'The Lookout' is a fully furnished cottage with a convenient back deck that provides a rare panoramic view of Antietam battlefield. Looking beyond the pastoral battlefield provides one a spectacular 50-mile view extending to the mountains of Western Maryland. Between the awesome sunsets and the abundant wildlife (deer, hummingbirds, hawks, etc.), a perfect place for relaxation.
Conveniently located approximately 70 miles from downtown DC and Baltimore. Less than 25 miles from Frederick and Hagerstown.
“The Lookout” is surrounded by civil war history. While only 10 minutes from Antietam battlefield, several other battlefields are within easy driving distance: South Mountain battlefields - 10 miles, Monocacy battlefield - 25 miles, Harpers Ferry - 15 miles, Gettysburg - 45 miles (retrace Lee’s retreat thru Williamsport). John Brown’s headquarters is less than 10 miles away.
Use Gathland State Park as a starting point for some day hiking on the Appalachian Trail - 6 miles away. Or drive 10 miles over to the C&O canal for some easy hiking or if you bring your bikes – some relaxing bike riding. Either method is a great way to have some fun outdoors - even get some exercise.
Other activities: Outlet shopping in Hagerstown and Gettysburg, antique stores, restaurants - all close by and easy to get to.

The Lookout definitely lives up to both the photographs and other comments posted here. A captivating view of the battleground and mountains beyond, wonderfully friendly hosts Sandy and Brian, well-appointed home with everything visitors might require, and tremendous variety of activities in surrounding towns and countryside. Most people know of the Civil War sites around and that is what draws many to visit this area. So history buffs can spend hours on The Lookout deck studying the panoramic view of Antietam. But it is only a short drive to other fascinating places: Harper’s Ferry and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O Canal Parks, Cunningham Falls, the Appalachian Trail, and great small towns for walking, shopping and dining. But the area should also appeal to fans of popular romance writer Nora Roberts. She lives in Keedysville, where The Lookout is located, and she and her family are actively involved with nearby Boonsboro. Her husband owns a bookstore there and her son recently opened a fantastic restaurant there. Try to visit Dan's at least once while in the area! So the area has something for everyone: history buffs, readers, outdoors enthusiasts, foodies and general travelers. And The Lookout puts one right in the center of it all!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The listing is accurate (it does have a spectacular view), and the hosts have really thought of everything. The cottage is very clean, well-kempt, and has an open floor plan. This is a great cottage to get away from it all and save a few bucks by preparing your own meals in their fully functional kitchen (stove, refrigerator, microwave, plates, cuttlery, and even coffee filters! ONLY drawback (and I do mean ONLY) is no Wi-Fi.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I were looking for a place to stay while sightseeing in Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper's Ferry during Oct. 1 - 6. What a perfect spot! The pictures on VRBO are exactly what the house looks like, but it is even better when you get there. The owner greeted us in person with a welcome basket of treats including coffee, tea, popcorn, and homemade honey! Delicious! The Lookout is exceptionally clean, updated, and comfortable with plenty of space to hang clothes and store gear. The kitchen is simple and functional with all the implements needed for easy meal prep. Sandy has provided a huge binder filled with flyers and maps to local places of interest. She also is a wealth of knowledge about the best back roads and special spots off the tourist grid. Over a period of 5 days, we enjoyed Gettysburg, Cunningham Falls State Park, Antietam, Sharpsburg, Shepherdstown, and Harper's Ferry. For groceries we shopped Weis Market in Boonesboro, Red Byrd's quick store at the end of our road, and a produce stand in Boonesboro filled with local produce such as winter squash and local fresh apples. Of course the front deck of the home is the namesake of The Lookout. What an amazing view! We would recommend The Lookout to anyone wanting to visit this area as a great value, comfortable and safe place to stay and would welcome a return visit!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

What an appropriate name for this immaculate home with such great views! Brian and Sandy have thought of every detail to make us feel like "home away from home" from the welcoming basket of coffee, popcorn, fresh honey harvested from their own bees and sparkling grape juice in celebration of our anniversaries to the provided paper products and fine linens. We were in "vacation mode" in no time! We enjoyed exploring Boonsboro, the Grottoes Caverns, Harpers Ferry, and Antietam National Park. The self-guided historical tour in the quaint town of Frederick was the perfect way to spend a fall afternoon (especially appreciated the brick-lined canal that runs through the heart of this town and the Civil War Medical Museum). Nutters is THE PLACE for the most GENEROUS, delicious portions of ice cream. Our visit was highlighted by the trip to Cumberland for the Western Scenic Railroad ride to Frostburg. Shopping in Hagerstown and visiting local festivals completed this week of vacation. We so enjoyed the views in the morning, at sunset, and again at night with the twinkling lights. This was our first VRBO experience and we could not be happier! Thank you, Sandy and Brian, for the binder of sight-seeing ideas and for the warm hospitality.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

My husband and I just came back from our two night stay at The Lookout. We like to find off the beaten path mom & pop motels, but thought it would be nice to try a rental. I think we found our new way of travel. It was great to hear birds and trees, not doors slamming and ice machines. I felt like I was staying at a friend's house - with all the personal touches - quilts, soft towels, bottled water, honey and soap! This was the perfect place to escape and relax, especially on the deck. We can't wait to bring family and friends here to explore the many things in Western Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. You can't beat the price! Especially if you have a family. Brian and Sandy were great hosts and a wealth of information.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

You CANNOT beat the price of this immaculate, beautiful home with a spectacular view!!! My husband, friends and I found many small towns to explore--Brunswick is wonderful small town ("Beans in the Belfry" & "Antiques and Old Stuff" are a must), Sharpsburg is charming & of course, we visited the Antietam Battlefield. We loved the Walking Ghost Tour in Harpers Ferry (the entire town is just the epitome of quaint) and we meandered around Middleway, WV to discover the town of "Wizard of Clip" fame. Thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the morning with a cup of coffee on the deck just taking in the view. Received our deposit check back VERY QUICKLY, too. Thanks, Sandy & Brian for a memorable & very comfortable vacation!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

THE OWNER TOLD US TO CALL ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE WE ARRIVED, SO WE DID. WHEN WE ARRIVED WERE PLEASENTLY SUPRIZED AT THE BEAUTY THAT SURROUNDS "THE LOOKOUT". THE OWNERS MET US THERE THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY. NOT ONLY WERE THEY A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SURROUNDING AREA, BUT PROVIDED US WITH A SCRAPEBOOK TYPE BINDER THAT HAD ADDS AND BROCHURES ABOUT RESTURANTS, SHOPING, AND THE BATTLEFIELDS. THE HOUSE LOOKED EXACTLY AS THE PHOTOS PICTURED IT BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. IT WAS A WONDERFUL WEEK FOR US AND NOT ONLY WILL WE BE BACK BUT WE WILL RECOMMEND "THE LOOKOUT" TO OUR FRIENDS.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My first visit to Washington County, MD was 5 years ago and we've fallen in love with the area. This is the best place we have ever stayed in the Sharpsburg area. I echo all of the comments in previously posted reviews. The owners have gone out of their way to make this a cozy, comfortable home to stay in. Would highly recommend this property- so much to see and do in the area. The only negative could be the gun club down the road. The peace and quiet would be shattered if there was a gathering during your stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
