While the views from on the lake were superb, there were some things I would ask about before anyone wants to rent Eagle's Nest, the large cabin at Sportsmen's Lodge, on Moose lake. First, the nights are often very chilly, even in mid-late August or anytime really in northern wisconsin (as they were when we were there, mid Aug 2012)..and often drizzly, yet that is no fault of the resort, what is the fault of the resort is that Eagle's Nest would have been much homier at night if the beautiful fireplace was fixed and actually was usable !!..No real excuse not to fix it especially at the prices charged.. Second, the furniture within is quite old and shabby, so we placed extra covers we brought with on most of the chairs and sofa, and while the kitchen was clean, the rest of the living spaces, bedrooms etc, were not. Third, the place no matter how it is advertised is hardly quiet. To be sure, jet skiers and water skiers are not prevalent as they are on most lakes, but barking dogs from the resort next door and from onsite cabins and people on the lawn from that resort next door can be really annoying. Add to that how many lake residents run their chainsaws much of the day to clear their properties or to ready their firewood supply for the winter, and the days, dawn to dusk, are loud. I don't fault people clearing their property or readying their firewoood supply for the winter, yet the place is quite loud often times. Fourth, if you rent a motor, make sure it works well since this lake is very long, and I nearly got stranded halfway down it, unable to start my motor since these are very old models. Lastly, for those of you who want to fish, be aware that flowages unlike lakes are very difficult to fish being composed of many acres of unfishable shallow muck bottoms surrounded by shorelines of stumpfields where the fish can be found amongst the sunken trees. Again, this isn't the fault of the resort, but if you want to up your fishing percentages, pick a resort on a lake with more defined points, dropoffs and weed beds, since this lake despite the hype is really only for the experts. But concluding, the surroundings, even though the resort is not, when out on the water is quite beautiful, so if you want to pay the price just to see those surroundings, this is the place for you..Recommended for: Sightseeing.
Owner response: We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. While we have no control over the weather, enjoying a fireplace on a cool Wisconsin evening would indeed be cozy. With the great rental season we’ve had this year, we can put the repair of the fireplace on the priority list. Thank you for that suggestion. We will definitely look into your concerns with the furniture and cleanliness. We have very high standards for our cleaning crew and have not found this to be an issue in the past. We will monitor the service carefully and address any issues immediately. We’re so sorry about the noise; it is generally a peaceful neighborhood. We do allow pets at the resort. Sometimes dogs are not as well behaved as we would like them to be. Regarding problems with the motor, we occasionally have mechanical issues. Tom, the on-site manager, assured us that he was very responsive and had it working that afternoon. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. It is our goal to provide a relaxing vacation experience in this beautiful north woods setting. Addressing your concerns will help us to achieve that goal. -Debbie

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful resort. We highly recommended this property. The property was very clean and well-kept. We loved the refinished wood floors. We enjoyed fishing, quiet sunsets, & and relaxing. The owner was helpful when we had questions with a book of area attractions & eating places. The photos and description accurately portray this property. We loved it.Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Dan & Jill, it was so nice to have dear friends staying at the Eagles Nest. I too love the fishing, the peace & quiet, and awesome sunsets over Moose Lake. Ready for another getaway? Give me a call. Debbie Harvey-Frederiksen

The pictures on line really dont't do the Eagles Nest cabin justice. VERY nice, VERY roomy, Very well kept. Our wonderful hostess, Debbie, answered all of our questions regarding the cabin, accommodations, and local restaurants (which by the way are a very short drive from the resort). Debbie was very flexible regarding check in / check out times. All of the guys in our group were very pleased with the accommodations. Didn't hurt that the fishing was great too! We would love to stay at the Resort in the future. We strongly the Sportsmen's Lodge to those considering a trip to this part of the Northwoods.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Bill, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. It was a pleasure to have you. I couldn't agree more about the local restaurants just a short drive (or boat ride) away. The food and company are excellent and the big screen TV's don't hurt either. Please come back soon. Debbie Harvey-Frederiksen

