Aude villa description
Villa de Moulin is located in the heart of the picturesque Corbieres hills. This is Cathar country offering one of the most inspiring and dramatic landscapes in Europe. The villa overlooks a range of beautiful hills that stretch north of the Spanish border and sweep inland from the Mediterranean.
The villa is one of a small group of cut stone villas built in the traditional style overlooking the pretty village of Durban and its medieval castle. The villa is a 5 minutes walking distance from the village.Enjoying total privacy, this lovely house sleeps 6 adults in 3 bedrooms, each with stunning views over the unspoilt countryside. Complete with private pool and magnificent deck, Villa de Moulin is the perfect location for an idyllic holiday in this still undiscovered yet easily accessible part of Mediterranean France. Beautifully appointed to the highest standards and fully equipped with every modern convenience, this is a perfect home from home, in which to enjoy the unique pace and ambience of Languedoc . We supply everything from bedlinen to towels (including beach towels) to a supply of dishwater tablets and other little bits and pieces. Importantly, each bedroom at Villa de Moulin has separate bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor and lead out on the upper deck which overlooks the pool. The third bedroom is upstairs with its own bathroom and overlooks the stunning Corbieres hills and the chateau of Durban. All bedrooms have lovely fresh linen, beautiful furniture and typically French throws. The bedroom upstairs has a bath, basin and toilet, while the bedrooms downstairs have enclosed showers, basins and toilets each. All bathrooms have original stone finishes and hand crafted tiles.
The pool and garden provide stunning views in every direction. The upper deck is under a wrought iron pergola and has an outdoor table and 8 chairs, perfect for wining and dining. On the lower deck is the barbecue with a built-in kitchen and another smaller table with 4 chairs. Perfect for lazy afternoon sundowners with wonderful views over the valley and vineyars below and the hills of Languedoc across the valley. One of the best things about a holiday here is the scenery and we've made sure that the garden makes the most of it!
Vineyards, ancient monasteries and medieval castles punctuate the landscape whilst the golden beaches of the Mediterranean are just a short drive away. Villa de Moulin is situated in the old village of Durban and its medieval castle. The village is typically French with a cafe, boulangerie, florist and of course the local cave cooperative. It is a perfect location for either an activity packed holiday or a relaxing getaway. During the summer months there are regular dinners hosted by the village in the central square by the river. The whole village comes down and eats on long trestle tables and the food is delicious and authentically French. Everyone in the village is welcome, including visitors and the atmosphere is wonderful.Within a short distance of Durban are the ancient monasteries at Lagrasse and Fontfroide, the medieval castles at Queribus and Peyrepertuse, the historic walled town of Carcassonne and the beautiful Canal de Midi meandering through the countryside. Nearby are the thriving market towns of Narbonne and Beziers providing a wide range of shops and services. The city of Perpignan offers a vibrant mix of influences- more Catalan than French in atmosphere. Each Thursday in July and August Perpignan hosts a music festival. The town is closed off to traffic and visitors walk through the town listening to live music ranging from jazz, to Catalan, to Spanish, to Arabic. The outdoor cafes and restaurants bustle with activity and music is heard everywhere. If classical music is more what you enjoy, the nearby town of Prades has an annual Pablo Cassals classical concert repertoire over the summer.
Swimming and windsurfing are available in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean at Cap Leucate and Le Franqui, just 25minutes away. The beaches are sandy and pristene and all along the beachfronts are lovely restaurants and coffee shops. An hour away is the beautiful coastal town of Collioure where Matisse painted many of his famous works of the lighthouse and little cove. This town was the place where the Fauvisme movement began and the modern art museum there is great for art lovers!
This is an area steeped in history and marked with an almost perfect climate. Enjoying almost 300 days of sunshine annually, the area benefits from long hot summers and brief, mild winters.
In the winter, the snowy peaks of the Pyrennees which rise dramatically in the south offer a range of winter sports activities. Ski resorts such as Les Angles and Font Romeu only a 2 hour drive from the villa. The ski slopes are excellent and cater to all ranges of ability. The towns have wonderful restaurants and shops and many of the villages that one drives through en-route to the ski slopes are famous for their hot thermal springs.
An hour and a half drive away is Barcelona with its beautiful architecture and museums. Most visitors to the area visit Barcelona for the day to buy their beautiful pottery and art.

About: We have a very busy lifestyle when in England. Both my children are in the National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain and so the whole family is very musical. Our fast paced life means that we adore coming out to our beloved holiday home and spending time together to unwind. For us, Villa de Moulin is a home that we love and cherish. It is our retreat that we rush to so as to re-invigorate our spirits and spend with our loved ones and our friends. We love every aspect of the house. Each piece of furniture has been carefully chosen and each item has been placed there with attention to detail. All the paintings on the walls have been painted by myself, often while in France. They all represent our love for the country, for our house and for our life together.
The greatest attraction for us when buying this house, was the dramatic and inspiring landscapes. The area is stunningly beautiful and the landscape is marked with many monasteries and châteaux. It is very private and not bustling with traffic and tourists. The village is typically French with the morning markets and the regular 'Vide Greniers' where one can buy anything from fruit and vegetables, to furniture and paintings done by the local people. Yet big towns such as Narbonne, Perpignan and Carcassonne, with all the amenities are only a short drive away. Each Sunday we hear the churchbells ringing over the valley and all one can hear are the birds and crickets for miles away. There are numerous airports closeby such as Carcassonne airport (at 50 km), Perpignan airport (at 45 km) so the area is very easily accessible. Toulouse airport is further away but also accessible. Many friends and relatives fly into Girona (Spain) and drive to the house which is an hour and a half away. In the summer months the beaches are stunning. The beaches at Le Franqui and Cap Leaucate are sandy with beautiful, romantic restaurants close to the beachfront. All watersports are available on the beaches. In the winter the ski resorts in the Pyrenees are only 2 hours drive away.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
One of our favourite things to do is to walk down to the boulangerie each morning to buy warm croissants. The 5 minute walk takes one across the river to the little high street. There are always little stalls selling fruit vegetables, flowers, and bread along the river. The village is very quaint and the walk never disappoints. In he afternoons we often walk up to the chateau, through the old town. The houses are beautiful and one can always hear music wafting through the streets. The village has tennis courts and there are many children riding their bikes around. We always make the mostof our visits to Durban and emerge ourselves in the experience.
