Coutances cottage description
LES HIRONDELLES (2) is a 19c stone barn lovingly converted into a totally independent, and self contained gite, which has 3 double bedrooms and sleeps 6 persons.
Situated just outside the village of Contrieres in a small hamlet, La Planche Bourdon is just 7km south of Coutances and 1½ hrs from Cherbourg.
Surrounded by small towns and villages and just 10 minutes away from the beautiful beach at Hauteville-sur-Mer with sand as far as you can see in both directions. We are pleased to offer you the very best of Normandy
The countryside is rural, peaceful and quiet, mainly agricultural.. There are small towns and villages dotted around. Nearby towns each with their own wonderful markets, on different days of the week. Not to miss are, Villedieu-les-Poeles on Tuesday, Granville on Saturdays, Coutances on Thursday. These markets overflow with fresh, local grown produce, delicious cheese, wine and so much more.
ACCOMMODATION 3 large bedrooms; central heating system
On arrival enter by the kitchen. A large L shaped kitchen diner; well equipped with all you need to make life easy. The necessary appliances and plenty of pots and pans to compliment your culinary expertise. A large dining table to seat 6 and a complimentary bottle of wine. So, go on! crack it open, relax, unwind and kick start your holiday.
Moving on through to the lounge and passing the down stairs shower room and toilet facility.
The lounge has two large settees, tv, dvd and cd player. Books for reading and board games for the quiet days. So curl up with a glass of wine and a good book or watch a film, the choice is yours. There is a log burner in the lounge. We do hope the weather is good and there is no need to light up, but it is there if you feel the need.
Sliding Patio doors take you from the lounge and onto the patio with BBQ and outside dining table and chairs for six people.
There are three large double rooms one with full sized double bed, one with King size bed, and a third bedroom with two singles. All very comfortable beds, with excellent sprung mattresses to ensure you sleep well. Pretty co-ordinated linen. Ample cupboard and drawer space. The king size bedded room, overlooks the lovely rear garden with huge french style shutter windows. The other two bedrooms overlook the side gite garden with shrubs and flower borders.
There is a good sized family bathroom with full sized bath, shower, toilet and hand basin. (immediately adjacent to the other double bedded room)
We try to keep everything spic and span which means renewing and replacing items where necessary from time to time. Colours may change but the quality and standards do not!
We are very proud of our gardens, and hope you enjoy them too. Wander around as you wish, if there's fruit on the bushes, do help yourself. Raspberries, strawberries, black currents, mirrabelles rhubarb, when they are in season you are welcome.
Down by the pond (no fishing) sit and relax in the evening and watch the sun do down, what a lovely way to end the day!
THINGS TO DO IN NORMANDY
There are so many things to do and to suit all ages, it would be impossible to list them all. But here are just a few...
The Normandy landing beaches are just an hour away. Whether you have family memories to discover or an historic interest you will find poignant reminders of this region’s past around every corner. The D Day landing beaches and museums are alive with memories and memorials. Those beaches that once witnessed the d-day landings are now places of tranquility and fun, with miles and miles of golden sand and blue sea.
Head southwards from LES HIRONDELLES and discover Mont St Michel, a beautiful place and a very worthwhile trip, that will need several house to explore all that it has to offer! Then just an hour away, in the opposite direction, is the historic town of Bayeux with its famous tapestry. From home a ten minute drive will take you to the beautiful sandy beach at Hauteville-sur-Mer. Sand as far as the eye can see. Good old fashioned fun on the beach with none of the candyfloss and fun fair trappings. So many things to see and do!! Zoos, Dior Museum and gardens, shopping precincts, Cathedrals, and beautiful Normandy churches.
There are many beautiful gardens, literally on our doorstep, just waiting for you to discover. Deer and wild boar roam these local forests and can sometimes be seen in early evening feeding at the roadside.
Normandy is a gastronomic delight - where you can start the day with freshly baked bread and croissants, stop for a lunch of Moules Frites in a local bistro and finish your day with a four course French culinary masterpiece because in Normandy, food is an art form.
If you prefer to cook and eat at home then the markets have it all. From cheese to sausages! Kippers to Moulles. These markets are a treat with local cheeses, fresh off the boat seafood, fabulous fruit and vegetables; The Skipper at Hautville plage is open all day for moules, pancakes and omelettes. Au Pirate in Granville has a more varied menu, from sandwiches to moules and king size prawns to steak, all washed down with a glass of beer or wine.

Spacious quiet home
Spacious quiet home
Our family of 5, with 3 teenagers, stayed here for a week in July. After small apartments in noisy & crowded European cities, we all enjoyed the beautiful & quiet countryside in a spacious home. We were able to drive to St Malo, Mont St Michel, Liseux, Normandy D-Day beaches and also the nearby beach for swimming & mussels! Clive was very friendly and even brought over some balls & racquets for our boys.

Excellent spring break in Normandy at Les Hirondelles 2
Excellent spring break in Normandy at Les Hirondelles 2
We had an excellent spring break in Normandy while staying at Les Hirondelles 2. It is located about six kilometers south of Coutances and very quiet at night, but close to shopping, drug stores, etc. The place was very clean and well appointed - it held six without a problem. Clive (the owner) was very helpful and gave us some great travel tips which we used during the week. The gite is very centrally located to all destinations (Caen, D-Day beaches, St. Malo, Mont St. Michel). We were very satified with the gite and recommend it.

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. Thank you too for leaving everything in good order, I certainly makes out job easier! I (Shirley) am sorry I was not around much, I was poorly and talking was difficult. Mind you Clive can usually 'speak' plenty for both of us. The weather was kind to you but it is cooler now. We hope you enjoyed your taste of Normandy and we may see you again somethine, who knows! Happy holidaying Happy travelling, stay safe and enjoy the rest of the summer. Very kind regards Shirley and Clive

About the owner: We are Shirley and Clive retired, and have lived in France for a few years. These days we travel more. Holidays abroad for ourselves and many trips to UK to visit friends and family. We feel the need to do this for the grand children especially (all 13 of them). We still spend a lot of time here in France and sometimes pop by to say hello to the visitors.
Why the Owner Chose Coutances:
It was a sudden desicion to sell up and come to France; one that we have never regretted. We knew what we wanted, a typical French conversion and we found it here in Normandy. A little bit of heaven! It ticked all the boxes and has taken a few years to bring the place alive. But we aren't complaining, we have loved every minute of it.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Being here in France is a totally different way of life. Much slower than that which we left behind in England. But this was an adventure just waiting to happen. Peace and quiet come to mind instantly. Clean air and no polution. Fresh bread hot from the Boulangerie, Croissants and honey. Miles of empty motorway. You can perhaps think that you are the only ones in the country. Lovely clean beaches and quiet country lanes. A garden to sit in and watch the sun go down. What more could we ask for?