Thanks for making this weekend possible for us. We came with 2 parents, 2 kids and 2 grandparents. We all had separate bedrooms, the kitchen is huge, the living room comfortable and we loved the large dining table and the bar; unfortunately just one bathroom, but we could manage. Very good the internet connection. We loved that we could use the fishing boat on the lake and the kayaks and the canoe. Wisconsin at its most beautiful! Moose Lake has little islands and it is possible to paddle up a stream, see wild rice grow etc. We did not have much luck with the fishing though.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

I would recommend this cabin to anyone who is looking to spend time in Hayward, it is absolutely beautiful and very spacious. It was easy to feel at home in the comfortable cabin that includes satellite TV and wireless internet and all the kitchen utensils you will need. The cabin has access to the lake and a dock also. We loved the time we were able to spend there and we wish it could have been longer!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Tegan, thanks for your review. It was fun to have you and your family staying with us in the Eagles Nest. You are always welcome...hope you can stay longer next time! Debbie

I felt "de-stressed" and relaxed the minute I approached this beautiful setting of tall pine trees and soothing, lapping lake water. The property and homes were immaculately clean and "guest ready". The "lodge"/Eagle's Nest offered roomy comfort and all the amenities we needed to "move in" and enjoy our stay. We marveled at the gorgeous, authentic wood floors throughout. The kitchen was more than well-equipped for our cooking & dining needs. About a dozen of us fit very comfortably in the lodge, with room to flow-over into the other three cottages if needed. Though I didn't boat or fish, I hear Moose Lake is a great fishing lake. I did enjoy walking along the beautiful lake shore, and down the tranquil road. I saw an eagle and lots of other, natural beauty. Last, but certainly not least, Debbie was kind and informative. Her customer service and attention to detail ensured that we made a great decision to stay at The Sportsmen's Lodge on Moose Lake. We are talking about having our family reunion there sometime soon. THANK YOU TO Debbie and Jo for creating such a prize of a place for us to experience!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Holly, thank you for your heartfelt review. I too feel the tranquility as I drive through the woods toward the Eagles Nest. And when I walk in the door, the peace and beauty of our vacation home take my breath away. We are so blessed to have guests like you in our "little corner of paradise". -Debbie

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Sportsmen's! Thanks Debbie and Johan for being such good hosts. Appreciated the attention to detail in the emailed instructions, "Copps Grocery in Phillips, WI (30 miles from the Lodge) is your last chance to get groceries." We stopped; wonderful large store; she wasn't kidding! We were very comfortable in the Eagle's Nest which has a wonderful "polished-up-vintage" vacation ambiance. Loved the feel of the place! The beds were amazingly comfortable and the water tasted great right out of the tap. Good beds and good water a highlight?? For me, yes. Surprisingly, a trip to the Emergency Room in Hayward for a, thankfully, minor problem was another trip highlight. The whole hospital experience was SO different from the long wait and rushed treatment that is the norm around here that even that event became a positive. You can rest assured that if you should need medical treatment, you can get it quickly at Hayward Hospital from a friendly and caring medical staff. Almost forgot… We had a great time Friday night at the International Lumberjack Competition in Hayward! Hope to do this again sometime. Owner response: Dave & Jean, it was great having you stay in our vacation home recently. I'm so glad your medical experience was a positive one; we've had the same experience with the competent and caring health care in our area. I hope that you will be visiting us on Moose Lake again soon! -Debbie

About the owner: My wife Kory and I have spent our entire lives enjoying the northwoods region of Wisconsin.I myself own Solberg Logging and Forest products,While Kory works in sales at a cheese factory. (typical wisconsinites!) After our kids grew up we decided to spend their inheritance(sorry kids) and buy the Eagles Nest and Sportsmens lodge. giving us the ability to share unique property with others.
Why the Owner Chose Hayward:
The Eagles Nest is situated on the west fork of the Chippewa River where it empties into Moose Lake. The house itself is a bit of history in the area, And the hardwood floors throughout the whole house makes this property a real jewel.
Moose Lake is also a musky and walleye factory, spending my whole life fishing,I cant think of another lake in Wisconsin that has the the ability to produce the number of fish Moose Lake can.
