How we wish we had more time at Deer Haven! The views were wonderful no matter what the weather. We enjoyed the hot tub and the wildlife equally. While we had one small issue the first day we arrived, the owners were extremely service oriented and had it fixed in no time. While the check-out list seemed awfully long at first glance (this was the our 3rd rental through VRBO) it took no time at all. We were unable to secure a 4-wheel drive rental but the sedan we rented made it up the hill just fine.

This cabin is a hidden gem with stunning views from it's picture windows. Do believe the owners when they say you may need AWD to navigate the driveway. We found ourselves stuck in a late season snow that was forecasted to be much less ominous than it ended up being. We woke up to the most gorgeous snowscape...but also to the task of descending the drive. The owners were very proactive and arranged snow cleaning within a short time of my calling them. Would definitely like to return to this residence for future vacations.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Owner response: Front wheel drive is fine for most of the year, but if snow is predicted, you will certainly need AWD/4WD. Heavy snow is pretty rare in the Shenandoah Valley.

My husband and I are always looking for a place that offers the benefits of seclusion...peace and quiet...restful and serene... Over the past few years we have found such places, but they were more than secluded, they were isolated. Not so with Deer Haven. You have the benefits of seclusion without the feeling of isolation. It was a short drive to civilization and area attractions. In nearby Woodstock you can have all your shopping needs met, from antiquing to groceries. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area, also. We visited the Shenandoah Vineyard, the New Market Hall of Valor and Civil War Battlefield, Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive (which is a little further away, but worth the trip). After enjoying the local attractions, we would head back to Deer Haven to unwind and relax in the hot tub. We also enjoyed seeing a sky full of stars as we searched for constellations in the night sky. We enjoyed short hikes on the property, collecting our own firewood and sitting around the fire pit as the evening got cooler. We enjoyed reading when the weather was not so nice and as our evening activity. There is the option of streaming movies or using DVDs with the nice flat screen provided. Though we didn't use it, it was nice to have the option. Also, a big thanks to the owners for providing WIFI as I used my smart phone to check on weather and find area attractions. All in all, we had a wonderful week in the peaceful Shenandoah Mountains. Thanks to the owners for sharing your home with us!

You can judge how much I love this place from the fact that this was my second visit (my first review is below). I am grateful to the owners for making their house available to me. Special thanks to John and Marcela (I hope that is right) for being promptly responsive to my requests.

We spent 4 wonderful days at Deer Haven in April. The setting is beautiful- a well stocked, fully equipped home nestled up in the mountains with a spectacular view of the mountains and valley. Sitting on the deck watching the sunset and the colors of the sky and mountains change is worth the trip up the hill! The fire pit provided the perfect spot for smores while the secluded location allowed for true privacy and tranquility. Hiking, canoeing, wine tasting and caverns are all nearby providing options if one choses to venture out of Deer Haven for a few hours. Thank you to the owners for sharing your beautiful spot in the Shenandoah Valley!

I was looking for a place to get away from work for few days, get back to nature and relax. This place is absolutely perfect. It is secluded, but you are actually a very short drive (or hike) from civilization. There is a lot of stuff to do, if you are not satisfied with just hiking in the woods. The nature is spectacular! Views are amazing! The house is very modern and well-appointed, the owners actually seem to have more stuff than they allow in the description. The drive is not bad at all. Granted I only had to deal with fair weather, but I am a new driver, and I only have Toyota Corolla, and I did not find it difficult or intimidating. Just don't race on it. Thank you so much!

This was a really great find. A wonderful getaway less than 2 hours outside of DC. Amazing views over the Shenandoah Valley, including windows and decks facing the sunset, lots of great hiking spots nearby, and all the amenities you need. Definitely left thinking about our next visit.

