Kaikanani ('The Beautiful Sea')

This oceanfront home is named Kaikanani (the beautiful sea) and is located on the water's edge at the historic Kealakekua Bay. The home offers 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with full ocean views from each room. The home will sleep 6 people with 2 king beds and 2 twin beds. The home was renovated after being devastated from the March, 2011 Japan tidal wave.

Kealakekua Bay is a protected marine sanctuary and an excellent place to snorkel, dive and kayak. Access to the ocean is next door at Manini Beach. The Bay is filled with a variety of marine life- tropical fish and beautiful coral. Dolphins and whales (in season) can be seen directly from your lanai! There is exceptional snorkeling right in front of the house.

This historic bay is where Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778, and is also the site of Hiki'au Heiau. The federal park Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, The City of Refuge, is a short drive (3.5m) to the south.

While at Kaikanani, be prepared to relax and experience that laid-back life-style of the Kealakekua Bay/Honaunau area – no high rises or city noise here! Kealakekua Bay's village, Napo'opo'o, remains the sleepy village of yesterday. The only sounds you will hear will be the ocean rolling onto the shore. Hele mai! Come experience Kaikanani – once you do, you will never want to leave.

(Addendum: In January of this year, the Hawaii Department of Parks instituted a temporary moratorium on kayaks, surfboards and other floatation devices in the Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park; swimming and snorkeling are still allowed. Kayaking is still allowed south of the bay. The expectation is that this will be only a temporary ban.)

Very nice place. Quirky layout for second and third bedroom and bath. But location was amazing and the place is very nice place to hang out in.

Our party of 6 people stayed at Kaikanani for 3 days and enjoyed every moment. The setting is remote and undisturbed, yet convenient to points of interest and activities on the West side of the Big Island. Already wish were were back.

We are a family of four and stayed at this lovely rental property for 6 nights. The agent, Sunquest Vacations were extremely helpful. This is a well appointed property that is clean and spacious and has all the comforts of home, even a great coffee maker. All the beds were really comfortable and there were plenty of soft towels in the two bathrooms. The location of the house is so perfect. At night, with the windows open, you fall alseep to the gentle sound of lapping waves, how perfect is that! It was an absolute pleasure to wake each morning to the gorgeous view of the Kealakekua Bay and to sit on the verandah for breakfast while watching the early morning activites on the bay. Just a short stroll away is the beautiful Manini Beach, which has a community garden that the locals lovingly care for. The beach is a great place to access the cystal clear water and snorkel about to see the delights of the underwater world. The neighbours are friendly and you can rent a kayak from them to cross the bay to visit the Captain Cook memorial and snorkel at one of the best local spots. This is a fantastic place to 'chillax', with all the comforts of home. Best of all, you get to enjoy country Hawaiian hospitality and should you wish to explore the area, the Volcanoes National park is a great day trip from here, as is the North part of the island, if you need some excitement, we can recommend the Ziplining with Big Island Eco adventures. Local cafes we enjoyed were Big Jakes Island BBQ for the best smoked ribs and chicken. Paparinis for the best Pizza and Up Country Bakery has great Bagels and other breads/cakes. Down near the Bay you can't go past Lomanas for the local Fish burger. I had the pleasure of swimming with the local swimming group. Best of all, I swam out to the bay to enjoy seeing the local Spinner dolphins, as they took a rest from the open waters, what a previlage. This is a great place to stay for the perfect Big Island holiday. I would definitely come again

We received excellent service with Sunquest Vacations who were so good to help me organise my special health requirements while away from home and helpful with any tour bookings. Kaikanani has been very nicely renovated to make it a very pleasant home away from home. The kitchen, lounge and balcony were very spacious. The kitchen had every little thing one could need which was good as we like to cook our own food. The views over the beautiful kealakekua bay were just beautiful and we sat on the balcony and enjoyed seeing whales and dolphins every morning. The lock up garage was an added bonus. The bedroom was really nicely renovated as well and the bed was very comfortable. Kealakekua bay is such a special place and we would stay there next time as it was just so beautiful and far enough away from the bustling touristy areas to enjoy our quiet little piece of paradise, but not to far to go and see them. The best thing was the fact that we could just jump straight into a kayak and go and paddle with dolphins, or snorkel in the bay and see turtles and beautiful coral first thing in the morning. We will stay at this beautiful home again next time for sure

I've been blessed to have stayed a Kaikanani for a number of years and it's always a healing and wonderful time with family and friends. Mahalo to Sunquest and the owners for all the malama and aloha that was always there and has been so lovingly nurtured since the tsunami. Looking forward to returning.

This house and this Bay are amazing. This was the perfect tropical vacation. The house is comfortable and fresh. The beds are super comfy. Being right on the water without anything to obstruct the view was magical. We loved the sand beach just a few steps down the street. Our kids wanted to play there all day. Kealakekua sunsets are spectacular. Kayaking across the bay with dolphins splashing just feet away is breathtaking. I can't say enough good things about this very special spot. I almost did not write the review in hopes of keeping this house a secret :) It is a super bargain for what you get.
