Karangasem villa description
Nestled where two fresh-water rivers run into the Lembok Straights of the Indian Ocean, Villa Agung was selected as ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST's lead feature in the 'Exotic Homes Edition' in August 2009 for its unique design, luxurious appointments and magnificent setting. Designed by Linda Garland, built by a team of Sumatran master carpenters, the owners spared no expense in making the home environmentally friendly( built with all re-cycled wood) and seamlessly integrated into the natural setting.
In front lies the ocean and behind towers Bali's main 12,000 foot volcano, Mt. Agung, the 'sacred mother of Bali.' To the north over the terraced rice fields is the Seraya mountain range whose cooling breezes blow in most nights. Thus the property is a 360 degree experience.
The villa is actually six villas organized at the ocean's edge with 2500 square foot long house which serves as the living room/dining room house for the five bedroom villa.
Villa Agung, the master bedroom house, is another 2500 square foot long house with two bathrooms (her's has a bidet), a king-sized bed, living room area, two-person jacuzzi bathtub and both ocean and mountain view decks.
The villa come with the friendly staff of ten people: two cooks, three house caretakers, three gardners and two night security men there all day to meet your every need, including cleaning, and providing a delicious breakfast a day provided in the price of the villas. Lunch and dinner can be arranged for an additional amount. They are all smiles and will climb the many cocoanut trees to give you some 'ayer kalapa muda,' young cocoanut milk, or fresh-sqeezed orange juice, Bintang beer or sodas all day.
There are surf breaks nearby and surf guides can be arranged by the staff and are recommended to insure happy integration into the line-up. The local break, Pura Delam, can generate waves from two-feet to double overhead depending on the season and the swells. You can see the break from the living room/dining room house to tell what the swell is doing. It's a five minute drive away.
There is snorkeling right out front for lobster and sea life observation and excellent diving all over the area including wreck diving in nearby Tabanan. Bali is a haven for all water sports.
Facials and massages can be had at the villas with notices to the staff and are highly recommended and inexpensive. Also, recommended is to hire a car and driver by the week so that your freedom of movement is assured. It is NOT recommended to drive in Bali as the traffic behavior is quite wild and unpredictable. Cars and drivers are also very reasonable in cost and can be arranged before or after you hit the island.
We can arrange the pick up at Denpensar Airport and drive you the 1 1/2 hours to Villa Agung where your smiling staff will greet you warmly and show you to your rooms.
A ten-minute drive away is a often deserted white sand beach (Pasir Putih) about a half-mile long with lovely swimming and a few warungs serving fresh seafood and cold drinks right on the sand. Massages and crafts are also available.
East Bali may be the last refuge of the true Balinese Culture where festivals, temple ceremonies, and rice farming abound as they have done for centuries. Women in sarongs carrying temple offerings on their heads along bamboo-lined back roads are sights that will linger in one's mind long after you are back home. Many villages in the area are craft-oriented specializing in silver jewelry, weaving, ikat, fishing, and baskets, all ready to be explored.
Many local restaurants abound and both the luxurious Alila Hotel and Aman Kila Hotels are located within 45 minutes and have a number of fine, gourmet restaurants should you want a change of dining pace.
Most of all, Villa Agung offers a chance at renewal, re-invigoration, romance, and recreation in uncommon amounts. Though the journey there may be long, upon arriving only the power of the destination will remain as you have successfully traveled into another world.

The Villa Campuhan is a truly unique experience, far removed from the generic, luxury resort circuit, the Villa is something much more authentic and interesting. Upon arrival you realize that the lovely photos didn't begin to capture the beauty and the scale of the architecture which is perfectly in harmony with the natural setting. Filled with a fascinating collection of artifacts, gorgeous fabrics and massive lounge worthy furnishings the accommodations are gorgeous! Once you get past the beauty and the luxury of the place it is really the people of Villa Campuhan that make the experience such a pleasure. Everyone is welcoming and happy to meet you, by the end of our stay we were truly sad to part from our new Bali friends. The Villa is connected to Jasri village, just outside the gates you can walk past the homes and business of the local people, we even ran into our driver Ketut who invited us for a drink. Walk a little further to the lovely Tirta Gangga Water Palace. Each morning the sound of workers scaring birds from the rice paddies drifts through the windows and villagers wander past to fish or bathe in the river. Meals are also a pleasure. Overseen by manager/chef Penny the food is fresh, delicious and authentically Balinese. A day spent with Penny exploring the local market, followed by a cooking class at her beautiful restaurant, Bali Asli, was a highlight, definitely recommended. Exploring the island is easy, we enjoyed outings with the local driver who had met us at the airport. As well as negotiating the roads he acted as our tour guide so every trip we had a better picture of life in Bali. Our family of four spent a wonderful twelve days staying in the Villa Agung. We loved meeting the people and experiencing the culture of this authentic corner of Bali and hope to return!!

"Honeymoon Paradise!"Guest comment entered by owner
Where do I start in trying to explain the paradise that is Villa Campuhan? We were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon here, staying in Villa agung for nearly two weeks. This is a location like no other! Don't think of this as a typical 5 star hotel (those exist all over the world) - this is something quite different and in our opinion, far far better. It is like a luxurious tree house, on the beach, which comes with its own staff and manager who happily look after your every need. The pictures do not do the place justice, it is even more remarkable and as a huge fan of interesting architecture, I found it to be a design treat. I realise they're just bathrooms, but we couldn't get over the two showers rooms, one of which is open to the ocean, the other with amazing views of the volcano. Tropical bathing can't be beat! The food was delicious, and freshly prepared by the onsite chef. Every meal was a little bit different, but equally as delicious. We enjoyed days lazing by the pool, listening and watching the surf. And some days we spent going on treks and tours organised by the onsite manager. At one point during our holiday we travelled to Ubud and stayed in one of the top rated hotels on Bali and to be honest, we were disappointed, and couldn't wait to get back "home". I couldn't recommend Campuhan highly enough - the only downside was having to leave. If you are thinking of a villa holiday on Bali seriously, look no further...

