Inverness cottage description

A Travelers Rest – Inverness Ridge Retreat

Unique one (loft) bedroom ridge top home, an ideal haven for a solo traveler or couple. The design, feel and location make this a very special place.

Solo/Couple (adult) occupancy only and sorry, not pets.
Our rental SEASON STARTS MAY 1st and we are booking vacation stays only -- preference to 5, 7 and 10 night bookings. As possible we will fit in 3-night stays. No single night requests, please.

The house is small yet has a spacious feeling. It has an open floor plan over three levels. There is ample natural light with views of the woods and ridge line. The interior has an eclectic, fun, simple and elegant décor. The aim is for the space to be comfortable and soothing. It is a lovely setting to simply relax, to read, write, and enjoy nature.

The location is an ideal base for hiking and for exploring the region. There are excellent trails within walking distance of the house, some accessible for mountain biking. The home is located within close proximity by car to the Point Reyes National Seashore headquarters, and to a variety of ocean and Tomales Bay beaches. It is close to the local communities of Point Reyes Station, Inverness, Olema and Marshall. These nearby towns offer interesting shops, restaurants, a summer Saturday Farmer’s Market with music and cooking demonstrations, a community center with a full calendar of events, as well as other local activities. The community is visitor friendly. Guests can enjoy Point Reyes Books, drop-in yoga classes at Yoga Toes Studio and much more.

Please read to ensure you understand the unique location/characteristics of this home/property.

Location – The home is located on the Inverness Ridge, up a steep hill, via often narrow paved and well maintained unpaved roads. Guests need to be comfortable with the access via this private neighborhood road.

Remoteness – The ridge offers a serene quietness. Relatively secluded, it is suited for guests comfortable in a more rural, remote setting. There are neighbors, neighboring houses, yet it is usually very quiet. You can enjoy the sound of birds and wind in the trees.

Stairs -The house is on 3 levels, with interior stairs and some exterior stone stairs. Guests must be able to comfortably navigate interior/exterior stairs, with the exterior stairs/paths somewhat uneven.

Shower – There is a full size claw foot tub in the house with a handheld shower, along with an outdoor shower. There is no interior full size shower.

Light & Darkness - The home borders national park. The side of the house with windows and large glass doors faces the woods. There are no window coverings (curtains, shades) as we prefer an inside/outside feel to the place, and the home is private. Guests need to be comfortable with this arrangement. The area is dark at night - no street lights, modest lighting at exterior of home. Guests must be comfortable with this arrangement.

Garden – There is a stone patio, 2 levels, that overlooks the woods and ridgeline. The property has a wild forest feel with an informal garden. The paths are rural, the stepping stones are uneven in places and guests need to be comfortable with this terrain.

Trail Access – There are excellent trails within walking distance of the house, including a fire road extending to Limatour road, with views of the ocean from the trail.

Ambiance – The owner lives part of the time in the home and has an office on the property which she will likely be using during your visit. This will not interfere with your privacy or use of the house, or parking. While guests are welcome to use the DVD and music library, and books, all items belonging to the owner need to be returned to their places before departure. Care also needs to be taken with the owner's furniture and collectables. There is Wi-Fi and guests reserving for an extended stay can request Cable service (additional fee).

Note: The interior furnishings, rugs, etc., are periodically changed and may not reflect the exact decor in the photos.

Keywords: A unique private retreat. Ideal for a couple, or a solo traveler wanting a quiet place to spend time, with ease of access to the Point Reyes National Seashore and the local communities of Inverness, Point Reyes Station, Olema and Marshall, California.

Absolutely awesome place!!! Beautifully furnished and lovely landscaping around the grounds. Lots of wildlife... quails, deer, hummingbirds. Kay was so nice and gracious... really puts forth effort to make sure you have a wonderful stay including a nice packet of info of the surrounding area.

Travelers Rest is as lovely and comfortable as the pictures and descriptions suggest--surrounded by nature on all sides, quiet, private, and beautiful. We were pleased with the proximity to good hiking, trails right out the door as well as those starting from the nearby Point Reyes visitors center. We loved the outdoor shower (excellent towels and soap!), the expansive view from the deck, the visiting quail, and the great collection of music and dvds. The kitchen was well-equipped for our needs. There are also wonderful food options nearby--Saltwater, Stellina, Cow Girl Creamery. And don't miss the pizza and chocolate croissants at Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes. Kay was a pleasure to work, welcoming us with lots of information about the area and much appreciated blackberries, baguette, local honey, and champagne when we arrived. We will definitely be back.

