A Travelers Rest – Inverness Ridge Retreat

Unique one (loft) bedroom ridge top home, an ideal haven for a solo traveler or couple. The design, feel and location make this a very special place.

Winter special: Contact owner for rates on extended stays.

The house is small yet has a spacious feeling. It has an open floor plan over three levels. There is ample natural light with views of the woods and ridge line. The interior has an eclectic, fun, simple and elegant décor. The aim is for the space to be comfortable and soothing. It is a lovely setting to simply relax, to read, write, and enjoy nature.

The location is an ideal base for hiking and for exploring the region. There are excellent trails within walking distance of the house, or mountain biking. It's within close proximity by car to the Point Reyes National Seashore headquarters, and to a variety of ocean and Tomales Bay beaches. It is also close to the local communities of Point Reyes Station, Inverness, Olema and Marshall. These nearby towns offer interesting shops, restaurants, a summer Saturday Farmer’s Market with music and cooking demonstrations, a community center with a full calendar of events, as well as other local activities. The community is visitor friendly. Guests can enjoy Point Reyes Books, drop-in yoga classes at Yoga Toes Studio and much more.

Please read to ensure you understand the unique location/characteristics of home/property.

Location – The home is located on the Inverness Ridge, up a steep hill, via often narrow paved and well maintained unpaved roads. Guests need to be comfortable with the access via this private neighborhood road.

Remoteness – The ridge offers a serene quietness. Relatively secluded, it is suited for guests comfortable in a more rural, remote setting. There are neighbors, neighboring houses, yet it is usually very quiet. You can enjoy the sound of birds and wind in the trees.

Stairs -The house is on 3 levels, with interior stairs and some exterior stone stairs. Guests must be able to comfortably navigate interior/exterior stairs, with the exterior stairs/paths somewhat uneven.

Shower – There is a full size claw foot tub in the house with a handheld shower, along with an outdoor shower. The is not an interior full size shower.

Light & Darkness - The home borders national park. The side of the house with windows and large glass doors faces the woods. There are no window coverings (curtains, shades) as we prefer an inside/outside feel to the place, and the home is private. Guests need to be comfortable with this arrangement.

Garden – There is a stone patio, 2 levels, that overlooks the woods and ridgeline. The property has a wild forest feel with an informal garden. The paths are rural, the stepping stones are uneven in places and guests need to be comfortable with this terrain.

Trail Access – There are excellent trails within walking distance of the house, including a fire road extending to Limatour road, with views of the ocean from the trail.

Ambiance – The owner lives part of the time in the home and has an office on the property which she will likely be using during your visit. This will not interfere with your privacy or use of the house, or parking. While guests are welcome to use the DVD, music library, or books, all items belonging to the owner need to be returned to their places before departure. Care also needs to be taken with the owner's furniture and collectables.

Keywords: A unique private retreat. Ideal for a couple, or a solo traveler wanting a quiet place to spend time, with ease of access to the Point Reyes National Seashore and the local communities of Inverness, Point Reyes Station, Olema and Marshall, California.

We had an incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating time at A Traveler's Rest. The house was as we imagined from the pictures and description, yet somehow even better than we imagined! Outside, the deck was the perfect place to sit and drink morning coffee, read in the afternoon, or watch the sun set and slant light across the beautiful view. We watched lizards scamper about during the day and one evening before sunset we watched deer walk past nearby. Inside, the house was spotless, comfortable, and well-appointed. We enjoyed cooking dinner in the kitchen, watching some of the available DVDs, and reading in the living room and in the cozy bed. There's a great walk you can access from the house and even though the house is in a secluded, private, and quiet location, it's a quick drive into either Point Reyes Station or Inverness. Point Reyes Station is one of our favorite places to spend an hour or two on a weekend day--Toby's Coffee Bar, the Bovine Bakery, Cowgirl Creamery and Point Reyes Books are all favorites, and the tiny town is typically bustling and friendly. We also visited a beautiful little restaurant in Inverness that Kay recommended (Saltwater). They were booked for dinner but from 3-5 they offered a bar menu with oysters, soup, salad, and drinks--everything was local and delicious, and the staff were very friendly. Kay was very warm and welcoming when we arrived and when we checked out. Everything about our stay was delightful and we hope to return!

No need to research any more properties - just rent this one. The prior reviews are all spot on, so a little more on where to stay in you are trying to choose and unfamiliar with the area - the towns of Point Reyes and Inverness are tiny, and quite close to this property. So don't base your choice on proximity, but rather what sort of environment you want. Kay (the owner) was very thoughtful, sweet and accommodating even when we accidentally showed up at the wrong time.

