Pure Heaven! The pictures on the website don't come close to what the actual experience is at Casa Barba Roja. You wake up every morning to a killer view, birds, iguanas and occasional troops of monkeys. The sunset on the website is what you experience every night! The grill came in very handy as we bought fresh fish at Marteck in Quepos and ate like kings under the stars. If you like Tuna and Snapper, do not go without visiting this little fish store. The pool at the house is awesome! Shirley the concierge is extremely helpful and booked excursions for us with reputable companies. We will absolutely be revisiting this piece of paradise.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are so very pleased that you all enjoyed your stay at the Casa Barba Roja! We hope to see you all again soon!

I would have to rate this house as one of the best in my travels. The description and pictures did not reflect the many highlights of the house. Located in the heart of Manual Antonio, it was close to everything yet it offered the feeling of total seclusion. The property was well maintained, the house well looked after and very clean. Cafe Milagro located just across the street was amazing, Adrienne and Lance made you feel very much at home. Barba Roja Restaurant was at your doorstep and the Tapas Bar located just above you always put a good meal. So many other choices all within walking distance that you never have to eat at the same place twice. The Manual Antonio Beach is about a mile ( downhill ) and is as amazing as it gets. If you don't feel like walking, for 50 cents, you are on the local bus which practically stops at your door. With buses and plenty of taxis you have no need for a Car rental. BTW if you want a massage then be sure to contact Todd. The best there is in Manual Antonio.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you, thank you. It is very hard indeed to let people know just how centrally located this house is. The grocery store plus literally 12 restaurants are within an 8 minute walk of the house! Glad you all enjoyed your stay! Hope to see you again soon.

We have nothing but the highest praise for the quality of this house and its views. Looking into the bay from the infinity pool is simply magical - made even more memorable by the extraordinary wildlife to be seen in the area of the yard (monkeys, iguanas, and toucans - they keep their distance but are wonderful to look at). The house is impeccably clean, very comfortable, quiet, and luxurious. We were very well looked after by Shirley and had no difficulty at all in getting to amazing (and virtually empty) beaches, to local restaurants, and to the national park. All three generations of our family, ages ranging from 4 to 75, had a fabulous time. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and this is a first-rate base from which to see one of its most spectacular regions. The property is also a couple of minutes walk to a restaurant with rather fine food and excellent service. Or one can walk 5 minutes to a decent supermarket. It is also an ideal place from which to go on excursions, like the mangrove swamp and catamaran tours. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hey there, So very glad you enjoyed the view and the house - it is very comfortable and very quiet. And we are so lucky to have Shirley!!

This place was FAN-freaking-TASTIC!!! We just loved it! My family was in desparate need of some time together and away from work/life. This was just the ticket!! We loved the pool and the layout of the house. We spent a lot of quality relaxing time together without being right on top of one another (i.e., the kids didn't really fight at all!). Perfect! The concierge, Shirley, was also so helpful and so nice. And an AMerican ex-pat, so no language barriers. We can't recommend this house enough!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We love the lay-out as well!! Plenty of shade on the upper deck and plenty of sun on the pool deck!! Glad you enjoyed all the outdoor areas!

Wow--we just returned home and still can't believe how amazing it all was. I agree with the reviewers the house is better than the photos. It's just gorgeous--the view is spectacular. The Sunsets are even better in person--PURA VIDA. You really do feel like you are in the jungle with all the visits from the monkeys and iguanas. If the house weren't enough, having Shirley to help answer questions and make recommendations is absolutely fantastic.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.
Owner response: So very glad you all enjoyed your stay at Casa Barba Roja and that you enjoyed the company of our jungle friends!! Shirley really is the best!! Her nature is to try to make every guest have the best possible stay they can! Pura Vida.

We visited with our son on October 1- 6, 2012. Just as others have stated, you don't need a car. The bus takes you to the beach at Manuel Antonio or back the other direction to Quepos for 50 cents each way. We enjoyed the restaurants that were within walking distance, SANCHOs (great fish tacos and guacamole), Cafe Milagro, Barba Roja, and Salsipuedes. There was a delicious Asian restaurant called Restaurante NGO (apparently with delivery) just past the grocery store (Super Josef) but before the school (going toward Quepos). Shirley, the concierge, was so helpful and worked diligently to get a WiFi issue worked out for us in addition to recommendations and explanations. Shirley also booked a guide, Roy, for visiting Manuel Antonio park. Well worth the price. He was so knowledgeable and able to scope out many species we would simply have missed. We went in right at 7 am and were able to see many reptiles, amazing plants and fungi, birds, sloth, bats, crabs and an elaborate foraging by a group of white-faced monkeys, close enough to touch (we didn't, of course). He even had us taste some unusual finds in the forest . . . I won't give that away. As for the house itself, the layout is wonderful with bedrooms on opposite ends, each with an A/C unit. It was refreshing to return to the cool house. Having the pool overlooking a bay was amazing and we spent a lot of time out there. The rear porch/deck is much deeper than it appears in the photos. The bathrooms are both very spacious and there is ample room in both bedrooms for clothes and other items. We didn't use the loft beds but I went up and saw that even though the area is cooled, there is an additional fan up there. Very thoughtful. The kitchen is spacious and has most anything you will need. If you are coming from a dry climate, as we are, you must remember to store things in sealed bags and store many items in the refrigerator for longer life. Laundry service and cleaning every other day is a fantastic. The only warning is this house is not ADA accessible. You need to be able to walk up and down a walkway and manage some stairs to get to the house. Casa Barba Roja is FANTASTIC! I will recommend it to my friends and would stay there again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: So glad you enjoyed your stay!!! We are truly lucky to have Shirley - she is one of a kind! She is the type of person who really cares that the guests are not bothered and are able to enjoy and relax. And that pesky WiFi - we believe lightning may have struck nearby because the router was only about 6 months old. C'est la vie!! Hope we get to see you all again soon!!!

