Puamana bungalow description
Our Puamana home is an idyllic island style one bedroom bungalow, perfect for 1-2 couples or for a small family. Puamana is one of the lovliest places on Maui and our home has one of the best ocean view locations within Puamana, opposite the central lawn area. We are just steps to the beach. Puamana is a unique gated beachfront community one mile from Lahaina, where residents and guests share 28 acres of tropical gardens, almost a mile of beach, 2 surf breaks, 3 swimming pools, and a tennis court. Puamana was the former estate of the manager of the Pioneer Sugar Mill, and the gracious 1920’s historic home is now lovingly maintained as our Clubhouse. You can enjoy the plantation era reception rooms, piano, tiled courtyard, spectacular ocean front swimming pool (unique in the Islands), lending library, and lawns, all with the alluring ambiance of Old Hawaii.
Everyone enjoys walking or riding bikes in Puamana and cars drive slowly so there is little to disturb the tranquility. You can check the surf from our front deck and walk across the grass to the beach. The family friendly Dolphin Pool is just out the back. Every member of the family can be delightfully content here, the surfers, the swimmers, the book readers, the beach goers, the sand castle builders…all without a car, or even shoes!
Our one bedroom, 1 ½ + bathroom, has been recently refurbished and refurnished. The bedroom with ensuite bathroom (shower) has a sliding glass door to the back lanai and a secluded garden area enclosed by ferns and palms. The livingroom has a queen sized sofa bed, and opens via sliding glass door to the lanai and garden also. The main bathroom (shower over tub) opens from the connecting hallway, so privacy may be maintained for 2 couples sharing. The fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar looks out towards the ocean. Smooth pale bamboo floors, simple tropical style furniture, and full air conditioning provide for a comfortable welcoming atmosphere. We provide free wi-fi, plus fax/printer, DVD and cable TV, washer/dryer. Our front deck with ocean view and rear lanai provide for informal outside dining and BBQ area, all surrounded by flowering shrubs and tropical plants.

Great Vacation House!!!
Great Vacation House!!!
The last couple of reviews I read before I went on vacation caused me to be alarmed. I contacted the owner to express my concerns. She told me they had some renters who had been very hard on the house and they were working on fixing the situation. My husband and I and our two sons arrived at the unit and were greeted with the house being very clean and tidy. The house was perfect for our family, It's a small home but very comfortable. We were out most of the time but enjoyed that the unit had air conditioning, a fully stocked kitchen, lots of beach towels, and the wash and dryer. The house is stocked with nice dishes, utensils, towels ect... My favorite thing was to get up in the morning and see the ocean through the kitchen window. The view from their unit is beautiful it is not oceanfront but you can see the water and hear the waves. This house is perfect for a couple or family who are active and want a nice place to stay. It is not fancy but for the price it is a great unit in an incredible setting. Puamana is a beautiful oasis with lovely grounds and tropical plants and flowers. We cant wait to go back.

Misleading on the way they represent this property
Misleading on the way they represent this property
The pictures and the description of this property show the only updated items within the rental. The place was dirty when we entered, we killed cockroaches more than once. The majority of the handles/doorknobs were corroded, the shower in the master bathroom was disgusting. Also the sink in there didn't drain well which became very dirty over time. The other bath tub in the bathroom off the main room didn't drain either which wasn't pleasant. One of the bar stool seats was broken and the shower rod in the master bath was about to come off the wall. The surrounding property was very beautiful and it was nice to be so close to the ocean but for the money this rental leaves much to be desired.

GREAT Beach condo on Maui
GREAT Beach condo on Maui
My husband and I came to Maui for our Babymoon (last trip before baby arrives). We don't like staying at hotels, but instead prefer to stay at vacation rentals since they're so much more like home and we can come and go and do as we please. We also like having more than just one room, so vacation rentals work perfectly. We chose this condo since it was so close to the beach, and well situated on the island. We were so pleased to find out it was even close to the beach than we had thought! The cute little beach community (gated access) has it's own private beach, which was just steps from our front porch. We went down for morning coffee every day and for the sunset every night. The condo provided beach chairs and towels, which was great! The place was clean and had everything we needed. We were even pleased to find it had 2 bathrooms (both with showers)! This was handy after a long, sandy day at the beach! The bed was very big (King) and comfortable, and there was plenty of dresser and closet space. The TV was just a small, old TV, but we turned it on maybe once so it didn't matter. The kitchen had a full stove, fridge, etc...but we didn't do any cooking. Everything worked though and we could've cooked had we wanted. There was a very nice front porch with a swing and patio table, as well as a back porch with some lounge chairs. Everything was very comfortable and we were perfectly happy with it! I would definitely recommend this to anyone and would definitely stay here on return visits. The owner was very helpful all along (with all my questions about location, etc) and gave us some good pointers on Maui in general as well. I wish we were back there now!

