Bloomsbury house description
The property is a three storey house in Bloomsbury's prettiest mews right in the heart of London, totally quiet with a large garage on the ground floor and a roof garden with lovely green views on top. It is architect-designed and has an unusual, open plan layout.
From the street door you climb a flight of stairs to arrive into the first floor kitchen. This is the heart of the house, with a light green Aga cooker making it cosy all year round and a circular maple dining table for six, or even eight at a squeeze. It is fully equipped with everything you might need, and has two windows looking out onto the mews. On this floor is the spare bedroom with a built in single bed, and a fold down single bateau bed/sofa. It has two large windows looking into a quiet green garden. Next to the bedroom is the bathroom, with tub, shower, basin and WC, and with Miele washing machine and dryer.
Up three steps is another WC, and another flight of steps takes you up to the living room, with a stting area under a skylight, a desk space, fireplace, and large windows looking into a green fig tree filled garden . At the far end of this room is a large day bed almost twelve feet long, which sleeps two adults.
Off this room are two small bedrooms with windows looking out onto the mews, shaded by vines from the west sun, one with a small double built-in bed, the other with a large single built-in bed. A narrow stair leads up to a sleeping den at rooftop level, just large enough for two.
A second external spiral stair takes you up to a spacious, secluded roof garden, overflowing with plants in the summer, with an outside dining table for eight nestling under the spread of two enormous London plane trees. This is where you will want to spend your time in the summer, though the spiral staircase up to it is a little bit scary for children under seven. The house is full of our paintings, books and quirky objects, but being architects we are also fond of simple clear spaces, so it does not feel cluttered.
The best thing, though is the neighbourhood, timeless Georgian architecture in quiet Bloomsbury streets, good neighbourhood restaurants nearby, and top restaurants like Moro and St John's a little further.
In the next street is the Dickens Museum, the Handel and Hogarth Museum is round the corner, as is Coram's Fields, a unique children's park with small zoo. The British Museum and British Library are ten minutes walk, and South Kensington museums are just 15 minutes by tube. Waitrose and the People's Supermarket are two brilliant local shops, and the Renoir cinema is one of London's best. Leather Lane and Chapel Market are two excellent traditional street markets. Transport to all parts of London and Britain, and to all airports, is very convenient.

A lot more than just accommodation
A lot more than just accommodation
If you are planning a stay in London and wish a different experience from the ordinary hotel room, I would recommend the flat at 6 Doughty Mews. It is centrally located in Bloomsbury with easy access to Great Russell, Chancery Lane and Holborn tube stops. There are plenty of places around to eat or gather food whether your taste is a small local café or more traditional fare at a close by modern shopping centre. The flat itself is located on a very quiet small street with a pedestrian only entrance at one end. Owned by the family of an architect it is well organized and fitted out, a bit like a gallery, theatre set and accommodation all combined. The first floor has two washrooms a large well equipped kitchen dining area and a separate den with computer and sleeping accommodations. The second floor has two more bedrooms and a living room with fireplace and glazed reading area. Finally there is a separate sleeping loft above for two more overlooking the roof garden. Five of us have spent 9 wonderful days during New Years at the flat. It is our second visit and will hopefully not be the last.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you so much for this review. A couple of things: the nearest tube station is Russell Square, not Great Russell, and we're also handy for dozens of buses, taxis, cycle hire, railway stations, the Eurostar train to Paris, and the soon-to-be-inaugurated Crossrail. We're really glad you had a good stay.

Year Purchased: 1982
About the owner: We are an architect couple, with a small, creative practice in London's Clerkenwell. We bought our house in 1982, did most of the conversion work ourselves, and have brought up three children there.
Why the Owner Chose Bloomsbury:
We think this is the best best place to live in all of London. It is incredibly central, yet very quiet, and we are woken each morning not by traffic but by birds and squirrels. Public transport is fantastic: four tube stations within walking distance, buses to everywhere, and Eurostar to Paris and Brussels just ten minutes away. There are cycle hire points nearby, and both the City and West End are within walking distance.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We designed every aspect of the house ourselves (we are both architects). It is open plan and deceptively spacious. It has been published internationally in books and magazines, and when we opened it for London Open House weekend we had hundreds of visitors. It is an unusual and beautiful house and people love it.
