Enjoy the mountain views, breezes and sounds of the Smith River from the covered veranda, screened porch or the private deck. Relax in the hot tub, or enjoy sometime in the sauna. Floor to ceiling windows, 17' ceilings, palladium windows, gourmet kitchen (enjoy the winter view while cooking!) and huge Great Room with Fireplace Extraordinaire provide a spectacular gathering place for cool evenings. This home is tucked away in a remote, secluded, gated community with few full time residence. Our out of country clients have said it very much resembles the Black Forest, others call it the Tuscany of America.
The owners purchased the land in 1996, originally camped here, built a cabin, and then in 2002, built this great Boca Grande Style home in the mountains. Sit any where in the house and you may see wild turkeys, deer, fox, birds, and much more. Downstairs, there is the Great Room, Dining Room, Entryway, Eat-in Gourmet Kitchen, Two Double Rooms (one with access to the screened-in porch), the other Bedroom, we lovingly refer to as 'The Library' with hundreds of books and a loveseat to sit and enjoy some quiet time. An expansive bathroom with walk-in shower sets between the two downstairs bedrooms. There is also a 1/2 bath between the 'mudroom' (with sink, washer/dryer) and the kitchen. From the Great Room (which can provide additional sleeping areas) and the Entryway, there is a grand central staircase built from oak and wrought-iron leading up to the double french doors that open up into the grand 650 square foot private Master Suite! This private space has high ceilings, a private deck, queen-size bed, single futon chair/bed, loveseat, walk-in closet, Kohler soaking tub, two pedestal sinks with mirrors and lights, linen closet and a double shower! This was an incredible weekend getaway! We enjoyed every minute, beginning from the time we arrived. Amazing home and so much to do at the house and around the area. We had planned to visit a winery nearby and did not even want to leave the house! Hopefully we can visit again very soon! Thank you!Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for your wonderful review, Jessica! We are so pleased that you had such a great time. We hope you will plan another trip very soon. Spring is beautiful when all the flowers, bushes and trees are in bloom...and the hummers return by April 24th. They will constantly entertain you! All the best, Cindi and Steve

We are a family of 5. Three kids under 5. And we stayed here for the Floyd Fest 2012. It is ideal in every way for a family. So clean. Roomy. Big spaces for kids to play/dance Wonderful owners who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We highly recommend this place. You'll love it.Recommended for: Families with young children.
Owner response: Alice, We were so happy to have you and your family stay with us! With all the outdoor activities in the area, families enjoy Courter Moon year 'round. Think about coming back when you can play in the river and Fairy Stone Park, only 20 minutes away, has a lovely beach and water toys for the kids. We look forward to your next visit!

We visited the Courtermoon last year with our family. We came from Georgia, S.C. and N.J. and met at this great house for 3 days. The home was comfortable for the 7 of us, and we are coming back this year at the same with 8 of us!! There was plenty of room for the kids to play, lots of quiet places to walk, and we enjoyed going to Floyd on Friday night. We are all definitely anticipating another wonderful Thanksgiving at our home away from home in Virginia!! Thanks Steve and Cindi for sharing your home with us.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners.

We enjoyed a great relaxing autumn weekend at Courtermoon. The atmosphere was as peaceful as we'd hoped, as you have to try to notice that anyone else is nearby. the house itself was beautiful, with everything we could have needed. Cindi and Steve were so helpful throughout the entire process and made the entire stay run smoothly. We were also able to enjoy a lot of what the surrounding area had to offer, which was, surprisingly, a lot.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

A true home away from home, nestled so comfortably in the beautiful Blue Ridge. Majestic views all around from the large veranda (well equipped by the way with your own private hot tub and sauna), make it almost essential to sit, relax and do nothing at all. If hiking is your will however, it's awesome! Multiple trail heads just a short drive away, or you can just walk out of the front door. Every room in the house feels like home and you will want for nothing. At the bottom of the property lays a lovely river and camping area with shelter, fire ring and all you need to easily enjoy the outdoors. Floyd is near by and a must see. We were welcomed personally by the Country Store owner during the weekly Flatfoot Dancing extravaganza. Chateau Morrisett is a nearby winery and was a wonderful place to hang out on the beautiful property, have wine and cheese, enjoy the sunshine and listen to more music. Finally, thank you to Steve and Cindi, Courter Moon's owners. They have built an amazing place and are friendly and responsive in setting up the details of your stay... they will treat you like family.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

