We had a great time in this apartment - two adults, two small children (1 and 4). There is no living room, but the space was very adequate, the children still had plenty of room to play. The sleeping area is separated from the kitchen and living space by a door, which means it is quieter for someone resting in the bedrooms. The playground is just across the building, and there's a greengrocer's, as well as Lidl. Of all the places of this sort we have stayed in - and we've stayed in lots around Europe - this was the best equipped ever. It was very nice that Antonio provided things like salt, sugar, olive oil, etc. He also provided the soaps we needed for clothes and the dishwasher - we've always had to buy these in previous places. Antonio is a very helpful host. We totally recommend this apartment and we'll certainly come back, if in Bologna or northern Italy again. It's very easy to get to places. We had lovely food everywhere we went, but the one we liked best is called Trattoria Baraldi, in Via del Pratello, 40. The food was amazing, while traditional, and they actually put some care into their vegetarian dishes, so they were as special as the meat ones. Concerning restaurants, a lot of them do not open for dinner before 19:30. Also, if you're travelling with small children, the Parco Montagnola has a very nice playground, mostly in the shade.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We echo the comments from many other reviewers. Antonio and his family are very gracious hosts. The apartment is very modern and big. Everything is new. Proximity to the train station is very helpful. Parking nearby was easy and cheap. We would choose this location again rather than directly inside the city center if you plan on having a car. Local shops and restaurants are great, especially the Chinese/Thai/Japanese restaurant in the building next door.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The apartment was very comfortable, and nicely located. The walk to the edge of the central old part of town was 5 min. To the train station 10 to 15 min. Easy bus connections if you do not want to walk. We were there for the calendar month of October, so we bought a monthly bus pass, and jumped on and off busses whenever we got tired. Day trips to nearby cities from the train station was easy, and most cities had trains going every hour. The furthest we went was Venice, and it was only 1:20 to the vaparetto stop. The kitchen was very good, but we found that restaurants were so cheap that we only used it for breakfast. The bedrooms were good size, and the beds comfortable. The bathroom was a dream, great sink and shower. Alberto and his parents were a dream to deal with, and were available and helpful when we needed them. We locked ourselves out of the apartment, and Alberto was there soon after we called him. If you are there for the Fiero district; conventions, shows and such, Al Tortellino is right on the edge of it. Go for it.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

If you want a great place to stay in Bologna Al Tortellino is it! It's a beautiful and comfortable apartment with all the amenities of home. Antonio and his family are extremely gracious and thoughtful. Antonio's brother, Andrew and their mother met us at the apartment with Antonio showing up just a few minutes later. They had stocked the kitchen with fresh fruit and juice, bread and jam and Antonio's mother had made a delicious pana cotta! There were even snacks and a bottle of lambrusco waiting on the table. Antonio and Andrew took us on a tour around the block to show us the layout of the neighborhood, bus stops, grocery store, cash machine, restaurants and coffee bars. (If you like Japanese food try Haiku on the next block, it was very good.) The apartment is very close to the train station which was great for us because we took several day trips to Florence, Ravenna and Venice. It was also only about a 10 to 15 minute easy walk into the center of Bologna or a bus was just around the corner. We all loved exploring and shopping in Bologna! We are a family of 5 adults and I have to say the apartment never felt cramped. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds extremely comfortable! I highly recommend Al Tortellino and Antonio's hospitality(he even made our taxi reservations for us on the day we left). Staying in Bologna at Al Tortellino was a wonderful way to end our visit to Italy. Thank you again Antonio!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We spent 12 delightful days in Bologna based in Antonio's great apartment. From our arrival when Anto's father met us at the street entrance and helped move our luggage into the elevator and the apartment, to the warm welcome from both parents, to Antonio's close contact and efforts to make sure we had everything we needed, the visit went flawlessly. Antonio even arranged to make sure we would have a taxi at the door precisely on time for our departure, since we didn't want to have to chance a miscommunication with the taxi company given our inability to speak Italian beyond a few words. The apartment itself was spotless and quite modern, especially for Bologna, a city of old buildings. The location was perfect for our purposes: some days we just explored Bologna on foot, including a cooking class; other days we walked to the train station to explore nearby cities -- Verona, Ravenna and Ferrara -- or were picked up for trips to Parma, Modena and another day to Dozza (a really pleasant surprise, highly recommended and not found in most tour guides). A couple of points maybe not made in other reviews: to walk to the train station, we highly recommend going to via Donato Creti (turn LEFT on Stalingrado to the corner, then left) to Giacomo Matteotti and across that bridge to the station, instead of going over the via Stalingrado since the walk is much nicer and the bridge not nearly as steep. Also, there weren't any Bolognese restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but it was easy to walk over the Staliingrado bridge to the city center for a great variety of wonderful restaurants (we could have taken a bus right on via Stalingrado but didn't bother), and home after dinner by taxi -- all of the drivers were very familiar with "Stalingrado vente" and drove right to the door. If you do eat in the neighborhood, we found Haiku (with as many Chinese food items on the menu as Japanese) at the corner to be very good and our neighborhood favorite. Lidl supermarket, a block away, has all the food supplies you'll need during your stay at very reasonable prices. All in all, we have no hesitation about highly recommending Al Tortellino for your Bologna visit.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