My fiancee and I are always looking for romantic getaways for our anniversary, and Deer Haven was no exception! From the moment we walked into the house, we were completely blown away! From the beautiful decorative touches to the astounding architecture, this was definitely a phenomenal property! By far, our favorite part of the home was the arched, wall to wall, ceiling to ceiling windows in both the living room and master bedroom. Waking up to that view truly took my breath away! This is the perfect place for couples or families to truly get away from it all! Be sure to have a reliable vehicle, though, because the gravel road up to the home is long, narrow, and winding! My only qualm, would be that the hot tub had been turned off and the water was low. We called the owners, and they were incredibly helpful. But unfortunately, by the time the hot tub had heated up, we were heading out the door. We had booked a place specifically for a hot tub, so that was a little disappointing. However, we loved that house so much, that we still had a lovely time! And looking at the guest book, we seem to be the only ones who have had that problem. All in all, Deer Haven was a fantastic place for our romantic getaway. As long as the hot tub was up and running, we would definitely stay here again!

Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Owner response: Glad you had such a good time Caitlin and Chris! Thanks for the review. The hot tub is serviced regularly - sorry about the low water - it is back to normal. Note: to save energy, we ask our guests to turn down the hot tub water temperature when they leave. In the welcome packet, we recommend turning up the water temperature ASAP if you plan to use the hot tub.

Deer haven is a wonderful vacation home to explore the shenandoah. The house is very well decorated and has an almost zen-like feel to it. Sitting on the porch and enjoying the wonderful views over the valley or watching the stars from the hot tub at night are the perfect way to slip away into relaxation. The house is secluded and one of a kind and the owners truly have put a lot of care and detail into making the place a wonderful vacation home. Thank you for opening your doors and we will surely be back!

We had a wonderful time and it was the perfect get a way for us to spend some time with our children and in-laws with out the destractions of our busy lives. Hope we can go back again in the late Spring time and do some more hiking and explore the little town some more! Property was well kept, had everything we needed there to prepare some meals but wish we would have brought some foil or plastic wrap for the extra food. We did not get a chance to grill but it was wonderful to have that option for lunch or dinner. The driveway up the hill made for a great work out/ hike around the area, such an amazing view. Would definately reccomend this vacation rental to friends and family! We joined a trail netflix and streamed some new movies from my computer and were also able to find the hockey game online to view on the TV for my sports junky husband.

This vacation spot is nothing short of amazing to say the least. Waking up every morning and looking thru the master bedroom window was breathtaking!! Then to wake up make our morning coffee and sit in the rocking chairs on the front porch was awesome. The home had everything we needed all we had to bring was groceries to cook. Being that it was October the leafs were changing colors and watching the hot air balloons float by were wonderful. My husband and I were married in April but due to the army had to take our honeymoon in October. I am more than happy to say Deer Haven will be our greatest memorable spot and the town was more then welcoming! We loved the caverns, wine vineyards, pumpkin patches and my favorite was the apple orchard visit. There are plenty of things to do and the brouches at the cabin really helped with our imaginations and travel. I recommend Deer Haven to the single, married and with kids as it is a wonderful place. I must add you defiantly want to use a 4 wheel drive going up the landscape to the home. It is a narrow and steep drive that is best not first travel at night try daylight first! Thanks for the welcome wine John we enjoyed it while we watched the sunset over the valley from the hot tub!! (Might want to add some extra lighting out there) Wonderful memories, The Abrams

Dear John, Thank you for the opportunity to spend three wonderful days at Deer Haven last weekend, Oct 15-17. The property, the scenery and the weather were all a perfect combination for our first-time exploration of the Shenandoah Valley. The fall colors were spectacular and the view from Deer Haven was even more impressive than the VRBO description suggested. The 'scenic drive' on 675 to Luray was enjoyed multiple times. The house was clean, well-kept, well-supplied and very user-friendly. Everything as advertised. One comment on our selection of Deer Haven --- we wanted a 'pet free' property and found few such in the area. Please know that we (and probably many others) appreciated that aspect of Deer Haven too. A great time at a great location!!! Thank you Bob & L

Our two-day couples' retreat to Deer Haven was exactly that - a retreat from everything! We spent our time grilling outside on the deck, relaxing in the hot tub overlooking the valley and mountains, playing horseshoes in the yard, and reading in the rocking chairs on the front deck. The house was beautifully decorated - it was modern and chic, yet comfortable and lived-in. The two bedrooms could not be more different - one is zen-like and modern, with a beautiful view overlooking the valley; and the other, cozy and comfy, with a cabin-like feel. The house was perfect for two couples, and was well-kept and ordered. The kitchen was well-equipped, (though since two of our group are chefs, we brought many of our own knives, etc). We didn't go out for any meals, so I can't speak to anything nearby. We pretty much stayed put the entire trip, though did spend one afternoon hiking around the neighboring woods. The owner and management team were organized and responsive to any issues or questions that we had. The only hesitation I have in writing this review is that I don't want Deer Haven to become so popular that we can't return! Many thanks to the owner, John, for creating such a great little house in the woods. I can't wait to go back.

