Santa Monica house description
This is one cool crib.
The location is north of Montana, north of San Vicente, and on the north side of the street on Adelaide Drive - widely considered to be one of the most desirable streets in the city of Los Angeles/Santa Monica. (some would say THE most desirable. ) A tear-down on this street sold recently for $7.6 million. That's right - a tear-down. Another home sold in the summer of 2011 just shy of $12,000,000.
The street in itself is considered an attraction.
The Santa Monica Stairs are on this street. (If you like a challenging set of stairs to run up and down for your workout - then this location will be your nirvana. There are two sets of stairs in all. Runners do loops.)
You can see the ocean from the front door to the guest quarters or from the guesthouse deck, and a solid view of the Santa Monica Canyon from the bedroom or living room.
A lot of light! Bright and sunny.
Nespresso machine with a variety of cartridges. Complete with espresso cups and saucers.
A library of Blu-Ray and DVD movies.
iTunes based 'jukebox' with 17,000 songs plays thru an NAD receiver and Spendor S3/5se loudspeakers.
The kitchen would be considered a 'kitchenette'. It includes two burners and an oven.
Home was built in 1922-1923. The guest house was added on in the '80's. The guest house occupies the site of the Reyes ranch house, which was believed to be the first building in Santa Monica.
Guest parking is in the driveway. And there is usually street parking.
Adelaide Drive has been home to Charles Laughton, Jean Simmons, Jeff Bridges, composer Ferde GRofe, writer Christopher Isherwood and artist Dan Bachardy. Nutter Randy Quaid and wife Evi once lived in the main house.
Adelaide Drive it is now getting a reputation for being 'writer's row' - the creator of the Simpsons - Matt Groening just moved in, writer of Quiz Show and Donnie Brasco - Paul Attanasio lives in a landmark home. Alvin Sargent, writer of Paper Moon, Ordinary People and many other also calls Adelaide home. And Dale Launer, Ruthless People, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and My Cousin Vinny lives in the main house.
There are architectural landmark homes on this street. And many architectural landmark homes in the neighborhood.
World renowned contemporary architect Frank Gehry (Bilbao, etc.) chose Adelaide Drive to build his own personal dream house. It is under construction now.
In the neighborhood there are number of homes by mid-century architectual icons - Neutra, Saarinen, Lloyd Wright, Harwell Harris...all within walking distance, including a rare home designed by Oscar (Brasilia) Niemeyer. Also iwithin walking distance is the famous Eames Case Study House.
Bus Stop nearby - 100 yards away (7th and San Vicente) from The Big Blue Bus. Check out the routes on their website if you want - it goes all over Santa Monica, and goes into L.A.
The Santa Monica Bluffs are close (walk toward ocean on Adelaide. 15 minute walk (1/2 mile).
Santa Monica Pier. 1.9 miles.
Santa Monica Place/Promenade. Shops, restaurants, three multiple screen movie theaters. DIRECTIONS. 1.4 mile walk. Walk down Adelaide toward Ocean, left on 4th Street, walk 1 mile to Wilshire Blvd. Turn right, walk 1 block and the Santa Monica Promenade starts on the left.
Montana Ave. Restaurants, shops, supermarket, baker, Aero movie theater (American Cinematheque - arthouse cinema, they often have people who wrote, or directed or starred in the movies show up for Q&A).
All short hops on the bus. Or walk and take the bus home.
Great restaurants abound - ** Michelin starred Melisse is a 5 minute drive. So is Rustic Canyon. Giorgio di Baldi is a 2 minute drive. So is The Hungry Cat. Menchies Yogurt, Envy Spa, Pioneer Baker, Pavilion Supermarket, Starbucks are all within walking distance.
Keywords: It is a 3 room (bedroom, living room, bathroom) guest house with a spacious, 270 square foot deck. Separated from the main house by a breezeway, it has it's own entrance and is located above the garage. I've been told this is referred to as 'a carriage house'.

Best of Santa Monica!
Best of Santa Monica!
In town for work for a week, glad I found this place on VRBO. Perfect location! Great apartment and Amazing views of the canyon and ocean. Fitness heaven with the Santa Monica steps and a swim in the ocean every afternoon. Bed was very comfortable. Kitchenette was perfect for breakfast and lunch. Plenty of dinner options within 5 minutes. Pictures were accurate and the property is very well maintained. Dale is welcoming and friendly and was great company for a Brian Wilson/Jeff Beck concert at the Greek theater. (Thanks for the pizza and driving.) I would highly recommend this property and plan on staying there again next year for work.

