Georgia house description
The Elderberry Lodge is a perfect home away from home for friends and family to stay while visiting Northern Vermont's Champlain Valley. Just two miles from Interstate 89, Exit 18, we are easily accessible and close to Burlington to the South, St. Alban's to the north, and the Champlain Islands to the west. Our vacation rental is a comfortably renovated and updated family home, with the right amount of privacy and togetherness for your get away.
Three bedrooms, two full and one half baths make sleeping six perfect, with cozy overflow sleeping space for four more guests. Main floor includes formal dining room, kitchen, living room, and family room. Play a board game, work a puzzle, or view movies or basic satellite programing on 40' LCD flat screen TV, with Wii for your games, and a DVD player.
Beautiful views of Arrowhead Mountain Lake make the Elderberry Lodge unforgettable. It's a place you will want to return to year after year.
Gorgeous Views: The Elderberry Lodge sits on the side of a hill, overlooking Vermont State Route 104A, and Arrowhead Mountain Lake. Just two miles from Interstate 89, it's close to civilization, yet it's all by itself with no neighbors in sight. The house is an historic treasure, built in 1917 and renovated by its current owners in 2010. Its most fetching feature is its view. It can be enjoyed from almost all the main floor and here and there from upstairs; a feature every visitor can fully enjoy. The hardwood floors throughout take a close second and have been sanded and refinished. During renovations, an entire new kitchen was installed, and includes changes to the floor plan that create flow and encourage visiting and being together in a comfy homelike atmosphere. The video/game room provides a cozy room to share a favorite movie or game without dominating the scene. The state of the art flat screen TV will mean no roughing it in the viewing department.
Beautiful Wooded Setting: The Elderberry Lodge is on 23.1 wooded acres, so there is no shortage of nature walk options in all seasons. We have seen wild turkey, hawks, orioles, red wing black birds, deer, duck, osprey, to name a few. There have also been lots of wildflower sightings and evidence of other wildlife underfoot. A little stream trickles down the hill just across the way, and wetlands abound at the southwest corner of the property. The front of the house, which is in the back, faces the railroad tracks. When you hear the train coming you may surprise yourself by running to the window to count the cars. I have counted as few as five (Amtrak) and as many as 22 (freight.) The train adds another layer of romantic ambiance to the place.
Arrowhead Mountain Lake: The road to the Elderberry Lodge is right in between the High Bridge and the Vermont State Fishing Access to Arrowhead Mountain Lake. There is a two person canoe with paddles and PDFs that may be captained by qualified adult guests. The lake is about four miles long running north and south, from the Lodge to the Clark Falls Dam in Milton, and is fed by the Lamoille River. The lake is a fabulous paddle kayaks or canoes, with a calm yet wilderness feeling for much of the way. Fisherfolk may be seen on and around the lake all season long, and even sometimes in the dead of winter, landing bass, catfish, and crappie. The Lamoille River offers perch, pike, and the occasional brown trout. Skiing at Smuggler's Notch is a popular downhill option, but cross-country skiing and sledding abound right out the back door.

Beautiful "get away from it all" home
Beautiful "get away from it all" home
I stayed here with a group of family members and hosted a surprise birthday party for my sister who lives nearby. It was a fantastic gathering place--the kitchen is such a joy to use, the beds are super comfy and the layout of the house is perfect for enjoying eachother's company. I had the opportunity to peek at the house 2 years ago when renovations were being done and was so thrilled to see everything finished. There is so much thought put into every detail....honestly, I hated to leave. I would very much recommend this rental to anyone. We have enjoyed Deborah's hospitality in the past at her B&B that is nearby, but it was a special treat to be able to have the whole place to ourselves and hang out together because our group comes from all directions. I look forward to returning in the summer and enjoying the lake and more hiking opportunities. We love to get to Burlington to shop and out to dinner at the Blue Paddle in North Hero--the lodge is perfectly located for picking up the highway and getting to any VT destination. All in all, this was a very enjoyable experience!

We stayed here for two days in early September. What a comfortable, spacious house. The kitchen, bathrooms, and electrical work are all new, but the look, feel, and charm are the same as the year it was built. Peter and Deborah did a wonderful job remodeling and decorating. They are excellent B&B owners. And the view is spectacular. Don't forget your camera. We didn't know there are so many things to do within a few miles of Milton. We wish we could have stayed a week or two.

A Slice of Local History, Reborn
A Slice of Local History, Reborn
One does not visit a destination such as a lodge for a mere "place to sleep"; a chain hotel will serve very well for that. If you want to experience the full flavor of a less-traveled locale, tucked cozily as a bird's nest into the wooded hillside above the road (you feel like a gleeful child surveying passers-by from your secret treehouse), to wander its grounds and feel its whistle-stop-on-rural-railway history, to drink in watercolor views of trees and sky and water from the front porch, to be within a half-hour of Vermont's largest city but wake up to birdsong and the muted rush of the river, then come here for a restorative stay at Elderberry Lodge. Georgia, part of one of Vermont's northernmost counties but perched at the edge of bustling Chittenden county, is convenient to the interstate and a favorite with anglers, boaters, bicyclists and nature-lovers of all kinds. Elderberry Lodge, facing the Lamoille River-fed Arrowhead Mountain Lake, sat vacant for many a year, a once-comely dwelling fading into the derelict past before Peter and Deborah found it and committed,as they have done for several older houses in the area, to restoring it to beauty and purpose. Oral history proclaims it a likely mail pick-up for the railway (a post-filled leather bag hung on a hook near the tracks was caught up and brought along by the passing train), and the tracks wending through the woods behind the house are reminiscent of a bygone era. Inside, the lodge is clean and open, but featuring intimate, charming old-fashioned spaces harmonizing with the way we live now. Elegant simplicity, with the full menu of modern comforts one would expect in thoughtfully-designed lodgings, its every soft light and conversation-friendly chair speak tranquility and welcome. Those of us who watched this once-neglected two-story come back into its own feel a certain tenderness, stepping across exquisitely-fitted, softly-polished two-tone hardwood floors, admiring the graceful turn of re-purposed banisters along stairways, studying the shining high-end fixtures of the modernized baths and recalling how the dust and debris and much-bandaged hands and sore muscles presided for months where soft color, warmth and comfort now reign. This couple has an obvious reverence for vintage buildings, a gift for history-conscious restoration, and we locals are grateful. Another labor of love for Deborah and Peter, freshly restored and ready for you to fall in love with it in your turn.

About the owner: Peter is a machine tool programmer, working full time at a company in Winooski, where he has been for over thirty years. I am a semi-retired Jill-of-many-trades who currently operates our home style bed and breakfast in Milton, with Peter's help. We also share an interest in writing, Perer's story, the Prize, was recently published in the New England [Fictiona]l Crime Stories Anthology, Blood Moon. (house copy at the Lodge, more available at an author's discounted price) We have renovated 4 houses in the last 12 years including the Lodge and the Sampler House B & B which is our residence. On November 26, 2012, we embarked on a 5th house renovation. Yes, we are crazy. Yes, we love what we do!
Why the Owner Chose Georgia:
This house was a total wreck when we bought it in January of 2009. We renovated top to bottom, changing the layout but preserving the vintage feel. The house is great, the view is spectacular.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The property offers a feeling of seclusion although it is not in a remote location. The views are truly inspiring.
