The oceanfront charm of Moonrise Cottage offers an unforgettable island experience. At Moonrise Cottage your Kauai vacation won’t be compromised by budget constraints... it's one of Kauai's best bargains! Many of our Moonrise guests are newlyweds enjoying the intimate, cozy atmosphere of this sweet vintage retreat for their honeymoon.
Tucked away for privacy, you approach the cottage from the ocean, along a secluded path lined with palms, ferns and lilies. Even though the ocean view is somewhat obscured by foliage the warm ocean water is only 60 steps from your door, the sandy beach just 3 houses to the north. You can enjoy the every changing panoramic ocean view from the Adirondack chairs on the front lawn as you sip morning coffee or a cool afternoon drink. In winter months you will probably spot whales offshore.
Or wander down to wiggle your toes in the warm sand of "Baby Beach," so called because of the shallow lagoon formed by a small inner reef. A meander down the beach at sunrise can reward you with shells and beach glass and to watch the full moon rise from the ocean at sunset is nothing short of spectacular.
We scoured the island for just the right blend of wicker, bamboo and tropical print fabrics to give Moonrise Cottage the charm and comfort of a vintage Hawaiian beach house. The piece de resistance is a magnificent queen-size bamboo canopy bed, complete with mosquito netting for ambience (rarely do we get mosquitoes). The raised ceiling and ceiling fans add to the open, tropical feeling. The mornings here are heavenly, so quiet you can hear the songs of tropical birds and wind in the palm trees.
Moonrise Cottage is centrally located just a half mile south of the quaint town of Kapaa, with convenient access to the island's many attractions. The NEW seaside walking path encourages strolls into town for shopping or dining and beyond to beaches and the beautiful coastline.

Charming and Romantic Oceanfront Cottage on a Budget
Year Purchased: 1998
Why the Owner Chose Kapaa
We visited Kauai for the first time in 1996, absolutely loved it, and upon leaving fantasized about living there, if just for a short time. But unlike so many fantasies, this one came true. We rented Sunrise Cottage (#53371) for 18 months and ultimately purchased the property, soon adding Moonrise Cottage as a second rental. The experience of being right on the ocean is like no other, we love watching the weather cross the sky, the colors and moods of the ocean change. The property is within walking distance of charming little Kapaa Town and central to all the many wonderful things to do and see on the island.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
The front lawn of Moonrise Cottage is situated to enjoy the spectacular sun and moon rises over the ocean, which are unforgettable. We use the new seaside walking/biking path almost every day to walk into town, to Kealia Beach or just for some exercise. The three mile drive to Sleeping Giant Mountain trailhead is one of our regular expeditions, giving great cardio exercise and amazing views of the entire eastern shoreline of the island. Our sweet little neighborhood is quiet and tucked away, we love listening to the birds in the mornings from the bamboo canopy bed.

We arrived on Thanksgiving Day. It was great to be in a neighborhood and did not feel touristy. The cottage is very cute and cozy. It has everything you need. The bed was super comfortable and we loved listening to the ocean, birds and palm trees blowing in the wind. The kitchen has everything you need and there is a huge barbeque available as well. The cottage was very clean and we did not see any bugs!!! There is a big house on the property that you can also rent, but we had plenty of privacy even when folks were renting it. We were able to walk to Kapaa, which was very nice. We went to the local Safeway and stocked up on food, very convenient access to everything. It was great being in the middle of the island so exploring was easy. If there is a downside, it is that there is not a washer and dryer, but we just hung clothes on the line outside. It was not necessary for us. I would recommend this cottage for a couple. We would stay at Moonrise again. If you want a touristy place with a fancy pool, etc.. then I'd stay at a resort. If you want a cozy place with privacy, this is the place.
Owner response:Aloha Kat and Mike, Mahalo for your wonderful review... you covered every detail that makes Moonrise Cottage such a desirable accommodation. We hope you'll contact us for your next visit to our beautiful Garden Island. Aloha, Susan

We loved the idea of of a cottage on the beach in paradise. This cottage is cozy but very small and lacks spaces to store clothing. The location is central which makes the location great for travel to all areas of the island. We thought we would have 60 steps to the beach but note there is a road between the the property and the water. Also, there is not a beach right there but a sea wall. The beach is a ways down the street. While we were there the cable TV gave is problems and the grill was not operational There is a barking dog in a residence behind the cottage so be aware of that. Overall, the location was central and owners were nice people. Kauai is a great place and this is a good base camp to venture out from.
Owner response:We consider each and every one of our visitors with very high regard and always strive to make their visits to Aloha Cottages as ideal as possible. We were dismayed that these guests did not contact us as to some of the issues they were experiencing. We were waiting for a new auto ignitor for the BBQ but had provided a manual one inside the BBQ cabinet, maybe they missed that. The large, gas, stainless steel BBQ has been working very well. We were unaware of the TV problem and wish they had asked... it turns out it was a cable company issue and when we called it was fixed in a matter of hours. Our neighbors are very considerate, although sometimes their dog does bark for very short intervals it is usually muffled from inside their house, on rare occasions. There is a large closet at the rear of the cottage with 6 linear feet of storage, both hanging rods and shelving. There are so many other attributes of Moonrise Cottage, we hope, overall, their visit was pleasant and they enjoyed the beauty of our magnificent island.