We had our eye on Kay's Getaway for a couple of seasons now, but the dates never worked out. So finally the stars lined up and we were following her perfect directions to my wife's birthday getaway. As one knows, sometimes the descriptions on some listings can be a little rosey, but A Travelers Rest exceeded our expectations. It was just what the doctor ordered, as the saying goes. We had plans to do all kinds of things but the reality is we could not pry ourselves away from this slice of nirvana. It's located in what appears to be a little banana belt in which the coast could stay foggy all day, but not here, The sun would pop out just like clock work mid morning everyday, as you watch all the wildlife start bustling about. In short, we had a great time. Work, commitments, all that fun stuff, just seem to disappear. Thank you again Kay for being the most gracious host and extra care in making our stay so very special. Can't wait to return one day. Mitch and Maggie

I needed a place to get away to 'think' and 'strategize' on getting my business to the next level. I had 3 key criteria: 1) Nature had to surround me. I wanted birds, flowers and wildlife close at hand; 2) Ample work space with sufficient internet access was a must, as although I was going to relax, I also had to produce work and 3) Although I wanted to be 'remote', I didn't want to be so far out there as to be 'too alone' and wanted basic comforts of home (stocked kitchen, nice bathroom, nice bed). A Traveler's Rest more than ticked all the boxes! I saw the first Bobcat of my life, and probably 2 dozen bird species, deer and more right from the patio - I never even had to step foot off the property. And Kay was so thoughtful - having a 'work area' all prepped for me, including a comfortable office chair. Peet's coffee in the fridge...and a wonderful claw foot tub and outdoor shower - bubble bath included. The best thing I can say is this - I was incredibly strategically productive, and yet came home feeling relaxed - as if I'd just had a vacation as opposed to a working retreat. If you need a place to get away and 'think', where the rest of the world seems miles away, and yet is only a few steps away, then A Traveler's Rest is a winner!

Quiet, relaxing, comfortable. Excellent location. If you are trying to complete the last chapter of your Great American Novel and you need tranquility and inspiration, this place is for you. If you need to temporarily hide out from the NSA this may be the ideal spot to get off the grid for a while. And, the special shower is quite enjoyable. My ultimate vacation cottage WILL have one of these.

My husband and I rented Travelers's Rest for five nights in mid/late May. It was even more lovely than we had expected based on the photographs! Starting from the outside, the gardens are glorious and attract lots of birds (Anna's hummingbirds, quail, wrens, etc.) The patio is stunning, and looks over the back garden and then to a line of trees and across to another ridge covered with bishop pines and other evergreens. We had trouble getting ourselves to leave the adirondack chairs to hit the trails, which are one of main things that attracts us to Point Reyes. We were in close proximity to any number of trails which connect into even more. There's a lovely short walk to the end of the road the house is on - since there's only one more house on the road there's very little traffic and great views. A perfect post-prandial walk. The house itself is immaculate and bright. On the evenings that were too cool to sit outside, we pulled our chairs in front of the sliding doors/windows in the living room and watched the sun disappear and the stars come out. We loved the outside shower - make sure to use it when the sun is shining down on it - a wonderful experience. Kay, the owner, was warm, welcoming and very helpful but not at all intrusive. We will definitely stay there again!!!

We had an incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating time at A Traveler's Rest. The house was as we imagined from the pictures and description, yet somehow even better than we imagined! Outside, the deck was the perfect place to sit and drink morning coffee, read in the afternoon, or watch the sun set and slant light across the beautiful view. We watched lizards scamper about during the day and one evening before sunset we watched deer walk past nearby. Inside, the house was spotless, comfortable, and well-appointed. We enjoyed cooking dinner in the kitchen, watching some of the available DVDs, and reading in the living room and in the cozy bed. There's a great walk you can access from the house and even though the house is in a secluded, private, and quiet location, it's a quick drive into either Point Reyes Station or Inverness. Point Reyes Station is one of our favorite places to spend an hour or two on a weekend day--Toby's Coffee Bar, the Bovine Bakery, Cowgirl Creamery and Point Reyes Books are all favorites, and the tiny town is typically bustling and friendly. We also visited a beautiful little restaurant in Inverness that Kay recommended (Saltwater). They were booked for dinner but from 3-5 they offered a bar menu with oysters, soup, salad, and drinks--everything was local and delicious, and the staff were very friendly. Kay was very warm and welcoming when we arrived and when we checked out. Everything about our stay was delightful and we hope to return!

