12/31/12 GOODWIN FISHING: By the time I got into the water, it was already 2 pm. The water did not look too promising as the prior storms had brought silt into the lake & clarity was down to 5 feet. But it was a beautiful sunny, 55 degree day, so I paddled east toward Tulloch Dam. There was hardly any current. The CDEC reported only about 300 CFS being released from Tulloch Lake. The water was between 51 & 53 degrees, getting colder as I progressed upstream. The dang weeds were everywhere in 8 feet of water or less. Restricted to deeper water, I had no hits until about 2:30 pm when, about 500 feet short of the Tulloch Dam orange floats, I landed a nice 19 in. rainbow in about 14 feet of water. I was fishing 3 flies about 3 feet apart attached to 9 feet of PineLine 8 wt. fluorocarbon leader & then a 50-foot Rio T-14 sinking line using a 6 wt. rod. The fly closest to the leader was a #10 punk perch tied by Tom Knoth & donated to me by Mitch Matsumoto; the second fly was a #10 black seal bugger wrapped with red copper wire; & the third fly was a #10 black seal bugger wrapped with green copper wire. The first trout hit the punk perch.
I then entered the area where the water enters Goodwin from Tulloch & tossed the flies 90 degrees across the moving water & stripped them in rapidly. Nothing. Then, at about 2:45 pm, I moved my float tube into the moving water & tossed downstream as I paddled & twitched the line; a hard hit & the black/green fly was broken off by an unseen Whopper! That was encouraging! Paddling up toward the floats, I reversed course & paddled downstream, bang! I landed a 19 in. hen. Over the next 1.5 hours, I landed one fish after another with the largest ones exhibiting spawning colors, & most trout hitting the black/red seal bugger. By 4:30 pm I was back at my dock, having hooked 14 fish & landed 11: 2-17 in., 2-19 in., 2-20 in., 3-21 in. & 1-22 in. - all rainbows; & 1-14 in. Kokanee. This surpassed my prior best day on Goodwin in January of 2011 when my friend & I landed 11 trout between 20 in. & 25 in. in the same area in 4 hrs. Roy Gunter
5/06/12 DRIFTING THE TUOLUMNE RIVER BELOW LA GRANGE: The weather was perfect--70-80 degrees, blue skies, light wind & cool water (54 degrees). The water level seemed a little high, about 700 CFS, but the River Valley was beautiful.
Fishing was easy. (Who would have thought, during a full moon too.) I think I caught over 30 rainbows/steelhead. My fishing partner also hooked a Striper about 7 lbs. The water was so clear I saw him hit the fly. He hit a sz 8 white Crystal Bugger. I should have taken pictures of the drift, but I was too busy catching fish. The river is full of fish right now. The upper river was all rainbows/steelhead some to 22 in. (at least on this trip). The half-way point had added the Stripers, Squawfish & Carp (big schools of them), but I could not catch any. The second half still held plenty of trout if you were getting deep enough. The fishing slowed down for the others, but picked up for me. I was using straight T-11 off my 6wt & was getting to the bottom of the fast runs which obviously paid off.
The white Crystal Bugger size 10 was a killer on the upper stretch, but did not do as well in the lower half. There it was olive Bunny Leeches or burnt orange or olive Seal Buggers.
With the river full of trout & a chance at a few Stripers, I think this float is well worth taking. Also, on a Sunday, nobody else was on the river. Tight Lines. Roy Gunter
1/15/12 FLOATING THE STANISLAUS RIVER: Harry P., Peter F. & Roy Gunter floated three miles down the Stanislaus River from Knights Ferry to Horseshoe Recreation Area. After, dinner, “revelry” & a nights stay at Goodwin, we entered the water at about 8 am. That morning it was cold enough for ice on our windshields. The flows were perfect at 500 - 600 CFS as we approached Russian Rapids 1/8th mile down river. A sign offered a portage around; but Peter, a first time river float tuber, “offered” to let me go first. I had been through this rapid several times before at lower flows. This time, it was one hell of a nice ride as the waves washed over the top of my Fatcat & around my waist. Then, Peter swept through amazed to be alive & how easy it was, although he probably got a little wetter in his low rider tube.
