The Captain's House is located just a short drive from ancient Delphi. It's a spacious 250 sq m, corner, three-story house built in 1850 for one of the shipowners who developed the historic port of Galaxidi into an architectural urban treasure in which you can immerse today. It conforms to the traditional style of rough stone walls with carved stone frames and corners. It was immaculately restored some 10 years ago keeping the traditional architecture and furniture with the discrete addition of modern amenities by a team of talented designers. The floors and ceilings, doors and windows are of old profiled wood in the local style.
It offers breathtaking views of the Parnassus mountains and ski center, of the picturesque port built with ancient fortification stones, the forest, the tiled roofs and the beautiful gardens of the village. Fully air conditioned, with two fireplaces it welcomes you all year round. The small distance of 70 m from the quay guarantees easy access to beaches, restaurants, shopping and very peaceful surroundings.
The UPPER LEVEL, 'averto' in local terms, is a bright, high ceiling, open space living room of 80 sq m with four large windows and two balcony doors on 3 sides that allow unrestrained view of sea, mountains and the village. It was the space in which the shipowners had sails sown and dried. Two stretching rings from that era remain on the east wall.
-It is furnished with a traditional dining table in front of the fireplace, a Murano chandelier, a Venetian mirror, and a simple mixture of traditional and modern furniture and stylish decoration that render it a beautiful living space for up to 15 people.
-Cable television and a sound system to enjoy seated in the comfortable sofas and armchairs
-Two balconies on the east and west side offer open air sitting space with breathtaking view and alternating sunny and shady conditions.
-The NW corner of the upper level is a closed 15 sq m bedroom with 2 windows, an iron frame double bed and closet.
The traditional staircase gives access to a stylish bathroom off the MEZZANINE LEVEL
The MAIN LEVEL of 100 sq m, high ceiling gives access to the street on the W side through the large stone arched door and to the garden and lower level on the S side.
- It comprises two spacious bedrooms with traditional furniture and closets. The bedroom on the SW corner has a traditional fireplace. Each bedroom has a large window with Mediterranean shutters for shade and they are very bright.
-The fully equipped kitchen is partly located under the staircase, it is full of light through the large window that opens to the street. It was located over the cistern collecting rainwater for the dry summers of Galaxidi. A hand pump brought the water to the kitchen. Today high quality water is piped in and contributes to the greening of the town.
-The dining room setting for eight people is very impressively traditionally furnished and very bright with a large window and balcony door.
-A television set is also installed.
The LOWER LEVEL is a designer's dream. It used to accommodate the cistern carved in the rock and a grape press. It was rearranged into a self contained apartment with entrance through the internal yard and independent access to the street. Part of the rock is left visible. Carved stone and marble sinks have been fitted to the lovely kitchen and bathroom
-A lovely bedroom with a large window, three single beds of iron frame and closets is on the left of the entrance.
-The sitting / dining / kitchen room comprises a stone bench, stone arch, fully equipped kitchen, large table for six persons, cable tv and cushy armchairs. The old tap for the cistern drain is still in its original place.
-A huge bathroom with a large open shower in the corner of the rock wall with the carved stone sink and the exquisite decoration inspires one to live in.
-The stable temperature of the rock makes it a very pleasant living space all year round and the modern heating and air-conditioning that was installed at the renovation seems superfluous.
-A television set is installed.
The GARDEN is an oasis between the building and the street constantly photographed by the passers-by.
-It is full of plants: an old olive tree, lemon trees, bitter orange trees, bougainvilleas of this garden and neighboring gardens that climb all the the way to the top of the third floor and a huge variety of flowers such as jasmines, roses, daisies, gazia geraniums and seasonal flowers creating a secluded green space that is in flowers and full of aroma all year round.
-A large natural stone table for 10 people with a stone bench on one side creates an ideal place for dining in the open air and shaded garden. Discrete lighting makes it a dream place for the summer nights.
WiFi is available throughout the house and the garden.
The TOWN of Galaxidi has been a natural port since the ancient times. Walking in the streets you see so many ruins of the ancient walls, houses, tombs that you feel surrounded by the historic past. The hill opposite the town to the south where the windmill stands today was a Neolithic stone cutting site.
In the 19th century the port was flourishing and the rich shipowners were building the beautiful stone houses that you find today and also the sailboats that traveled all over the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Atlantic coast. They brought back European furniture, jewels, china and even cut stone or porcelain powder that served as ballast for the empty returning ships and fine building material for the rich houses. Many of the buildings in the town and the two museums display some fine examples of architecture, marine life, jewelry and furniture of that time.
Today Galaxidi is a protected town and it makes a lovely destination on the north rugged and beautiful coast of the Corinth bay. It has eyesight contact with the magic of Delphi 'the navel of the Earth' and the most important oracle site of Ancient Greece. It is surrounded by turquoise sea, beautiful beaches, imposing mountains, olive groves, orange and almond groves, lovely small villages. You can in a few minutes reach the beach, the forest, the trekking paths to the mountains, the ski center, visit Delphi or scores of other ancient ruins, churches and monasteries, eat in fine taverns and restaurants, sail off to the Corinth gulf, drive along the coast and on the mountains. Your stay in Galaxidi will leave you with many fond memories.