No need to research any more properties - just rent this one. The prior reviews are all spot on, so a little more on where to stay in you are trying to choose and unfamiliar with the area - the towns of Point Reyes and Inverness are tiny, and quite close to this property. So don't base your choice on proximity, but rather what sort of environment you want. Kay (the owner) was very thoughtful, sweet and accommodating even when we accidentally showed up at the wrong time.

A Travelers Rest is a real find. The owner of this charming home has created a very special and welcoming ambience. Our expectations for finding a restful and beautiful retreat for 2-3 days were exceeded from the moment we arrived. Artistic rock and wood formations line the paths around the exterior. A native plant pallette blankets the property with alluring colors and textures, and the interior of the home is inviting in the beauty of its simple yet artful architecture, complete with cathedral ceiling. From behind steaming cups of coffee, we relished the movement of the early morning fog, which almost seemed alive as it wound its way magically through the pines and across the deck. And in the evening - the sunset and stars! Being bird lovers, we were surprised and delighted by the variety and numbers of winged visitors! Really a birders haven. We recorded over twenty species just from the comfort of the chairs on the back deck, and even more on hikes on the ridge nearby. We saw four species of woodpecker -- including the exotic and somewhat uncommon Pileated. A few of the other species were olive-sided flycatcher, Wilson's warbler, yellow warbler, and black-chinned hummingbird. Each morning we were visited by an entire family of California quail on the back deck. The male perched atop a rosemary bush outside the living room window, surveying his domain like royalty. Our hike onto the ridge gave us fantastic views of Limantour Spit on the ocean, Tomales Bay, and surrounding ridges and valleys. Cool, fresh air and a coyote sighting were added bonuses! We'll be back -- and already looking forward to our next visit!

My wife and I had a lovely time at A Travelers Rest. The place was spotless and the setting was fantastic. The house is private and secluded, but easy to find, and a drive into "town" (either Inverness or Pt. Reyes Station) takes only a few minutes. The place was so nice and relaxing, though, that it was tough to leave. The decor is clean and minimal, and everything is very well kept-up. We really liked the loft bed, and the lack of drapes/curtains. You'll want to spend most of your time out front, lounging on the large tree-trunk slabs, gazing out at the trees and enjoying the sun. One morning we even spotted a bobcat in the brush, stalking a quail. What an incredible sight. The outdoor shower was a great touch, too. Finally, the owner, Kay, was extremely helpful and sweet to us, but also gave us our space and didn't interfere. Overall a perfect balance.

About the owner: I settled in West Marin 30 years ago, falling in love with the natural coastal environment and then with the beauty of this wonderful community. I love life in a small town. While commuting out of the area for work, along with traveling whenever possible, I am always grateful to come home at the end of a day or a journey.

                              Why the Owner Chose Inverness:
The quiet ridge top location, remote yet with easy access to town, beaches, park.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The simplicity of enjoying coffee in the morning on the deck with a book or journal. Some mornings light to thick coastal fog rolls in over the ridge, blanketing the house. This usually burns off as the day warms. Other mornings the house is awash with brilliant sunlight. Year round there are birds. Options for the day may include walking/hiking on the roads and trails in the immediate neighborhood. On Saturday a visit to the Farmer's Market in Point Reyes Station (Summer to Fall) is a great way to start the day and meet the community. Then there are many wonderful beaches or trails throughout the region. You can plan a hike through the woods, with Bear Valley Park Headquarters as a base, or pick a trail with a sweeping vista such as Pierce Point. You can follow the coastline on Coast Trail, or combine a beach and lagoon walk at Abbotts Lagoon. In addition to ocean beaches, the bay has several small beaches and swimming spots, such as Heart's Desire Beach. A lunch outing I enjoy is to the Marshall Store in Marshall, a lovely drive north on the west side of the bay. There are frequent events in the area, from music to guest authors and visitors are always welcome. Check out what is happening at the community center/Dance Palace, book store/Point Reyes Book, at Toby's feedbarn, along with the Blackbird Café, Station House Bar and Rancho Nicasio. Guests can make a dinner reservation at Stellina's in Point Reyes, the new Star and Sir in Olema, drop in at Saltwater in Inverness, or one of the other popular restaurant choices. You can also get a delicious to-go picnic dinner from the CowGirl Creamery or from Perry's Delli. Enjoy.