A Travelers Rest is a real find. The owner of this charming home has created a very special and welcoming ambience. Our expectations for finding a restful and beautiful retreat for 2-3 days were exceeded from the moment we arrived. Artistic rock and wood formations line the paths around the exterior. A native plant pallette blankets the property with alluring colors and textures, and the interior of the home is inviting in the beauty of its simple yet artful architecture, complete with cathedral ceiling. From behind steaming cups of coffee, we relished the movement of the early morning fog, which almost seemed alive as it wound its way magically through the pines and across the deck. And in the evening - the sunset and stars! Being bird lovers, we were surprised and delighted by the variety and numbers of winged visitors! Really a birders haven. We recorded over twenty species just from the comfort of the chairs on the back deck, and even more on hikes on the ridge nearby. We saw four species of woodpecker -- including the exotic and somewhat uncommon Pileated. A few of the other species were olive-sided flycatcher, Wilson's warbler, yellow warbler, and black-chinned hummingbird. Each morning we were visited by an entire family of California quail on the back deck. The male perched atop a rosemary bush outside the living room window, surveying his domain like royalty. Our hike onto the ridge gave us fantastic views of Limantour Spit on the ocean, Tomales Bay, and surrounding ridges and valleys. Cool, fresh air and a coyote sighting were added bonuses! We'll be back -- and already looking forward to our next visit!

My wife and I had a lovely time at A Travelers Rest. The place was spotless and the setting was fantastic. The house is private and secluded, but easy to find, and a drive into "town" (either Inverness or Pt. Reyes Station) takes only a few minutes. The place was so nice and relaxing, though, that it was tough to leave. The decor is clean and minimal, and everything is very well kept-up. We really liked the loft bed, and the lack of drapes/curtains. You'll want to spend most of your time out front, lounging on the large tree-trunk slabs, gazing out at the trees and enjoying the sun. One morning we even spotted a bobcat in the brush, stalking a quail. What an incredible sight. The outdoor shower was a great touch, too. Finally, the owner, Kay, was extremely helpful and sweet to us, but also gave us our space and didn't interfere. Overall a perfect balance.

We recently spent two very special days at Kay's place and we are already dying to come back! Her home is perched on top of the Inverness Ridge with sweeping views of the forest and lots of perfectly-placed windows that accentuate the views. One of the highlights was making breakfast one morning and looking out the window to watch a family of California quail with a gaggle of fuzzy babies in tow scurry across the terrace! There are lots of hiking trails easily accessible right from the house. Kay is the ultimate host; kind, available if you need her and willingly gives you your privacy. You can tell she genuinely cares about her guests having a wonderful time. The cottage is gorgeously designed and is a real nature lovers dream. High ceilings, a very comfortable bed and a great attention to details were just a few of the aspects of the house we loved. We were a little unsure at first about the outdoor shower but it provides just the right combination of privacy and exposure to nature that it quickly became one of our (many) favorite things about Kay's house. We'd highly recommend renting Kay's place for your next California getaway and we will definitely be returning ourselves!

I stayed here over the weekend following the 4th of July, and am already plotting my return. This is a truly special place, especially for those looking to escape the hectic pace of city life. The house itself is straight out of a dream: open, warm, comfortable, spacious, clean, and full of character. The outdoor shower and claw-footed bathtub alone are worth the price of admission, but that's only a fraction of the charm. Kay was the perfect hostess: available and accommodating, but never invasive. There are a multitude of hiking, swimming, biking, exploring, and dining options... all within a few miles. Your best bet, however, is to pack a great book and a bottle of wine; you won't want to leave. I'd happily spend the rest of my days watching sunsets from the back deck, sipping and reading.

Kay's cottage is absolutely stunning. The architecture is amazing, the view is breathtaking and peaceful, and the home perfectly appointed. We had a fantastic escape from San Francisco. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to settle in and explore.

About the owner: I settled in West Marin 30 years ago, falling in love with the natural coastal environment and then with the beauty of this wonderful community. I love life in a small town. While commuting out of the area for work, along with traveling whenever possible, I am always grateful to come home at the end of a day or a journey.

                              Why the Owner Chose Inverness:
The quiet ridge top location - remote yet with easy access to town, beaches, park.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The simplicity of enjoying coffee in the morning on the deck with a book or journal. Some mornings light to thick coastal fog rolls in over the ridge, surrounding the house. This usually burns off as the day warms. Other mornings the house is awash with brilliant sunlight. Year round there are birds. Options for the day may include walking/hiking on the roads and trails in the immediate neighborhood. On Saturday a visit to the Farmer's Market in Point Reyes Station (Summer to Fall) is a great way to start the day. Then there are many wonderful beaches or trails throughout the region. You can plan a hike through the woods, with Bear Valley Park Headquarters as a base, or pick a trail with a sweeping vista such as Pierce Point. You can follow the coastline on Coast Trail, or combine a beach and lagoon walk at Abbotts Lagoon. In addition to ocean beaches, the bay has several small beaches and swimming spots, such as Heart's Desire Beach. A lunch outing I enjoy is to the Marshall Store in Marshall, a lovely drive north on the west side of the bay. There are frequent events in the area, from music to guest authors and visitors are always welcome. Check out what is happening at the community center/Dance Palace, book store/Point Reyes Book, at Toby's feedbarn, along with the Blackbird Café, Station House Bar and Rancho Nicasio. Guests can make a dinner reservation at Stellina's in Point Reyes, the new Star and Sir in Olema, drop in at Saltwater in Inverness, or one of the other popular restaurant choices. You can also get a delicious to-go picnic dinner from the CowGirl Creamery or from Perry's Delli. Enjoy.
