  Home away from home... not your typical vacation rental! My partner and I traveled Hawaii for a month and Mer-land was the best place we stayed. Elizabeth's home is so welcoming, peaceful and private. The garden is amazing... something is always blooming. The house is spacious and ideal for two. It has excellent airflow and lots of natural light. The kitchen is small but well equipped. We made most of our meals there with comfort and ease. The tub and shower was especially wonderful... also ideal for two! Many thanks Elizabeth for sharing your home with us. We would definitely book your place again when we visit the Big Island again!   It has been just about 3 months since I landed at Merland...and I think about it every single day. It was restorative, scenic, relaxing and renewing. And while I know these can be deemed trite sorts of words, i speak from my heart. Merland is the place to go if you are looking for: a romantic retreat. Or a soulful solitary rejuvenation. I was traveling solo and had the opportunity to stay at Merland for two delicious weeks. I am familiar with this side of the Big Island from a previous visit to Kalani. If we could touch magic, then it would be on this side of the Big Island, and I'm NOT kidding. I am not one to get too "woo-woo" but there is something magical on this side of Hawaii, and I have felt it on each visit (total of 3.) Merland is the best of all worlds: walking distance to Kalani and Black Sands Beach. Driving distance to the hot pools...and if you want to just renew and do your own thing...this is it. The space invites meditation, creative flow, and tasty meals. The night sounds are intoxicating as is the sky since there is no light pollution. If you're looking for Starbucks and Target, then you either go to Hilo or stay in Kona. If you're looking for unadulterad beaches, no chain stores, jungle sounds and creatures, then this is the place. If you're looking for magic, healing, and a deeper sense of what this crazy life is all about: look no further. I'm counting the day's til i can return. In the meantime, like a miser, I dole out a daily energetic allowance that i amassed while there...it reminds me that there is more to life than what i have here. I can't wait to go back. Thank you Elizabeth!

  We loved the house and the garden!! It's just like the pictures and descriptions on the website. You can really notice that it's not 'just a rental' but a place that Elizabeth has turned into her own special paradise. Although the beach, rain forest etc. are not that far we were glad to have a car. It is a bit of driving to get to the major BI sights. But if you want to see both the Hilo and Kona side of the island and don't mind driving this is a good home base. The lava flow of the Pu'u O'o just took up again while we were there so we loved it that it took us only 15 minutes to get to the lava viewing area at night. The people in the neighborhood are very helpful and fun - definitely a special place. Mahalo for the wonderful aloha experience!

  I had a wonderful stay at this lovely property. The house is beautiful, clean & w/tasteful island decor. Super comfy bed. LOVED the big tub overlooking the garden & beautiful native ohia forest. Lovely gardens abound with a delightful variety of plantings & fragrant blossoms. Very quiet, private & relaxing. Evenings stargazing & falling asleep to the sound of distant sea & frog song. Mornings enjoying sunshine & coffee on one of the lanais. Yoga/meditation/inspiration comes easy here with the open spaces & altar. Walk to Kehena beach, Kalani Center, SPACE Market, Bus stop, etc. Fun & interesting Community here as well. This house has everything you need for your own personal retreat. I already miss it & will definitely be back. Mahalos Elizabeth!
