When the tide is out there are miles of tide flats on which to make sand castles or clam. And one of the features which sets this cottage apart is a delightful gated, wooden foot bridge that leads to a privately owned spit where you can find your own driftwood log to sit on and gaze at sunsets, sometimes peaceful in pastel blue and yellow or raucous in vivid color splashed across the sky.
Lora's Cottage inspires comments like 'That cottage is sooo cute! as walkers stroll past the white picket fence. A short walk north on Birch Bay Drive takes you to Shores, Tradewinds Cafe, and CJ's Restaurants, more restaurants & golf. Or how about just relaxing on your own old-fashioned covered sitting porch at the cottage with lemonade or iced tea? Or grind your own coffee beans for that perfect cup. Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Shortly after our youngest graduated high school, we purchased Lora's Cottage and began renovating it. One cold night, we ventured out from our home just north of Seattle to Birch Bay to start work. That was one of the coldest nights we ever spent, sleeping on a mattress we hauled in our pick up truck! We found the cottage had no insulation and the heat was inadequate for that cold October night! We thought we'd be six weeks renovating, couldln't claim youth and ignorance; ever since that night, we learned the cottage would tell us what it needed next. I could not and should not go into all the details, suffice is to say, we've owned a few properties and know how to manage them.
Why the Owner Chose Birch Bay: We were attracted to Lora's Cottage because it is one house from the beach and also includes shared private beach rights to an undeveloped portion of the spit at the mouth of Terrill Creek. One of the features we truly enjoy about this property and Seashell Cottage (across the lane from Lora's) is that there is no railroad track to cross. This type of beach property is not common in Washington State. So it's very easy to get to the beach and that was very important to us. It's away from the hustle and bustle of urban living and yet has a wonderful year 'round holiday good times flavor. Also we were drawn by the low bank beach, no hills or berms or bluffs to hike down. The cottage itself held so much charm and we knew it had a lot of potential because of that before we renovated. It is really fun to go crabbing in August. We catch a lot of crab and one of the things we enjoy is sharing it with others and upon many occasions are able to share with our rental guests. The non-stop water views of the entire area, whether Birch Bay, Blaine or Semiahmoo were a tremendous attraction to us as well as the great diversity of the area.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: It is so lovely to sit on the front porch, we really enjoy having drinks with either friends or family and watch the sunset over the water, feel the gentle breeze from the west. We were attracted, too, by how easy it is to just walk over to the beach whenever we feel like it, maybe to watch eagles or watch a spectacular sunset. Our daughter loves the 'C' Shop and we are anticipating her children enjoying it too and having memories of goodies planted in their heads in just a few years when they're old enough. The cottage is a little dollhouse and was so much fun to decorate.