My husband and I loved this little cottage, it was perfect for the 2 of us! It was the perfect home base. We would eat breakfast at the cottage, then be out and about for the entire day,and return to this little piece of paradise to get ready for dinner out or relax with a cool drink, and unwind from the day listening to the ocean waves and feeling the unending breezes off the pacific. We bbq'd 1 night at the cottage and this was great. The bed was very comfy, The entire property was very well maintained,We met the gardener and he was very friendly, even cracked open 2 coconuts for us to try! These little touches are what makes a holiday so memorable! Kapa'a is a great little town with so many choices for eating out and wonderful shops to browse in....I cannot name my favorite! We recommend Jack Harter Helicopters for a stunning view of this island. We loved Tunnels beach for snorkelling, The Beach Hut just near the coasters bike rentals in Kapa'a had all the gear we needed to rent for snorkelling. Be ready to climb and hike and you will be rewarded with some amazing private beaches to laze on! The large cottage is excellent. This would be a great place to rent the entire property for a family or group. We were lucky that no one rented the large cottage the week we were there......it could be a bit too cozy in certain respects, but if you want somewhere for a base to explore and don't care if another family is in the adjacent cottage then this is a perfect place to be! Highly recommended!
Owner response:Thank you, Cathy, for your thoughtful review of Moonrise Cottage. Very nice to read about the welcome you received from the gardener, too. We are addicted to the fresh coconut water ourselves, eagerly awaiting a new bunch to ripen for harvest. Thank you for mentioning the larger Sunrise Cottage. In the last 13 years with Aloha Cottages we've found the two cottages work well together for larger groups and separately they give space and privacy to both occupants. We hope to welcome you back again, soon. Aloha

We just got back from an 10 day stay at The Moonrise Cottage celebrating our honeymoon! What a perfect little place for 2 people looking to relax in the true Kauai experience away from tourists and resorts. We absolutely loved the cottage! Although a bit smaller than we originally thought, the place quickly grew on us. The kitchen is equip with absolutely everything you would need, I think we used that blender every evening making pina coladas! There is a lovely little yard which we enjoyed evenings outside cooking on the grill. Baby Beach is just a few feet away and was great for swimming and catching the local vibe. Everyone is truly so welcoming and nice, we had made some great friends along the way. We didn't spend a ton of time at the cottage because we were so busy exploring. Being out and about during the days made coming home to this quiet cottage that much more rewarding. The location to everything on the island is perfect and there is just so much to do in Kapaa that you will be glad knowing you made the right decision. The bike path near by was an added little bonus, we could walk into town and grab dinner or drinks. We cannot wait to return to Kauai someday and would love a return stay at the Moonrise.
Owner response:It always warms our hearts to hear how much our visitors enjoy Moonrise Cottage and we agree, it's quiet romantic coziness is perfect for honeymooners! And, it sounds like you took full advantage of the location too, with the new seaside path, the beach and nearby Kapaa... how fun! We hope to welcome you back soon. Susan

WOW, we just got back from a week at Moonrise and loved it. The place was clean and cozy. The location was in the perfect spot, in the middle of the island. The access to all the beach gear and toys was such an added bonus. We rented bikes for the week, and loved riding the bike trail at night. Absolutely loved the hikes, snorkeling, and boogie boarding. Really just a beautiful Island! SO much to do and not enough time to see it all. We will be back, we will recommend both Moonrise and Sunrise to anyone who will listen. Thank you so much for sharing your slice of heaven with us. We will keep it in our hearts. Mohalo!!!! Steve & Melody
Owner response:Aloha Melody and Steve, Your enthusiasm for our little Moonrise Cottage and beautiful island comes through in your review. We make every effort to provide a fun, comfortable retreat for our visitors, allowing them to make the most of their holiday time. The amenities you mentioned plus our central location on the new bike trail help to keep bringing visitors back, year after year. We appreciate your recommendations, helping more people enjoy our "slice of heaven." It truly is! Susan

We stayed in the cottage 3 years ago and it was fabulous. Very tiny, but that was fine for us. You can mix a pina colada from your bed. We thought it was great. Planning another trip back, but now we have a baby, so we've outgrown it. Otherwise we'd stay again.

My husband and I stayed in this very comfy cottage for a little over two weeks during our honeymoon. The pictures are an exact description of the cottage. The location is perfect.....right next to the water and on the east side of the island, which is basically "in the middle" of everything you would need. Only steps away from baby beach, which is a very calm beach to lay out at and read a book or splash around in a very non-intimidating stretch of beach. There are plenty of amenities available (boogie boards, kayaks, bikes, beach chairs, etc.) that helped cut down on the rental costs. We had such a wonderful time exploring Kauai and the cottage was the perfect place to come home to at the end of the day. Thank you so much to Susan and Charlie (the owners) for sharing your wonderful cottage with us! We had an AMAZING experience!
Owner response:Aloha Lindsay, It was a pleasure to have you and Ryan here at Aloha Cottages. It seemed that you were enjoying every minute at Moonrise Cottage, when you weren't out exploring the island or making use of all the beach "toys". A honeymoon is a very special time and we are thrilled that Moonrise Cottage could contribute to all your wonderful memories. Warm regards, Susan

We loved the cottage. It was small but was exactly as you had described it. Pictures on the internet could not match it's appeal and beauty. It was a perfect location for walking into town and to the beach. All the extra's provided like the boogie boards, beach chairs and towels made it feel like home. Nothing can compare to sitting on the front lawn and seeing a shooting star. Baby beach was a treat as was the walking trail. We took many of your recommendations for restaurants and attractions and were very pleased. We hope to visit again soon.

What a great location and studio! Full kitchen was perfect! My wife and I went to farmers markets around the island 5 of 7 days, and great to come "home" to the moonrise cottage. Used the outdoor grill, kayaks, & beach equipment. What a great place!!!