We spent over two months at this property which is in serious need of updating. Pros: Good location, off street parking, free laundry, great shower, owner is accommodating and provided a new food processor and blender for our stay. Cons: uncomfortable furniture including the bed, dated and tiny kitchen, poor lighting in bathroom, spiders inside and out, no freezer space, late night noise from neighbors and surrounding area more than anticipated

Owner response: Odd. Guests stayed for 2 months and I responded to each and every request. When asked if there was a food processor - I got her one. How about a blender? Got her a blender. Despite closet space adequare for a temporary stay (and tons of cabinet space in the living room) she suggested a chest of drawers would be nice. I immediately went out and got a new chest of drawers (now installed in the closet). When told there was a spider issue I called the exterminator and they addressed the issue that day. (it came after a rain - when spiders often come out). Western Exterminator sprays the perimeter of the property monthly. I live in the main house and I don't have spider issues and I've yet to have any guest before or after this guest complaining about spiders. I had lights for the bathroom which needed installation. I asked her if she wanted them installed, but she didn't want to be bothered with it. (They have since been installed - one on each side of side of the bathroom mirror). The bed was uncomfortable? This was never mentioned to me. Was too firm? (there's a sheet of plywood between the box spring and mattress to firm it up. That could be taken out. But this a difficult issue to address. I have a guest who comes a few times a year that loves that bed! (And she's very picky about beds and linens). Had I known this issue, I would have accommodated her as I had with her every whim. Noisy neighbors? They've moved. (There was high school grad party one night, but the guest didn't mention about this or any other noise issue to me. Ever.) There is an under the counter refrigerator in the kitchen with a tiny freezer, but there is an upright freezer in the garage which they had access to. And they used. A kitchenette by definition is a small kitchen. And is pictured in the ad. In fact, she requested other pics - which I took and sent her. If kitchen size was important, why not take a place with a larger kitchen? I would always ask if everything is okay (which was always answered with a positive response). And any issue large or small - was responded to promptly and pro-actively. In fact she said she enjoyed her time in an email later. To find this negative review posted here is surprising.
Quiet and elegant street; stunning views; huge deck with charcoal BBQ; washer/dryer; parking. We stayed a month for work and pleasure and could not be more pleased. High ceilings and tons of windows make this well-designed loft spacious and bright. Great bedroom with views and night scented flowers in the gardens below. The street is a fitness buff's heaven as it tops the well-used stairs to the ravine below. The host is personable, professional, and responsive. We would stay again in a heartbeat and highly recommend this property for savvy travellers.

I stayed here for 2 months with my daughter this summer. We loved the spot and its easy access to the beach, shopping, restaurants, etc. It is an easy 15 minute commute to Century City/Beverly Hills, but about 20 degrees cooler because of the ocean breeze, so we always looked forward to coming 'home' at night, away from the hustle and bustle of LA. I recommend it for a short or long stay. We had full use of laundry facilities downstairs, and a huge private deck off the living room. I brought my own computer and used the color printer in the unit. It has a kitchenette with 2 burners, small oven, microwave and small (not tiny) refrigerator, so we could make meals, but I wouldn't recommend trying to prepare a Thanksgiving feast. Tons of charm and we would stay here again.

This is a great place to stay, and I highly recommend it. The carriage house in one of the best streets in Santa Monica. I loved the way it was decorated. The Mac Mini had a lot of great music, and we definitely copied some music. Very close to the beach. Really quiet at night. It was everything I was looking for.

I lived in Santa Monica for 13 years and jumped at the chance to stay at this address when I found it on VRBO. It's a great, great location: beautiful homes, close to the beach, some of the best shopping in the LA area, and plenty of good restaurants, including moderate ones that fit our budget. We stayed for 8 nights and loved coming back every evening to this clean, cozy unit. The owner, who lives in the main house, was gracious and very accommodating. He immediately fixed a minor plumbing problem that arose and was prompt in answering all inquiries. And, as can happen only in LA, we were astonished to discover that he has written some of the funniest movies ever, including one of my all time favorite comedies!

What a great pad!!!
What a great pad!!!
I love this place!!! As much as I'd like to write a terrible review so that this cute little spot would be available for me every time I came to town, I'm not going to do that. For someone like me who wants to be on the West side and exercise a bunch, there could not be a better location. The unit is so bright and cheery and has everything you need. The laundry is right downstairs and is hassle free, which is a big plus for me. The owner of the home, Dale, is super nice and helpful. I have already looked at my calendar to see when I can come for my next visit:) Not only would I recommend this property to friends, I already have:)

Santa Monica Oasis
Santa Monica Oasis
My wife, son (5 years old), and I called this property home for the week of Christmas 2011. We LOVED it. The location is one of the best in the area. On Adelaide Drive, it is quiet, has great views from the backyard of the home (best sunset around), and if you want to get some exercise, the famous Santa Monica stairs are just footsteps away. The place was extremely clean with many extras, like a kitchenette, direct tv, computer & internet, and a great collection of books. Did I mentioned the chandelier in the bathroom, wow. Its a great alternative to a hotel, and my family and I will be staying there again.

Unique Guest House in an Exclusive Neighborhood - Location with a capital "L".

The title really says it all. This place is the perfect antidote to most hotels. This spot was perfect for me. I live in the country, so I appreciate city conveniences that I can walk to. The beauty of nature is just outside the door, including Santa Monica Canyon and white water views of Santa Monica Bay. There's a decent breakfast place (Marmalade Cafe) down on Montana Street, a few minutes walk down 7th Street. There are several other good restaurants nearby. When I had questions, the owner was available and proactive - and a nice guy to boot. I spent a comfortable week here while in LA for business. It was my quiet refuge. My only regret was not being able to spend more time here. Highly recommended.