Villa Agung is just unbelievable.........
The beauty of villa campuhan is so overwhelming I could not believe it. It is even better than in picture! Villa Agung is just unbelievable, we feel so spoilt :-) We had a very nice and relaxing Sunday, resting by the pool after a long and exhausting trip. And starting tomorrow, we are going to explore the area with the help of Penny who is wonderfully nice and warm and charming while being so professional. Her food is amazing and we all look forward to going to the market with her and then take a cooking class. We are all very happy, so thank you!

It's easy to fall in love with Villa Campuhan... The sheer drama of the place is breathtaking but at the same time it's welcoming and intimate. The balance between the stunning architecture, surrounding natural beauty and low key "Luxe" provides the whole property with an abundance of charm and character that is truly unique. All the staff are attentive without being obtrusive and of course the food was amazing! Because of the isolation the food does become a focus so it has to be good, and it is! Dinner was plentiful with the focus on local cuisine and fresh produce all done with Penny's flair and style. Breakfast was delightful taken out on the bench table by the sea. The lunch menu is spot on as well so there's no need to ever leave the place once your there...so we didn't! The masseuses came to the property as did our wonderful Yoga teacher Kawidana. Deciding which hammock to have a snooze in was about the biggest decision that would need to be made. Perusing all the incredible artefacts and art, watching the sunset with the volcano as a backdrop, laying in the huge bath overlooking the sea with the breeze gently wafting through...heaven! We are looking forward to returning soon.

This was probably the best experience of my life! It was truly a paradise; the scenery, the service, the ambiance, the nature...simply breathtaking. I am trying to put the vacation into words, but I don't feel I am doing it justice. It is such a roomy villa, you will feel like royalty here. Everything is so five-star. The facials, the massages, the snorkeling, the sightseeing, the relaxation, the food, the drinks, the bed, the beaches, the culture, everything! It is a visit you must experience for yourself because there is not much more I can say. I am more than satisfied and for sure coming to stay here again. Experience of a lifetime, I guarantee you will enjoy it!

I stayed in Villa Jasi for three weeks and it was pure paradise. Immediately upon arrival I was greeted by the wonderful care takers and house staff who made me feel welcome the moment we landed. The setting of the Villa couldn't have been more picturesque with the ocean directly in front of you and the volcano behind, palm trees and rice paddies in between. This is definitely a wonderful place for romance or to unplug from the world. It is so unbelievably relaxing, everything is taken care of for you, the food and service are excellent, the villa's themselves are truly amazing, and the setting again, is perfect. Once you're completely relaxed and up for adventure they make it so easy to get out and explore. There are great hikes to either the top of the volcano or to the temples on top of one of the other mountains where you will not only be amazed by the views but by the monkeys roaming about in there natural habitat! We also went snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and did some yoga which is all so close to you that if you can get yourself out of the hammock it's totally worth doing. Don't miss the massages either, one hour for something like $10 US could literally be the best money I have ever spent in my life. I can't wait to go back! What a memorable vacation. -Steve

After a long flight from Oakland California, we finally arrived in Bali Indonesia. A driver that the villa had helped arrange greeted us at the airport. After the two-hour drive on the coast, the driver turned off the main road onto a dirt road. I looked at my girlfriend and we shared a moment of “where are we?” After about 10 minutes the car came to stop at this beautiful wall and gate. We were greeted by the villa staff. We were tired and a bit weary of the place, however that all disappeared as soon as we crossed the threshold of the gate. The entrance itself is pure beauty but what waits on the other side is hard to explain. A large expanse of grass with tall palm trees guides yours eyes towards the braking waves just up ahead. The ocean was breath taking. We were taken to our room (we stayed in Villa Jasi). The place is hard to believe. The room was clean and comfortable to say the least. We had a big comfy bed that looked onto a double window. From the window you can see the Honeymoon suite, the Long House, and beyond them the ocean. The three houses on this section of the property are all built around a gorgeous pond filled with life. The room, which is really a freestanding house, has windows on all sides. It’s surrounded by lush vegetation. The construction we were told is very typical of the Sumatran style homes. The house feels private enough but the windows give it a real indoor/outdoor feel. The part that we both loved the most was the shower. It is an open shower and the space is huge. The showerhead rains on you and washes away trace of hectic city life. The room is decorated with classic masks and antiques giving it a great adventurous feel. There are no TV or air conditioning and there is no need for them. The villa has all the luxuries one would want while still having an incredibly unique feel and experience to it. The staff will prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serve it wherever you want to eat it. The menu is extensive and the food is quite good. There is WIFI internet is most areas of the property which means you can relax while still staying in touch. The infinity pool sits next to the ocean and has great views early in the morning. While we were there a new spa was being built but you can ask the staff and they will arrange any spa service you desire to be done at the villa. The best part of Villa Campuhan is the grounds themselves. The houses are something like I’ve never seen before and the magic of the light as i
