Franklin cabin description

Visiting Acadia National Park and Downeast Maine puts you in the middle of a widely diverse culture which, when combined with the unique features of our private getaway, permits a once in a lifetime opportunity. For instance, start your day with a vigorous hike through the woods of our eco-diverse forest (first growth pine to later growth hardwoods) then cool off with a swim in the quarry. After a quick lunch, board your Bar Harbor based whale watching vessel. Have a nice meal at a local restaurant and enjoy the evening with live entertainment--choose improv comedy, repertory theater or live music. And don't miss horse-drawn carriage rides in Acadia Park; singing old sea chanties while sailing a four masted schooner; touring Mount Dessert Island on one of Ollie's Trolleys; climbing a mountain; cycling Acadia's trails; kayaking one of the many local 'ponds.' Or relax on our wharf while watching an eagle hunt dinner then enjoy your own fresh caught lobster cooked in the cabin's pot

This was our second time staying at this property and we again had an incredible vacation. This is the perfect place to get away from it all and just enjoy the simple things life can offer. From cooling off in the quarry, to watching the sunset on the wharf and following the lightning bugs back to the cabin - there is plenty to keep you occupied on the property. It is a reasonable drive to the many great attractions of Bar Harbor and Acadia - but also has plenty of amenities and restaurants much closer as well. The cabin itself has everything you'll need for your stay and all linens were clean and stocked upon arrival. Enjoy a night sitting on the front porch and listening to the surroundings - then fall asleep in the sleeping nook to wake up refreshed the next day. The owner, Joasha, is a wonderful individual and will answer any question you may have while you are staying here. Looking forward to returning here again in the future!

If you’re looking for a clean, cozy place in Downeast Maine, this is a great choice. Very clean and well kept up while maintaining a rustic feel. Quiet, comfortable, and ensures a restful vacation. Very close walk to Hog Bay which allowed us to put in our kayaks right on the property and explore the bay. Close-by hiking and lake access in addition to being very close to Acadia and a few other coastal state parks. The owners are very helpful and accountable. Close enough to Ellsworth, which is convenient, but certainly feels like its off the beaten path. We used it as a base while we explored that part of Maine's Downeast coast and the location is perfect for that. Would recommend picking up a Maine gazetteer if you have this in mind. Certainly hope to spend another week here again soon!

Owner response: Thanks for the kind words. It's encouraging to learn we've been successful in what we set out to do--provide a clean, cozy, convenient getaway for those who've waited all year to experience Downeast Maine. And since we're transplants ourselves, we delight in helping others find what they want to see and do in the area. Come back soon!

One of the coziest places I've ever been in -- the cottage (the photos speak for themselves - it's clean, tasteful and comfortable), and also the surroundings. You're enveloped in pines and nature and the sounds of loons and seals -- and that's it. Lots to see and do nearby, too -- but I didn't want to leave my perch by the bay.

Had a wonderful vacation at Loon's Lair. Was just the peaceful experience I was hoping for as an escape from the city. The cottage was clean and well cared for. John and Joasha were gracious hosts and made sure that everything was in place prior to our arrival and also up to snuff during the stay. Idyllic property and convenient to Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert Isle as well. Already looking forward to the next trip North! Thanks Again !!

I've stayed at this charming cottage on several occasions and must say that each time has been magical - as much for the quiet escape from the hectic pace and noise of my city life as for the opportunity to engage in a lot of activity out-of-doors. The cabin is bright, clean, and cozy and tucked away in the woods, but allows for easy access to all that being "Down East" in Maine has to offer: hiking, mountain biking and kayaking in Acadia National Park, playing golf on the sweetest little public course in Sorrento (with incredible views of the ocean!), running or biking along the scenic coastline of Schoodic Point, or taking a hike up Schoodic Mountain and then ending with a swim on the sandy shore of Donnell Pond. There is also a swimming quarry on the property, and at high tide, swimming off the property's point in the salt water of the bay is delightful. I look forward to my next retreat to the cozy cabin in the woods, and highly recommend this special spot in Maine to others looking for the same.
