Bernard cottage description

Cozy, clean, quiet, No Smoking, No Pets, 'broom cleaning by guests' style rental cottage offering 'even better than we expected' comfort on the 'Quietside' (known for dark skies) of Mount Desert Island.
Bobcat Cottage is part of a wooded, privately owned rural/residential 6 acre property called 'Meadowview', which has a conservation easement leading to undeveloped areas of Acadia National Park. Located at the top of a private gravel and dirt road containing homes set back in the trees on 5+ acre lots. The cottage is off the main driveway on the property; nestled in the forest on 3 sides, with a nice tree buffer between the cottage, the neighbor's property and the bi-coastal owner's house (currently being rented by a year-round tenant), located down the drive about 300 feet from Bobcat Cottage.
After crossing through Bobcat's private gravel parking area in front of the cottage, and walking the short gravel path to the front of the cottage, you come upon the porch after climbing a few wooden steps. While staying at the cottage, you might enjoy the long tradition of sitting on the porch in the outdoor-wicker loveseat or chair, drinking your coffee or tea and maybe resting a plate of blueberry muffins on one of the nice little tables, while watching the squirrels through the flowers in the window box on the porch railing and listening to the songbirds greet the day. We have a Mosquito Magnet close by so that you can indeed enjoy both the porch and the picnic table and propane BBQ in front of the porch.
Once you have entered the cottage, you will see that it has a cathedral ceiling with large fan, warm pine interior walls, Pergo-like floors and a large number of windows (with shades) providing light and a lot of ventilation.
If you look to your right, you will see the well equipped kitchen which has cherry wood cabinets, track lighting, plus nice recessed rope lighting with dimmer switch (quite romantic at night), a full size 4 burner stove with oven, a microwave over the stove, refrigerator, large stainless steel sink, coffeemaker, small electric coffee grinder, toaster, blender, tea pot and kettle, cutting boards, chef's knife set and block, various size vegetable and spice/herb choppers, plus inside the cabinets and drawers we have, dishes, glasses, cups, bowls, silverware and knives, etc. for 4+. We also provide salt and pepper shakers, a sugar bowl, butter dish, pitchers for cold beverages and ice cube trays (usually loaded with fresh ice cubes - made by the housekeeper), plus plastic containers for your use while at the cottage. For those mussels and lobsters that some of you may want to cook yourself, we have steamer and lobster pots, tongs, colanders and strainers. We don't leave out the bakers either - we have muffin, cake and pie pans, measuring cups, a small electric hand mixer. We offer a generous supply of dish towels and table linens. There is room for 4 at the wood table and chairs, and an antique cabinet provides extra storage for a number of books, picnic table clothes, various emergency supplies (flashlights, batteries, extra light bulbs, matches, etc.). We also provide indoor trash cans and trash bags for each room, plus a 13 gallon trash can and trash bags (under the kitchen sink), dish soap, basic cleaning supplies, sponge, scrubber and dish pan and dish drainer.
The living room can also be viewed upon entering the cottage, as there is no wall between the kitchen and the living room area. While this area is not large, the tone set by the gas thermostatically controlled black stove/fireplace, older-style color TV (no cable, Free Wi-Fi, so TV is only for DVD's) and the CD/Stereo, many books and games, comfortable loveseat, wicker sofa, high- backed wicker chair with antique standing lamp and another small table, a large Bar Harbor wicker table with nice tall lamp on it, inspires relaxation and family discussions (or so I have been told by our many past guests).
When it is time to retire for the night, there is one bedroom on the main floor with a comfy queen bed with lots of pillows, soft sheets, quilts and extra blankets, coat closet with coat hangers (where the iron & ironing board, extra fans, pillows & blankets are stored), a large dresser and a bedside table (with clock radio), plus 2 matching brass lamps on either side of the bed, and a small wooden chair and stacking tables on which to set 'whatever'. This room also has 2 nice size windows with views of the trees and vinyl shades.
The loft (or the 'laboratory', 'cave', 'tree-house', etc. - as many imaginative little minds have named it) has a partial wall between it and the living room, and is reached via a metal spiral staircase. Beneath the peak of the roof we have 2 twin beds (which adults as well as children seem to find quite comfortable to sleep in), an antique dresser with lamp and mirror, a small hanging bar with coat hangers, a bookcase, a chair and an antique trunk between the beds with another lamp and a CD/Radio. There is a window with shade between the two twin beds, and we have a nice thermostatically controlled window fan that gives you the option to keep air flowing through the cottage while away for the day, when you might not feel comfortable leaving a window open on the main floor.
The cottage bathroom is directly across from the bedroom on the main floor and contains a full tub/shower, with whimsical shower curtain and bathmat for your safety, a window to let in the nice forest air, a pedestal sink with a soap tray and some nice hand/face soap, a small shelf above the sink, a wall-mounted magnifying mirror, toilet paper holder with roll of paper for your convenience, towel racks with lots of soft clean towels, a small shelf unit to hold more towels, wash clothes, cloth bath mats and a blow dryer. Nights can get quite chilly, even in summer so there is a nice rug on the bathroom floor to keep your feet warm. The bathroom also contains the stacking washer and dryer, plus a small amount of 'sensitive' skin laundry soap, a rubber ball to use in the dryer (so you don't have to use softener or dryer sheets), and a bottle of stain remover (unfortunately, not as skin friendly). We also store the beach towels and a laundry basket on top of the W/D.
The hallway between the bedroom and the bathroom is where the BBQ tools are stored and there is also a rack for your coats, hats, etc. This is also where the broom, and small vacuum are kept.
While the cottage is quite a comfy place to be, you might want to take a stroll down the driveway to the night sky viewing area next to the observatory. Please be considerate of the tenant in the main house - sound carries under our wonderful dark skies. You are welcome to bring your own telescope and set up on the nice flat site. The wonderful dark skies on the 'Quiet Side have amazed a lot of city dwellers who have never even seen the Milky Way and given those with binoculars and even small telescopes many hours of viewing enjoyment. There are binoculars for your use in the antique cabinet in the kitchen area.

Located at the end of spectacular Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park. Bobcat Cottage is on the 'Quietside' away from the teeming throngs, cruise liners and tourist shops of Bar Harbor, but just close enough to the excellent restaurants and small established businesses of Southwest Harbor. You are within a short drive to Mount Desert's rocky shores, fabulous sunsets and wonderful hiking trails in the less crowded areas of Acadia National Park.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: Current Status: Linda and Peter Lord are bi-coastal (due to work opportunities in California for Peter - communication satellite engineer). We moved to MDI in 2003 (staying as full-time residents for 10 years). In the first 2 years on our property, we assisted with the building of our house and Bobcat Cottage. We built the observatory and shaped our forested (and very rocky) land. We opened and ran an astronomy store and education center, while offering Bobcat Cottage as a seasonal rental with guests getting tours of the night sky in our observatory. After 2.5 years, it was decided that a larger community could be served by the formation of a non-profit, and we let go of our store (Island Astronomy) but still held the name. Peter became the Director of the non-profit Island Astronomy Institute (IAI), and the Institute expanded its astronomy educational outreach statewide (creating the statewide, Maine Starlight Festival). Linda continued managing the rental of Bobcat Cottage and providing the Institute some admin. support. While on MDI, we loved promoting the enjoyment and preservation of Maine's dark skies and being able to offer our cottage guests a cozy 'home away from home' to come back to after enjoying all that Mount Desert and Maine has to offer. We hope that our management and attention to detail in preparing for each rental season continues to allow us to provide a cozy place for our guests, even if we are not able to be onsite at this point in time.