Fishing 1 mile further down river produced only a few rainbows 14 inches or less until the river became wider & the flow moderate 4 to 5 feet over weed beds. I knew immediately the rainbows would be here if anywhere & worked the water hard, back & forth with my go-to river fly, a black #6 pistol peet - for the uninitiated traditionalists, a seal bugger with a small metal propeller just behind the hook’s eye. Soon all 3 of us were tossing pistol peets cross current & stripping them in fast. Among my catches was a beautiful 20 in. rainbow. At the end of this productive 400-foot run, a 30 in. steelhead showed me his entire back as he rested at the top of a rapids. But he wanted nothing to do with Mr. Peet, so I introduced Harry to him as he showed his back again 20 ft. between us. For 30 minutes Harry tossed every fly he could think of at the steelhead, but he had left his #000 treble hooks at home, so he too finally had to abandon his efforts.
Halfway through the drift, in 10 mins. we spotted a great egret, a bald eagle & an osprey. Later, Harry landed a 19 in. rainbow on a gold #6 burks bullet head minnow.
Before we left the water at 4 pm, it had warmed to 60 degrees under a mostly sunny blue sky. We had been the only humans on the river that day. It was by far my best float ever on the Stanislaus out of 3 prior.
I’m looking forward to improved flows for floats on the Merced River around Snelling & on the Tuolumne River around La Grange. I love these Central Valley tail waters which are all within 45 min. from Goodwin.

TOM KNOTH FISHOUT 3/8-3/10/13:
3/8: 2 of us fished all day & a 3rd angler fished the afternoon. The 3rd angler was skunked as I was in the morning. I took 4 fish in the afternoon to 21' on a small beadhead wooly bugger w/rust brown body & dark brown tail. The standout (as usual) was Mitch Matsumoto who took 23 rainbows up to 24'. Most of Mitch's fish were caught by working the edges with a sz 8 med. olive punk perch (a seal bugger variant) & a half doz. of the fish were caught on a sz 8 olive/black wooly worm. Mitch casts w/i a couple ft. of the tulles or tree overhangs on the banks. He starts stripping shortly after the cast w/variations of 1, 2, or 3 strips w/definite pauses in between (for example: strip-strip-pause-strip-pause-strip-strip-strip-pause). Most of his fish were caught close to the edges.
3/9: Mitch had 6 trout on the olive/black wooly worm before leaving at about noon. Mark Pierce took some fish using a sz 18 beadhead midge, black w/gold rib. He fished it 8 ft. under an indicator in the inlet current. David Klepper (guide-Yosemite Sierra Fly Fishing) had 9 fish & lost 12 that either broke off or got off. David's method was to indicator fish w/the fly 9-10 ft. below the indicator. His unique fly choice was a black wooly bugger w/a purple tail tied on a 1/16 oz jig hook. His catches in the morning were in the inlet current & his afternoon catches were near the edges on the sw side of the lake. When there was no wind on the water, David would twitch his indicator every few seconds to impart movement on the fly.
3/10: I was the only one who remained to fish. I spent the morning-early afternoon working the banks w/Mitch's method. But there was little wind & the fish just didn't seem to be there. My guess is that the fish will not be in the shallows if there isn't a little chop on the water. Also in these conditions, if your presentation is not absolutely delicate, the fish will be spooked.
Afternoon: I focused on dropoffs adjacent to flats. There are some nice flats 3-5 ft. deep in the sw part of the lake. The trout would occasionally move into the flats to feed during callibaetis & midge hatches, but w/little wind, I think they were primarily hanging out near the dropoffs w/good weed growth (8-12 ft. deep). I took 5 fish in a couple of hrs & lost a few others when I started focusing on these areas. My fly was a sz 10 beadhead seal bugger w/olive/rust body & dark olive tail.
The rental has a warm feel to it w/big kitchen & great views. 2 great dinners w/poker Sat.
