Rustic Waterfront Cottage with View, Dock & Beach on Harkers Island, NC.
This family cottage has hardwood floors, ocean breezes, a bedroom with double bed, full bath, furnished kitchen, daybeds to sleep a total of 5, a large deck right on the water, private dock and a small beach. We're just a two-minute walk to the Core Sound Heritage Museum and the National Seashore headquarters. We're also next door to a small marina that provides ferry service to Cape Lookout and the barrier islands across Core Sound; the marina also has a boat launch, docks, and fuel.
On the uninhabited barrier islands you can walk for hours along the Atlantic shore, picking up seashells, swimming, bird-watching, fishing and seeing the wild Shackleford Ponies. Back at the cottage you can fish off of our dock, explore the island, or just relax on our deck with gorgeous views of the lighthouse and perfect sunsets. Get fresh local seafood off the boats daily from local fishmongers, cook in our fully furnished kitchen, and enjoy your meal on the deck! The historic town of Beaufort is just 30 minutes away, with dining, shopping and sightseeing, the docks lined with boats from allover the world. Visit the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the civil war era Fort Macon, or the NC Aquarium; charter a deep sea fishing bot to the Gulf Stream, go sunfish sailing around Harkers Island, bring your own boat, or take the ferry to the Cape.
Whatever you do, it will be a wonderful change of pace, and you will love having our simple cottage as your vacation home.

Very private and peaceful place from which to enjoy the tranquility of Harker's Island. The cottage was perfect for us, two adults with two little kids (the kids slept in the bedroom, the adults in the front room with the sound of the sound.) A nice sense of history about the place, you can tell the builders and owners pay attention to detail. Enjoyed the books and seashells in the cabin, and of course the dock and water. The house is a good place to watch wildlife, seems to be directly on the flight path of every bird in the area. Especially enjoyed the pelicans. Every low tide we found hermit crabs and other creatures to examine. It was nice to be able to walk to the Natl Seashore visitor's centre and to Calico Jack's ferry service. We hope to return in 2013!Recommended for: Families with young children.

Rustic accurately describes this property, but it adds tons of charm. When we arrived the home was clean, well stocked with kitchen stuff, everything worked and is styled with an eclectic array of furniture and items from life lived by the sea. I wouldn't change it a bit. The privacy was nice, the views are awesome and the dock accommodated our 17' boat just fine. I would and probably will stay here again. Yes there is room for your boat trailer, and the boat ramp is just up the street.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We had a most delightful/wonderful/awesome time while at the cottage! The place is exactly as advertised! We didn't want to sleep in the bedroom and opted for the twin beds in the front room so we could listen to the water and watch the light from Cape Lookout! The dock was most helpful as we are fisherpeople :) We took several "sunset" cruises from the dock to the lighthouse and were able to put in a full day of fishing offshore. The kitchen was more than adequate for our catch! Just a lovely little place - it felt like we were home! Can't wait to return!!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My first visit to this lovely seaside home was more than 10 years ago, with my then 7 year-old child. We love being right on the water, waking up to have breakfast on the dock and to watch the fish, dolphins, and other sea life. The ferry is right next door and offers transportation to the beaches of the Outer Banks, the Lighthouse, and the Shackleford Islands where we can see wild ponies in their natural environment. This home is simple and comfortable. It has a southern bank of windows offerings views of the sunrise and sunset over the ocean. It's beautiful, and a perfect getaway for a relaxing vacation. Enjoy!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks, Kathy. I enjoy those things too. I slept on the bed right next to the bank of windows and could hear the gentle lap of the little waves all night- very restful!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1964
About the owner: Owners are three brothers, one a bakery owner, another a college professor, and the third a computer programmer, and our sister, an agricultural restorer in Scotland.
Why the Owner Chose Harkers Island:
The house was built by our parents in the 1960s, having found Harkers Island off the beaten path, authentic, and in very beautiful maritime surroundings.
We have vacationed here ever since, with our children growing up with sand, salt and sunshine, and still coming back for more...
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Peaceful, varied marine ecosystems, interesting local history and culture, eating great fresh seafood, spending lots of time on the water and at the beaches, sandbars and lagoons, watching the sun set over the water.
Our typical day: breakfast on the deck overlooking the water, taking the boat to Cape Lookoout or Shackleford, walking, swimming and collecting shells on the beach, getting some fish for dinner, a glass of wine on the deck, watching the lighthouse flash across the waters at night...
