Darien house description

Our “Red Door Cottage” is located in the quaint historic district of Darien, Georgia. It is a comfortable, pet-friendly 2 bedroom, 1 bath home built in 1906 and lovingly restored with all the modern 20th century conveniences. The home features high ceilings, hardwood floors, central heat and air conditioning as well as ceiling fans in most of the rooms, for those that want that true southern feel. The entire home is showcased with many original works of art, from local artists to the owner's own artwork.

The cozy covered front porch, with a porch swing, opens into the front living area with our original “red door”. This room is the place to relax when there is a chill in the air as it has a gas fireplace, large, comfy sofa and 2 leather chairs. The sofa pulls out to a queen-sized bed and makes a great sleeping area if needed. The room directly adjoining this would have been the formal dining area in 1906, but we have decorated it with a long, comfortable sofa,w/chaise lounge and 32” flat panel TV and it instantly became the family room. The kitchen has a new electric range, new refrigerator, new dishwasher and a lovely large window over the sink that fills the space with light. It is furnished with all the dishes and utensils needed to prepare meals, new toaster oven, microwave and coffee pot. The room adjoining the kitchen is a great place to eat (the table seats 6) and has 2 walls of windows. It has tile floors and is equipped with a gate for the opening, making this the place to put your pooch, should the need arise.
The 2 bedrooms are similar in size but one has a black iron queen-sized bed featuring “Waverly” Southern Magnolia bedding, an antique bureau and mirrored vanity. The other has 2 twin beds, decorated with a bright, whimsical feel. Both rooms have original artwork on the walls.
The black and white tiled bathroom has a tub/shower combination and a modern pedestal sink. The house also has a new clothes washer and dryer.
Out the back door, near the kitchen is a large, new screened porch with a table that seats 6. We're sure this will soon be our favorite hang-out.

Situated on a quiet corner with live oaks and plenty of Spanish moss, we are just 3 blocks from the Darien River Waterfront Park and Boat Dock. Rent or bring your own kayaks, don’t forget your fishing gear, camera, sunscreen and bug spray. Our town is small but features a number of great restaurants, a wine bar, specialty shops and a fantastic art center, all within walking distance of the house.
If its beach you want, St. Simons Island is 20 miles south and Jeykll Island, with the historic Rockefeller village/resort and plenty of surf and sand, is just past that. For an exceptional beach or fishing outing, hire Kelly at the Darien Waterfront Inn to take you by boat (30 minute ride) to Georgia’s best kept secret places.
With Savannah (60 miles north), historic Jekyll Island (22 miles south), old plantations to discover, old Forts to tour, nature trails/tours a call away and tons of delicious, fresh, sweet Georgia shrimp & fish to devour, find time to relax and enjoy Darien.

Once again this vacation rental house in Darien, Georgia exceeded our expectations. We rented this place last year during the summer for two weeks and had such a good time we rented it again this year for three weeks. A bonus this year was the newly added screened in back porch which was nice for our two year old twins to play on without being bothered by the mosquitoes. As I wrote in the post last year this house is located within walking distance to the river where fishing is awesome, historic Darien and several local restaurants that serve fresh local seafood and is very quiet not only at night, but during the day too. I highly recommend this vacation rental property and look forward to returning in the future.

A perfect cottage on a quite street that you can walk to restaurants and shops.Located where as for driving to the different island made the traveling very short but with a lot of this to look at. It has a great screen in porch in back for eating meals or just having morning coffee. Plenty of room for us all with a complete furnished kitchen for cooking.I will differently stay at the Red Door Cottage again and would highly recommend it for anyone.

The moment you walk in the front door of Red Door Cottage, you feel right at home. The warmth, charm, and comfort of this tastefully appointed home are palpable! I loved my week long stay here and will definitely return. The screen porch is the perfect place for morning coffee/breakfast. Evening cocktails/dinner. All the time looking out on the landscaped garden and beautiful "yard art". Another plus for me was the fenced in yard for my pup to run around safely. The kitchen is bright and inviting (including all the ameneties), attached to a glass enclosed eating area that is perfect any time of the day! The bedrooms are beautifully appointed with color, local art and local "feel". My bed was sumptuous!! Only 20 -25 minutes away to St.Simons and Jekyll Island. 60 minutes to Savannah. Moments away from countless wildlife reserves, river kayaking and biking paths. An area brimming with history. Yet, I found that Darien offered several good restaurants, a local artists center(wonderfully talented artists), gourmet shop with attached wine bar and lovely, quiet streets to walk among Spanish moss covered trees and gorgeous azaleas. The nearby river provided abundant wildlife to view and a great place for fishing. Not to mention a lovely, coastal breeze! Yet I always looked forward to returning to RD Cottage to relax. Each time trying a different room as they all have their own personality yet always with comfort and style in mind! Truly a gem not to be missed! "There's no place like Red Door Cottage"!

Thank you for providing such a wonderful rental home for my family and I during our two week stay in Darien. The home was very comfortable and a perfect fit for my family of six and very close to the Historic District and Darien waterfront. I was pleasantly surprised with the how clean and organized the home was when we arrived. There were several brochures on the counter which displayed what the Low Country had to offer as well as several menus to local restaurants, which we really enjoyed. We are looking forward to renting the home again this summer.

With my hectic, high pace life in Indiana, I needed a peaceful getaway. Darien was the perfect choice. Close to the ocean, yet if I just wanted to watch the shrimp boats bring in their catch for the day I could. The Purple Pickle was just the place to enjoy that sweet Georgia shrimp! Excellent service and I enjoyed the local artists work on display. And yes, I bought a memorable piece of the beautiful Georgia Coast. I loved the cozy Red Door Cottage, it is charming! I was impressed on how the owner captured an old feel to the cottage, yet it still had the modern necessities - washer, dryer, and dishwasher. I needed a relaxing getaway and I found it at the Red Door Cottage in Darien, Coastal Georgia.

                          Year Purchased: 2011

About: I am an artist and work in an art gallery on Cape Cod. My husband is a Civil Engineer and works for an environmental consulting company. We live in an old home (circa 1850) in the oldest town on the Cape. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, & chickens. We have a vegetable garden, enjoy canning (& eating!) our veggies, kayaking, touring historic towns & houses and traveling.

                          Why Darien:
We discovered Darien on our usual trip South to Florida. We fell in love with the historic town, the area and the warm, southern hospitality of the town's folk that welcomed us like family. Not nearly as crowded as Florida (or as pricey), Coastal Georgia has so much more to offer than just beach. We love New England, but hope to make Georgia our permanent winter home some day
