Step back into time and experience what life must have been on a ranch in the 20's. This cottage isn't for everyone, but for those of you who are looking for character, charm, authenticity and a one of a kind experience this may be just right. Built in the 1920's as a bunkhouse for the ranch hands, this one of a kind piece of California history located on the Santa Ynez River. Perfect for a couple seeking romance and privacy or two couples wanting to explore the wine region and the many excellent restaurants. This is a far cry from most rentals. Furnished with antiques, leather chairs, down furniture, ceiling fans, books on every subject, original New Yorker drawings, abstract western oil paintings, and more.... You're a guest in a private home and you will feel the warmth of of another time and place. Don't be surprised if you start the first chapter of that novel you've been putting off for too long.

My wife and I spent a relaxing three days watching birds, hiking through the beautiful woods and pastures and sitting by an inviting fire. The cabin might be rustic, but it is very comfortable and has all the conveniences we wanted. It's perfect for a couple looking for a romantic getaway. The cabin is also filled with fascinating memorabilia and a selection of good books. All in all, one of our favorite vacations in a long time. Thank you, Karl!Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

My husband, I and two little boys, 5 and 9, had a lovely weekend at this adorable cottage! We definitely aim to return with my parents or friends in tow. Beautifully decorated, tucked away facing a river. Loved taking outdoor showers facing the river! The kids loved splashing in the river, catching and releasing little fish (bring a net and bucket) and even found a beaver dam! Karl was a friendly and laid back host. He very generously let us stay until 6 pm on our last day, which makes a weekend in the country with children a far more relaxed and enjoyable affair! It is quiet and remote feeling, but really close to Santa Ynez and surrounding wine country. Well set up for lovely meals and socializing outside or in, and great big living room and fireplace that we want to return to in colder weather. Rustic yet sophisticated in decor, and super comfortable. It truly feels like a home not a rental. Beds and linens are luxurious! Helpful information: The 2 bedrooms are at opposite ends of the L-shaped house. Great for two couples. My husband and I had to split up because the kids didn't want to be alone so far away from us, although if we had stayed longer they may have adjusted. There are two original built in lower bunk beds in the living room that currently serve as window seats, that could cutely handle kids or overflow, which we didn't try. Also, you must walk through the bathroom to get to the main bedroom. There is a door to the veranda from the bedroom, so I escaped and came in through the kitchen once, when a child closed me out! For us, none of these small quirks outweighed the real pleasures of staying here. Our whole family loved it. We will be back for sure!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+, sightseeing.

My wife and I and another couple just recently enjoyed an amazing visit the Santa Ynez area for a wine tasting weekend and had the pleasure of staying at the Riverfront Historic Cabin. Starting at the moment the 4 of us arrived, we were instantly at ease and taken aback by the absolutely amazing natural surroundings in which the Cabin lay. From the fully stocked kitchen (which has all of the basics which made cooking in a breeze) to the colorful decor full of life and character, this quaint abode set the stage for 3 wonderful nights of wine, fires, conversation, music and love under a bright bed of stars. If you're looking for a special spot to rest your busy mind and body, and to get away from it all (literally, the Riverfront Cabin is in the middle of forest, walnut groves and grape vines), then this is the place for you. As a huge bonus, our host Karl made the whole experience an absolute pleasure - thanks again for sharing your home. We'll be back for sure!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Karl's cabin is the perfect place to stay to get the true flavor of the Santa Ynez valley. It's cozy with everything you could possibly need to relax and the grounds are beautiful. We loved the wrap-around porch the best. Listening to all the wildlife in the river was like what most of us have to download in an iphone app. Don't look anywhere else if you are looking for the perfect wine weekend.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with teenagers, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks Danielle, perfect quest. You are welcome anytime.

We had the most fantastic weekend in this absolutely gorgeous cottage. The photos don't do it justice, sitting on the porch overlooking the river and watching the sun go down with a glass of wine is just magical, followed by dinner in the enclosed courtyard which is beyond charming - one could be thousands of miles away. It is totally quiet and peaceful - at the end of a 3 mile private drive yet so close to all the local markets, vineyards and restaurants of Santa Ynez. The bedrooms are charming & cozy with very comfy beds. We played ping pong, sat in the jacuzzi & only used the outside shower. We are coming back later in the year and look forward to curling up in the living room with a roaring fire and a good book . This is a home and not your usual rental - highly recommend it!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Colette. Thank you for your nice review. You left the place so clean that if I didn't have a terrific girlfriend ( and you weren't married ) I would date you! Come back anytime.

Location
Owner info
About the owner: I am a Santa Barbara native with a long history in the Santa Ynez Valley.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Ynez:
This home was slated to be torn down. Thanks to the rental income, it has been resurected, restored and brought back to being part o Santa Ynez Valley history. In todays world this home could never be recreated, largely due to it's proximity to the Santa Ynez River.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The uniqueness of the property is that gives you a feeling that you could be in Spain, Italy or even Argentina. The Santa Ynez Valley is like no other place, so near and yet so far. I enjoy reading, listening to Coltrane, Waller, cooking for friends, exploring the back country and hiking the many trails.