Manager response: Hi Castine, Just read your review. Thanks so much for taking the time to post your comments. I'm so glad you enjoyed our place. TV was bought in 2008 or so- maybe that is old?!...It works fine and doesn't dominate the living room space too much, but it is definitely not a state of the art entertainment centre. I guess TV has never been a huge priority for us either when there are sunsets to watch instead! Hope you come back and stay with us again with the baby. The Dolphin Pool is the perfect place to learn to splash and swim. Christine
Place was clean but a little updating wouldn't hurt, we are frequent visitors to Puamana and have stayed at much nicer units for the same price. Lighting in the living room was horrible, some of the windows were inoperable, not really up to the standards of other units we have stayed in. One real plus was the air conditioning in the living room area. If your a first timer you might not notice or care about some of the small issues but as a frequent visitor we spend a little more time in the condo and so those things are more noticeable. Still recommend it over any of the hotels for location, location, location.

Manager response: Dear Dirk, We are so sorry that you were dissatisfied with our home and also that you did not let us know during your stay so we could do something to improve your experience. My sister Janet lives right down the street and is happy to help. To address your complaints: 1. Lighting in the living room: We haven't been aware of this as an issue, but we note your comments and will address them. We could maybe increase the wattage of the bulbs in the overhead ceiling fan light ( which was itself replaced in 2012), or the wall light, and/or add a lamp or two. The overhead light is on a dimmer switch- I assume you had that on full. The house is well shaded by trees- this will affect the intensity of the natural light during the day, but it also makes it naturally cooler which is restful after you have been out in the sun. The interior photos were taken showing the lighting as it is, without flash. 2. Some windows inoperable: We will check and clean/lubricate/fix the window louvres. Despite maintenance, salt encrustation is on going. I like to have a few windows open for the sea breeze, but if you use the air con the windows should of course be kept closed for efficiency of cooling. The maids routinely close the louvres to help keep the house clean and reduce the ingress of salt from the ocean and dust from the land. If no one opens them for a while it is possible they may have become stiff or seized- but we will fix them now and increase the frequency of maintenance of the louvres for the future. 3. General updating...our unit was re floored in light coloured bamboo a few years ago and all new furniture, new appliances and new bathroom vanities were installed. Our unit is regularly repainted, and new linens, towels and kitchen items are added. As stated in our description, the kitchen is tiled, which is probably not very "up to date". Some Puamana homes have been torn down and re built in recent years. Ours has not, so there will certainly be small differences. What we offer is as stated: a clean, well cared for and comfortable home, furnished in a simple tropical style and in a superb location, at a rate which represents excellent value. My sister and I are committed to the long term, and we do not use a manager- we always respond personally to our renters. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope this response indicates that we take your remarks seriously and will act on your suggestions. Mahalo, Christine and Janet Spreiter

Honeymoon at Puamana
Honeymoon at Puamana
My husband and I had a great time on our honeymoon. Staying in Puamana was a great decision as we had access to a beach just a few yards away, pool, and were within walking distance of Lahaina. It was nice to watch the sun set behind Molokai from the beach and then go back to the condo and cook dinner. The kitchen was fully equipped and allowed us to save some money on meals. The place was neat - bedroom, 2 bathrooms, and living room were all great. We had some trouble with the door lock, but the owner responded immediately. One thing I didn't realize from the listing was that the place was attached to neighbors on both sides, but we weren't bothered by any noise other than the surprising sprinklers at 4 in the morning, but we got used to that. I would highly recommend this place to others.

Manager response: Hi Holly, I'm glad you enjoyed your honeymoon at our home and that everything worked out well for you there. Are you coming back for your anniversary?! Christine & Janet PS More information regarding your comment: All units at Puamana are in small rows scattered throughout the extensive 27 acres of gardens. We are in a block of 4 in a row, as are most homes there. Our neighbors are one bedroom units too though, so the vibe is generally very quiet and respectful. There is some garden area between the front decks of our adjacent units, and at the rear the patios and grass areas are separated by wooden fences and tropical plants, so you can sit out and enjoy your space in peace. Not quite our own private acre on Maui but it's still very pleasant indeed - and slightly more affordable!
Just like home, but with a Beach
Just like home, but with a Beach
I had a conference to attend in Kaanapali but we didn't want to stay in the big impersonal hotel where it was taking place. Puamana was the perfect alternative! Quiet, relaxing, and only steps from our own semi-private beach! We grilled every night and ate on the lanai. So nice to be outside in warm air at night, something that rarely happens at home in SF. The 10-minute-ish drive to Kaanapali was easy and definitely worth it to have quiet, non-touristy setting. We had asked the owners for advice on jogging in the area and they were extremely helpful. They live locally and are easy to contact. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Puamana.