My family was in Italy for 3 weeks and we spent our first week in Bologna in Al Tortellino. Antonio was on vacation when we arrived but his parents greeted us and are lovely people. Antonio's mom had some snacks when we arrived and had stocked the fridge with some essentials and a homemade dessert. The apartment is a nice size and has a washing machine in the bathroom. Dishwasher in the kitchen. We hung our clothes out to dry. The electric went off once when I inadvertently had 2 A/C's running and the washing machine and dishwasher at once. It was easily fixed by going to the box and turning off one of these major appliances until later. We did experience issues with bugs although I wiped down the counters with soap and water. They greeted us each evening upon our return. As Antonio had returned from vacation, he sprayed the apartment for us while we were in Venice on a day trip but we did see some after that. It just meant cleaning the counters before and after using them. The apartment is located about 15 minute walk from the city center. It was really secure. I am glad I was accompanied by my husband and two teenage sons as the streets did appear empty but we always returned later in the evening. We walked everywhere. The train station is close. This apartment is very suitable for day trips as the train station is nearby but more importantly, the speed train stops in Bologna. That is not the case for Ferrara or Ravenna. It was a wise choice as the speed train is punctual whereas the regional trains are not so if you are connecting from another town, you need to arrive early to make sure you don't miss the speed train. August is a very hot month and may be the reasons the bugs (they were small) came in to the air conditioned unit. This was the only issue. Other than this, the apartment is really a nice retreat. It has a safe to keep your passports and money, a nice solid iron door and a really nice neighbor across the hall. Grocery shopping is nearby. We also went when a lot of folks are on vacation. We saw a lot of restaurants and ate well during our stay. The beds are really comfortable and we are REALLY particular about our sleep. It has nice mattresses and the apartment is nicely decorated. I recommend this apartment.Owner response: THANK YOU, BETTY, FOR YOUR GREAT REVIEW! ALL OF US REALLY APPRECIATE IT. ABOUT THE FEW SMALL BUGS, I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT THAT IT WAS THE FIRST EXPERIENCE FOR US TOO (BECAUSE OF THE UNEXPECTED HOT WEATHER): NEXT TIME I WILL KNOW HOW TO MANAGE IT! HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON AGAIN...CIAO ANTONIO

My husband and I spent 2 wonderful weeks at Al Tortellino in late March and early April while visiting our daughter who is studying in Bologna. Antonio's charming parents greeted us at the apartment. After traveling for over 20 hours from the southwestern United States to Bologna we were delighted to find that they had stocked the kitchen for us with fruit, regional snacks and beverages, and even homemade flan! Al Tortellino is a modern, clean and extremely well equipped apartment within easy walking distance to the train station and the center of Bologna which was great for sightseeing. Antonio and his family were very accommodating and we would highly recommend this apartment.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Two girl friends and I stayed in al Tortellino for a week in March, 2012. The apartment was beautiful, clean and nicely arranged with all the amenities of home, and Antonio and his family were extremely gracious and delightful. From the time of booking all the way through our stay, Anto was available to answer questions and generally just be awesome. It was especially nice to have refreshments upon our arrival, as it was rather a grueling journey to get to town! And it was really nice to have a washing machine and stocked kitchen, definitely saved us time and money. In fact every time we wanted something, from a bus map to a wine-stopper to a wire-cutter, we found it in the apartment. They totally anticipated our weird needs. The apartment is extremely convenient to the fair area of Bologna. Less convenient for the city centre, but we figured out the bus and taxi situation easily. Not gonna lie, the neighborhood feels sort of sketchy at night, but there were three of us, so it was fine. I might be uncomfortable in the neighborhood at night if I were by myself. Not that it seems DANGEROUS really... just a bit isolated and nothing much open at night except a pub. I was definitely glad to take taxis home at night and go straight upstairs. The apartment itself feels very secure and home-like. We so appreciated the warmth and hospitality, and definitely hope to rent the apartment again in the future. Grazie Mille!Recommended for: Girls getaway, tourists without a car.
