? We would like to say Thank You to you both for letting us share your beautiful house, La Lezardiere, last week. It was a wonderful place to catch up with our old friends. We have holidayed together in various parts of the world for 40 years whenever conferences or sabbaticals have put us in the same hemisphere! It was great to meet in such a spectacular place and get to meet their new granddaughter. You have the perfect house for family holidays, what fun you must have had over the years. It was so easy not to do anything but we did visit some wonderful hill top towns and markets. We certainly hope we can return one day with our family who would think they were in heaven!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Beautiful house, beautiful weather – we couldn’t be happier. Thanks, Clare, for thinking of every possible detail and the best equipped kitchen we’ve ever seen! We ate here most evenings on the terrace but our favourite lunching place is Tamaris Plage, just down the road in Pramousquier. Fabulous view and delicious food. Hate to leave and hope we can return next year!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thanks for letting us share your beautiful home. Absolute delight to invite our guests to this wonderful place, to spend a holiday together. Everyone had their preferred corner of paradise. My husband, who’d forgotten his knives (chefs never take a holiday without) couldn’t believe you had the same as him. My 6 year old lived in the pool pretty much the whole fortnight. Family from the UK sought the shady corners and played games under the trees, whilst our French family lay like lizards on the terrace whilst the 4 year old had to sit just above the painted sign on the tree house just to prove a point, and play with her dolls. As for me: after two weeks of quick showers a decadent bath with a view on the next to last night was bliss, also morning coffee beneath the pepper tree, the air full with the scent of Franzipan, and the beautiful yellow flowers on the tree which overhangs the far end of the pool, which opened this last week. Beautiful memories of hot sunshine and time spent en famille.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you very much for letting us enjoy your wonderful house. The views from all parts are really spectacular and your super terraces made eating out a real pleasure. The house is probably the best equipped place we have ever stayed in. Many thanks too for your recommendation for Le Sud, two of our party had a fantastic meal there. We are sad to be leaving but hope to return next year.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Striking views over the sea and Islands from some bedrooms and the giant living area as well as from the paved terraces and nooks outside. There are good walks on car free roads down to the beach and past other beautiful houses. We stayed in winter and found most restaurants nearby to be closed so appreciated the amazingly well equipped kitchen for home cooking. Central heating is also useful for cold winter days. Good for a large group, we were only 6 adults and a baby, must bring more of the family next time. Even found some toys for the baby. The caretakers keep the house gleaming and were smiling and helpful in spite of our woeful French. Larger towns nearby such as Cavalaire and St Maxime had supermarkets and restaurants open during winter. Historic towns such as Grimaud in the nearby hills. Some roads in the Alpes behind Rayol have great views and exciting walks but are not for the faint hearted.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We've just returned from a lovely week at La Leazardiere 20-27.06.09 (and found out the origins of the name). What a great place you have! We all enjoyed both the house and the surroundings immensely. Pictures used in adds often exaggerate - in this case I would rather say it didn't do the place justice! We were a big family group from Norway of 11 all in all, and found the house and facilities around (patios, garden, pool, etc) easily facilitated such a large group. Also, the surroundings with a sandy beach to the left and cliffs to the right offered something for everybody. The "map" on the outer wall was of great help.Mohammed showed up shortly after we arrived and gave us a quick tour of the house. The house was in an immaculate state, and all the rooms nicely done up.The cleaning ladies arrived half an hour before we departed and were smiling and courteous (us not speaking much French, the conversation was not very advanced). All in all, we were very happy with our stay (hard to find improvements) and would love to return!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

A really beautiful house, immaculate and very, very comfortable. We spent a very happy week here in July 2009, dividing our time between the pleasant local beach and the lovely pool. The house is fully equipped, with a particularly good kitchen and a spectacular view from the main living area. A great venue for a relaxing family holiday.Did you find this review helpful? About the owner: We are an academic couple living in London. We came here for 4 main reasons. The word ' holiday' and 'Mediterranean ' are a good fit when London is a shade of pewter. Second we hoped the family would hear and speak another language through play, not just text books. Third, we liked, the wine, the food, the markets and wanted to try our hand at Elizabeth David's style. . Finally, The ability to invite guests to stay would be enormous fun.
Why the Owner Chose Le-Rayol-Canadel-Sur-Mer:
For over 20 years we had a house in the Herault, but when our 5 children produced their own, being a 40 minute drive from the Sea was a drawback . We concluded that the only way to have a relaxed holiday was to be independent of cars.
We needed a safe sandy beach, accessible with a push chair If it were traffic free so older children could come and go, that would be a huge boon.
When we finally found this house, we spent 2 years designing and converting it to be a place where three generations could mix or go on independent paths.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Location, location. Being within walking distance of a two knife and fork Michelin restaurant, as well as 4 piazza informal ones, gives everyone scope. A short walk in either direction brings us to two splendid sandy beaches while even closer are stairs down to the rocks where you can swim and snorkle.
Five minutes by car is Rayol village with doctor, post office, pharmacy, marvellous butcher, baker, photographer, beauty salon, newspapers.,small supermarket and weekly market.
The energetic bike everywhere: along the dedicated cycle path to Le Lavandou, up the winding route to the Col for picnics or to the tennis courts at Cavalière.
Perhaps the most memorable part of our holidays are dinners under the pepper tree: candle lit banter stories or serious discussion mixed with lots of cheese, wine and a bit of guitar.