129-2 at Puamana was perfect!
129-2 at Puamana was perfect!
We recently returned from a 2 week stay in this unit in Puamana 129-2 and had a perfect vacation! The unit location is great, literally steps across the grass to the ocean where you can surf or be entertained watching . We spent most afternoons at the "ocean" pool (one of 3 pools) and it was amazing. It hangs over the ocean so the noise of the surf is constant, and when the waves are high it evens sprays over onto parts of the deck. It is also a great spot to hang out and be entertained watching the surfers. The unit was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The kitchen is well-equipped, in fact we rarely ate out! We made our own tropical blender drinks for the poolside and preferred barbequing at night. The unit was clean and well-maintained and the photos do accurately reflect the appearance. The owners are both very friendly and hospitable and we were grateful to have the chance to share their piece of island paradise. We would defintely return and we highly recommend this porperty.

The house is in a great location, clean, well stocked and comfortable. We rocked our daughter to sleep everynight from the porch swing, watching the waves and listening to the ocean. We cooked breakfast and ate at the table in the backyard every morning. We spent our days surfing, swimming in the ocean, and our evenings walking into town for dinner.

The location just south of Lahiana (many bike or walk into town) and on west maui couldnt have been more perfect for first timers. We drove the entire island except hana. Perfect. Owner excellent. Property a home away from home. King bed slept like a dream. Kitchen comfortably stocked with excellent pots and pans. Two full bathrooms unexpected plus. Space is simple, warm, and decorated with owners island paintings. A very nice touch. Plenty of fresh linens and those delightfully overstuffed towels. Ah....but the location.....incredible.

About: My sister, Janet, and I share ownership of this home. Janet is an artist in Lahaina. She is living the dream, surfing and painting. Her Maui inspired landscapes are displayed to good effect in our home. Her boys have grown up to be great surfers and creatives and live in California. I have spent a lot of time on Maui over the years. I now live in Scotland and work as a photographer. These days I am also very busy with my young children, encouraging them into a variety of water sports, despite the Scottish climate! We visited Puamana every year to see my parents who spent much of their retirement there, and now to visit Auntie Janet and to enjoy some warm ocean water! Christine and Janet Spreiter
Our parents were original owners of this home, buying it in 1969, when they had the pick of Puamana. It’s low rise, low density charm was obvious even through the dust of construction. They chose our unit for its prime location, so close to the beach and the pool, with a view of the surf...perfect for us kids. They probably did not foresee the impact Puamana would have on the lives and imaginations of their children! We all fell in love with Maui, learned to surf and to enjoy the ocean. It has influenced us all in different ways, but has run a constant thread though our lives. Amazingly, while so much on Maui has changed, all that we remember about Puamana from over 40 years ago remains enchantingly the same today...only the trees are taller! We even have some of the same neighbors (well, like the trees… the same but older!). Our own children have loved learning to swim and surf on the beach opposite our house just as we did. Our parents have both passed on now, but we retain their commitment to Puamana and to providing a comfortable and relaxing home for our renters in this special place.
The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow:
Puamana days are long and happy and filled with the simple pleasures of sand and surf. The sunsets are unrivalled! We enjoy the ocean, so every day starts with an early morning swim, watching the sun rise up over the West Maui Mountains and checking for whales out to sea. Then a paddle out for a morning of surfing Puamana’s glassy mellow waves with my kids (one of the absolute best things in life!). Back for coffee and breakfast of tropical fruit and croissants from the bakery, and then the children will probably want to go to play at the pool of back to the beach. Rest and read on our comfy swing bench after lunch, and then do it all again, or maybe paddle board along the coast a little, checking out the turtles who regularly pop their heads up in the surf break. After a day of easy fun filled beach activity, it’s an added pleasure to walk to the clubhouse for a book from the library, or a cool calming swim in the ocean pool. In Puamana it is easy to enjoy every minute of your precious vacation. Walking through the grounds past the fountain, playing frisbee under the huge spreading mango trees, collecting fallen plumeria flowers off the grass, and watching rainbows form over the West Maui Mountains…it is all a joy. The attractions of nearby Lahaina include restaurants, shops, a movie theatre, art galleries, cafes, museums, surf schools, rental shops for bikes, boards, etc and a picturesque yacht harbor where you will find charter boats for sailing, whale watching, snorkeling, diving and fishing. You can stroll to Lahaina from Puamana along a lovely palm fringed beach most of the way, emerging at the Harbor right in the central part of town. Beyond Lahaina, Maui boasts an abundance of outdoor adventures and amazing places to explore. You will be limited only by your imagination and energy…and your willingness to leave Puamana!
