Location: Kawela, North Oahu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Between Sunset Beach & Turtle Bay)

Accommodations:  Home, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)

Gated oceanside community, North Shore Oahu. Half acre lot -- lawn, fruit trees, and flowers. Fabulous swimming bay is one minute's walk East by footpath; ocean beach is a minute's walk West. The house is well off Kam Highway, thus QUIET! We invite you to experience renewal in your lives by staying a while in this extraordinarily beautiful and peaceful Old Hawaii setting on the North Shore of Oahu.

The house is an old plantation cottage (1200 sq. ft. plus porches) and was completely remodeled and updated in 1999, repainted in 2004, new top-of-line King and Queen beds and stainless steel BBQ in 2005. Old style but ALL NEW EVERYTHING - electrical, plumbing, doors, windows, floor coverings, walls, siding, covered porches (one screened, one open), paint, appliances, fixtures, furniture, ceiling fans, and furnishings. And we maintain it in great shape!

Oahu's North Shore is much less condo and commercialized than Maui or Kona, let alone Waikiki. It is as gorgeous and laid back as anywhere in the islands. It is quiet, except during Winter weekends when the World Surfing Championships and bring big wave surfers and their fans. Even then, Kawela Bay is quiet, despite the prized but little known surf breaks just outside its entrance. Hale'iwa is a fun town. The Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie is nearby. All Oahu is a local phone call. Nothing on the island is far away.

Kawela Bay is a wonderful sheltered swimming beach, home to dozens of giant turtles, from which only a few houses are in view; through 270 degrees one sees just sand meeting trees or water meeting sky. Often one walks the entire sandy crescent--or all the way to Turtle Bay--without seeing another person. The ocean beaches outside the bay offer a different scene with crashing waves. Watch the surfers at Sunset Beach. Or drive to Kailua for beginner and intermediate windsurfing.

    • We just loved our stay in this beautifully decorated but simple home. Dave gave us great directions for the secluded address which had a private path to a coconut fringed bay where we swam each day with the green turtles. Everything that we needed was there and we found the house a very peaceful place to stay. Whilst Dave provided us with lots of great suggestions for shops, restaurants and tourist attractions we mostly were very happy to shop at the local markets and play Scrabble! We did check out the nearby Turtle Bay resort which whilst beautiful was not a patch on our accomodation. We were very sorry when we had to leave and will hope to return one day. Mahalo!

    • This Kawela Bay house is the perfect place to stay in Hawaii. I grew up in Hawaii, and have rented many vacation properties on various islands - this is the best. We have rented other Kawela Bay and North Shore beachfront homes, and this was better quality, more comfortable, spotlessly clean, and less expensive. The house is very well architected and obviously carefully maintained and loved by its owner.

    • We never imagined how beautiful your home would be! We cannot thank you enough for allowing us to stay in your piece of heaven! This was "hands down" one of the best and most relaxing vacations that we have had as a family. No one wanted to leave...............sigh............ We found a wonderful beach on which to swim and boogie board. We only wish we had found it earlier in the week. The swells were huge and I couldn't drag my family out of the water. It's Kokololio Beach Park. We spent two days there and pretty much had the beach to ourselves! There were very few people and the weather and beach conditions were superb. I loved that there were trees overhanging the beach area, giving the perfect mix of sun and shade options.

I hope that you decide to keep your home available for rentals, as my family has decided that they'd like to make an annual trip to Pali-Hai. Please keep us in mind and in touch! As owners of a second home property, we understand what it is like to allow others to use your home. We hope that you get good feedback from your housekeeper about us. We met her as we were leaving - she gave my daughter a gardenia - what a lovely person.

    • pali-hai is a phenomenal place--incredibly relaxing! we swam with turtles every day and made smoothies every night with fruit from the stands within walking distance of the house. often we were the only people on the secluded beach. we were using public transportation on the island so the bus stop right outside the gate was perfect. the home is beautiful: clean, quiet, and well-equipped.

Our stay was great! Your house is amazing, I can understand why you're so protective of it. I think we left it practically as clean as it was when we got there. The grounds were so lush, the landscaping beautiful. Our girls loved running around the lawn during the occasional rainfall. How wonderful for you to own such a property. We can't wait to stay again. Thanks again!

We have just returned from Pali-Hai and want to let you know how very much we enjoyed the comfort of your place! Your taste in decorating is so simple and yet so Hawaiian....and the comfort of the beds, couches and easy chairs made it great too! Each a.m. we all would sit on the back deck sipping coffee, listening to the happy birds, watching little lizards and enjoy our a.m. conversations as well. The yard was wonderful for badminton and croquet after our late afternoon swims.......we actually found it hard to leave your place before noon due to the comfort and pleasures right there! Please know we will highly recommend your hidden villa to our friends!

We really enjoyed our stay at Pali Hai. You have a beautiful house and you keep it well maintained. It's by far the nicest vacation rental that we've ever stayed in.

Old Hawaii in Oahu Bunny and I had ... feared that there was no longer any tropical paradise, thanks to the urban sprawl of Honolulu. Let me tell you we were dead wrong! As we drove north from Oahu, we left the city and its suburbs behind in about 30 minutes, soon surrounded by pineapple plantations. Then, over the horizon, the Pacific Ocean, and we had arrived at the North Shore. And we were in "Old Hawaii.." Our destination, aptly call Pali Hai (the owner's name is Palley), is about 9 miles west of Haleiwa, just east of Turtle Bay on Kawela Bay, where one can swim with giant turtles. A remodeled 3 bedroom plantation home privately situated on about a half acre of coconut palms and tropical shrubs, this Pali Hai has every modern convenience without giving up its old Hawaiian charm. From there we could walk about 100 yards one way to the surf, or walk a short distance to near-private Kawela Bay for sunning and swimming. One of the features we liked most about the house was the outdoor shower for removing the sand : cold and HOT running water! Our trips into the little town of Haleiwa for provisions was too often interrupted by a stop at Ted's Pies. This bakery, located in what looks like a rundown mini mart, is famous for selling the best pies and cheese cakes, whole or by the piece, anywhere on the Island, bar none! Their pies are found in markets throughout Oahu. (One could, and probably should, walk to Teds from Pali Hai, thereby shedding in advance some of the calories, and guilt, resulting from the subsequent overindulgence.) Then there is the Shrimp Truck where one can enjoy (outside, on picnic benches) one of the most delicious shrimp dinners on Oahu. This truck is an old white delivery truck that looks like something recovered and brought back to the U. S. from Iraq after Desert Storm. But inside they perform miracles. I wish we'd had a camera with us because the funniest sight was the limousine we saw parked beside the truck more than once, no doubt some golfers from the PGA Seniors tournament being held at nearby Turtle Bay Resort. If you are longing for the sun, if you like "Old Hawaii," and if you like the idea of having your own private plantation home instead of the usual "hotel type" accommodations at most resorts, "you bedda check this out brudda" as they might say in Hawaii. It's about half the price of most good resorts, too. Aloha!