Wow! What a fun time! The ride from San Jose airport was about 2 1/2 hrs. When we arrived at the Casa Barba Roja, Shirley, the concierge met us smiling and provided us with lots of information. She helped to set up our transportation to/from the airport and the 2 tours we requested, the mangrove tour and ziplining/conopy tour. Both of these were amazing and highly recommended. The house was well air conditioned and had lots of living space. The pool was enjoyed by all. We were very lucky to see a variety of wildlife ranging from the iguana who lives in the roof, roosters next door, butterflies, birds, a large iguana which was spotted in a tree on the property, a raccoon and squirel monkeys (the rarest of them all). One afternoon after returning from the Mangrove Tour and experiencing the white faced monkeys sitting on our heads as well as seeing various other animals and having a delicious lunch we were sitting at the pool when all of a sudden the squirrel monkeys started descending from he trees and jumping onto the pool deck and covered patio. There were at least 15 of them. They were so cute and entertaining to watch..the 4 of us laughed so hard at their shenanigans. The bus stop is convienently located and there are plenty of restaurants in walking distance as well as a grocery store and the beach. Great stay!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

After our plane ride & 2 1/2 hour drive, we were very happy to see we picked the Barba Roja house. First, you can't help but focus your eyes on the amazing view from the back patio. We can remember so many times watching the Pacific Ocean and taking in all the natural environment (yes, we did see wild monkeys, sloths, and iguanas). The location is great and close to numerous restaurants, the house looks brand new and luxurious, and the concierge Shirley sets up everything for you. We honestly felt like we had the best place to stay in Manuel Antonio. If we went back to Manuel Antonio, we would not hesitate to choose the Barba Roja house again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had a most enjoyable stay at Casa Barba Roja. The house was spacious with a very large central living room, covered deck & pool area. The house has a great location, and was clean with everything working. I especially enjoyed watching the birds from the deck in the early morning and sitting in the pool watching the sunset. We'll definately come back there again!Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I was there for a couple days with my kids and this has been by far the best choice for a vacation rental that I have made in a while. The house is perfect for a family or a group of 6-8 people. The owner was super acomodating and helped us with everything, from planning tours to getting things for the house. Literaly 1 minute walk away is the Barba Roja restaurant which has the BEST sunset view I have ever seen.... not to mention the best restaurants are within a 5 minute walk. over all AMAZING!! thanks to the Burts and we will be back VERY soon.......Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Just returned home after a fantastic stay at Casa Barba Roja in Manuel Antonio. Our family found it close to everything we wanted to do with easy access to the entire area. The pool, the sunset views, the meals, the activities, and the surrounding jungle were incredible. Constant visits by the white faced monkeys, toucans, titi monkeys, iguanas and all the other wildlife there kept us fascinated for hours. All the tours, ziplining, rafting, horsebackriding, and kayaking, were able to pick us up and drop us off right at Casa Barba Roja. The house's accommodations were more than we could have possibly hoped for. A trip we wil not soon forget! We would definitely encourage everyone to give this getaway a try as we will be back as soon as possible for another stay in Paradise. Thank you so much to the owners of this beautiful house for allowing us the opportunity to stay in your home.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We just came back for a five night vacation at Casa Barba Roja and have to say it was an incredible experience, from the spectacular sunset views to the delightful climate and proximity to everything one would need, this was an opportunity of a lifetime. One that we would like to do again and again. The owner greeted us when we arrived and provided very helpful tips on the best places to eat, adventure tours and even helped set up those we wanted to do. Every one from the canopy zip lines, sea kayaking, snorkeling, jet skis, to just relaxing on the beach was perfect. All of the tours pick you up and bring you back to your front door which was so convenient. We ate at the restaurant often and enjoyed every meal. The accommodation was perfect for us, which included twice weekly maid service and laundry, a real bonus! All in all I would strongly recommend this place for anyone wanting to just relax and take in beautiful sites, sounds and sunsets. We did see a troup of white faced monkeys the second morning we were there and plenty of beautiful birds and while we heard the iguana on the roof, we never saw him. Oh well, more the reason to come back. The fireworks display on New Years Eve was awesome, best seat in the house.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

What an absolute thrill to wake up to a phenomenal view of the ocean just beyond "your own" lovely infinity pool which is surrounded by Costa Rican flora and fauna. What a blessing to lounge by this pool at the end of the day for an incredible sunset finale. How amazing to watch a parade of whitefaced monkeys through a yard that is filled with tropical plants and flowers. My family of four enjoyed relaxing and resting at the beautiful Casa Barba Roja as much as we did riding the waves at Manuel Antonio beach and eating at the nearby resturants (delicious!). We also had a blast experiencing the zipline at the canopy, jetskiing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Many thanks to the owner for her assistance in arranging some of these fun-filled activities!! The location of this perfect getaway seemed perfect. It was private as well as extremely convenient. We will return!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