My husband and I wanted a quiet and peaceful place to revitalize with a view. Believe me, after you trek up the hidden gravel road to Deer Haven -- it is amazing!!! This home is very secluded so it definitely is quiet and peaceful. This place is serenity on a mountainside, surrounded by woods with an amazing view of the Shenandoah Valley. The foliage was just starting so if you are a leaf peeper it is probably best to go a week or two later then when we arrived in the first week of October. This whimsical chalet has every amenity you could want or need when you get there so I took others advice and stocked up on stuff from the local Walmart. It has a full size kitchen, two full sized bathrooms (one on each floor). The master bedroom has an incredible view of the valley!!! It also has a brand new washer/dryer set in the basement and another refrigerator if needed, too. It has everything you would have at home but is secluded away from work and your everyday life. It's a great place to escape!!! Most importantly, this place has a view that is truly spectacular and I could sit there and gaze at it for hours (except for when I was in the hot tub)!!! (: The side deck on the house is very roomy, has a hot tub, table w/ chairs, chaise loungers and gas grill. If you're looking for a great place to escape, look no further. Deer Haven has it all .....

after the devistating flood that ravished our home, a getaway is just what my husband and myself needed. Although I had no idea my husband booked this place until we were on the road. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was just what we both needed. Quiet and secluded. Just beautiful views and clean home. Thank you for opening up your place for us. We will be back and have already told our friends of your wonderful place. God bless.

Owner response: We are so pleased you were able to relax at Deer Haven and remove yourselves, if only for a few days, from the flooding back home. We look forward to having you back when the time comes. By the way, all returning guests receive a 10% discount.

We had a great time at Deer Haven. The view from the master bedroom and living room was breathtaking. The house was modern and was decorated very smartly. While in Virginia we visited Skyline drive, Shenandoah Caverns, The Natural Bridge, Luray Caverns and we went apple and peach picking. The best was sitting on the patio and watching the sunset over the mountains. I highly recommend Deer Haven. We loved the area so much we are looking for a property nearby.

Deer Haven was clean, comfortable, and nicely supplied with everything needed for a relaxing "home away from home." It was an ideal location from which to launch numerous excursions into beautiful Virginia countryside; indeed, through mountains and valleys. The cabin was pleasantly secluded. The view from the cabin was breath-taking.

We are from Australia and the UK and booked to stay here for 4 nights, it was a beautiful house up a mountain very remote from anyone else so if you were to have a party it wouldn't be a problem with neighbours. The house is big, an beautifully decorated. You can lounge around in the living room with the tv and fireplace or just sit relax and enjoy the floor to ceiling view of the mountains and valleys in airconditioning comfort. If you want to be outside there is a balcony with 2 rocking chairs with a great view, or go out the side to the patio with deck chairs, lounge area, eating area or the hot tub. A big plus was the outdoor audio system and the bbq as the weather was beautiful. The upstairs bedrooms are nice if you like light and amazing views the master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows, if you like to sleep in the second bedroom has blinds. Everything has been thought of in this house except wine glasses, but if your up for a party there is a massive collection of cocktail glasses and shakers ect. There is a massive basement as well with a washer and dryer and a second fridge if your desperate for room. This place is a perfect place for a party or a romantic getaway. As a side note there is a massive walmart nearby I suggest going there and stocking up before going to the house as it is a tough drive up the mountain if you dont have a 4 wheeled drive as you tyres can often spin on the gravel road. There are also some encouraging signs on trees as you are getting closer, but if its evening it could look spooky haha. I totally recommend Deer Haven for anyone who needs a vacation. They have done a great job with the house Have fun.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Owner response: We are so glad everyone is having such a good time in our first season renting out Deer Haven. Wine glasses are located in the upper cupboard to the left of the kitchen sink. Enjoy!