This is such a beautiful home with amazing views all around. It had such a warm feeling to it and I loved all the personal touches around the house. The house is very spacious and easily accommodates a big group. Loved the beautiful view of the woods from the kitchen and the big terrace is an amazing place to chill. There is no need to bring anything with you other than your "food". Every room (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms) is fully equipped! There is an amazing fire pit down the road from this house by the river which is perfect for hanging out by the fire and grilling. If you choose to get out and about (not that you need to) , there is beautiful hiking grounds with amazing mountain top views a few minutes away and a little town called Floyd which has lots to do. Overall very clean and beautiful property! Had an amazing time and felt very comfortable during our stay. It was sad to leave but we will definitely be back next time for a longer period of time! Thank you so much for great memories! SaraRecommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: Steve and Cindi Courter have been the owners and caretakers of this property for nearly 17 years. It was purchased as raw land, and conceptualized, and built by them. Every detail on this property has been designed and completed by this family. Steve and Cindi are conservationists and environmentalists. Believing in 'Green Living,' they built their home 'Green' by using hardwoods and tile throughout, as well as low VOC paints, giving their home 'cleaner air.' The surrounding gardens and orchards are organically and biodynamically grown. When their son was young, the property was host to many a scouting event...camping, kayaking, bonfires, cookouts, etc. We love the outdoors, so we brought the outside in with all the floor to ceiling windows and a 50' covered veranda with screened-in porch. So, even when the weather is not conducive for outdoor activities, one can enjoy the outdoors from inside! When we are sharing our home with you, we stay in Virginia Beach at 'BeachCourters', Cindi's dad's old home. They currently split their time between Woolwine & Virginia Beach when not traveling. Steve is an Illinois farm boy who came to Virginia in the 70's, He is a licensed contractor and real estate broker. Who works as a special project manager. Cindi is originally from NJ, (both have lived adult lives in MD, VA & NC) Cindi holds a Bachelor Degee from MD Institute College of Art, and a Masters Degee from Duke. She is a non profit consultant, and also a local Realtor. The owners have 2 sons, one is an MD practicing in Indianapolis, the other is a Butler Theatre Grad. who is currently working as a set design/builder for Warner Bros. in Hollywood.
Why the Owner Chose Woolwine:
This property has been a 17 year project, 9 on the house, and the owners split time between Virginia Beach and Woolwine. The mountain house is so spectacular, we love to share it!! We operated as a B&B since 2007, and began marketing it on VRBO in 10/2011. Rock Castle Gorge is 6 miles away -- Enjoy up to a 10.8 mile hike through the gorge and up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The weekly Friday night Jamboree is internationally known for its bluegrass/country/gospel music. We are on the Around the Mountain Artisan Trail and the Crooked Road Music Trail. Visit two of Virginia's premier wineries -- Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalachia, as well as 35+ wineries in Virginia and North Carolina within a 1-1/2 to 2 hour radius! You don't have to go all the way to Napa Valley to enjoy wine touring! The area touts FloydFest in July, as well as many jazz and beach festivals throughout the year. When we bought this property, we were living and working in Durham, NC. The Blue Ridge Mountains were so rejuvenating and the cooler summer temperatures refreshing, especially by the Smith River! By immersing ourselves in nature we were protecting the health of our minds, bodies and spirits! Our well-being was enhanced in nature and the outdoors. The property was, and continues to be, a source of inspiration, solace, guidance and regeneration that we enjoy sharing with others! John Muir stated, 'In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.' We enjoyed the nourishment we gained from Mother Nature. Taking a long weekend, a week, or longer, we were immersed in Nature and rediscovered our 'true selves,' the ones unchained from traffic, shopping malls, work and societal pressures. It is sheer bliss to be amongst the trees, birds, wildlife, mountains and the clear, clean Smith River! By sharing our place with others, they can take a break from the modern social world and return to the natural environment surrounded by Nature...'a world away!'
The Unique Benefits at this Estate:
Our 12-acre estate sets amidst 300+ wooded acres in the horseshoe of the Smith River, a designated trout river. There are over 3 miles of hiking/biking on roads and trails. Walk to the waterfall, walk along the river. The property is a designated National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat, so we have songbirds and wildlife galore. We have had as many as 27 wild turkeys in our yard at one time with many deer, Blue Heron, kingfishers, raccoon, bear, and fox seen on a regular basis. One of the most favorite things to do is to sit on the covered veranda sipping coffee or tea in the morning or a glass of wine or beer in the evening with a dozen or so hummingbirds flying and buzzing by! The sounds of the spring peepers, crickets, tree frogs and bull frogs fill the air as we sit on the deck enjoying the mountain breezes. While staying at Courter Moon Lodge, our guests can enjoy a full day of activity and exercise and then enjoy the relaxing health benefits of taking a sauna in the infra-red sauna on the covered veranda and/or a soak in the hot tub! Upstairs, in the master suite, there is a Kohler soaking tub in the light-filled south-facing bath, and a double tiled shower. Drink your coffee or read a book while sitting on the private deck off the Master suite. Or, enjoy sitting in the screened-in porch at the end of the covered veranda. The lodge is very warm, friendly and your 'home away from home', even though it seems 'worlds away.' Many guest have remarked that it has a European feel, much like the Black Forest of Germany. Take a walk or drive down to the river and rest on the Pauley Island Hammock, picnic in the picnic shelter, or have a bonfire in the firepit near the river. Cindi and Steve have built a labyrinth in the 3-acre white pine thicket, as well as a reflexology walk for further meditation and quiet reflection. The labyrinth walk is 1/2 + mile in length when walking into the center and back out again. Great for artists/writers!
