Wake up someplace special in our South of the Border casita!
Get lost in a retro Mexican fiesta of fun and fantasy.
Surround yourself among the giant rocks and natural desert landscaping in this special casa and former art studio. Lots of windows and light accent the high beamed ceilings. French patio doors open up to the balcony overlooking the compound below. The old-style Mexican architecture takes you back to another world with custom-painted walls and aqua-marine acid-stained concrete floors. This is a hand-crafted casita like you've never seen - full of artful decor, collectibles and wonderful Western books.
The bedroom features a queen bed, plus a bonus sitting room- office in the back which contains a single bed for another person.
The open living room provides a queen-size sofa sleeper for 2.
Hallway bathroom has a large bathtub surrounded by corrugated tin and tile. The Mexican talavera sink and countertop sets off the colorful accents.
A cheery, sunny tiled kitchen features a full-sized refrigerator and adorable turquoise stove with matching sink. Even matching dishes and Mexicanware add to the theme and details of this artistic casa.
The special creative accents, bright, colorful furnishings and collectibles, deliver a distinctively native Southwest flavor to our largest casita. Friedo Kahlo has nothing on us!
With our attention to details, we hope our guests are left wanting for nothing and feel totally provided for. We'll even fresh-cut your mesquite wood on the outdoor BBQ grill.

As my wife and I rolled in from the airport past Rio Tierra's check in time Katy & John had left the light on for us and Katy met us at our car door. That evening as Katy showed us our new home for the next 10 days we were pleasantly surprised with how homey the MexiCasa really was. Not having time to stop and eat after a long flight the freshly made bread cake, coffee, cream, fresh fruit and other snack foods that were supplied in the kitchen was more than we ever expected and came in very handy for an evening snack and morning breakfast. You will not have to worry about supplies here, Katy and John have thought of it all. Seeing the place the next morning when the light of day appeared was tranquil. The landscaped property was great and gave us a nice setting to sit out on the patio to drink our coffee.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I made reservations for a week's stay at the MexiCasa based only on the information we found on the web....and were much more than happy with our accommodations. The whole experience at Rio Tierra far exceeded our expectations. We loved every minute of our retreat there and would unconditionally recommend it to anyone looking for adventure and "off the beaten path" charm in their lodging choices. No impersonal stale motel experience here, and very affordable in comparison as well. Beautiful, natural surroundings yet conveniently located. Tasteful, charming decor with shelves stocked with practical local books and vintage magazines. Katy and John have thought of everything and supplied it in abundance. We were actually able to cook up gourmet fare in the well stocked kitchen and enjoyed restaurants when we wanted to, not because we had to. Katy's supply of organic coffee and tea and ample goodies (did I mention all the chocolate?) was a nice touch also. The adjoining Nature Conservancy sanctuary is indeed a sanctuary and we treasured it's proximity (just a few steps from your door), and would encourage travelers to take advantage of easy hiking in this spectacular environment. Truly a relaxing "home away from home" experience!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

On a recent stay in the Rancho Deluxe quarters, within the Rio Tierra Casitas, my quest for the west quickly turned to a trail of jaw dropping antiquities and collectables. Hollywood set dressers need to take a lesson from these folks, Katy and John, who can take a simple bottle cap collection and turn it into a random star studded wall somewhere and half the fun is finding it. From the fully equipped and colorful vintage kitchen, to the wavy tin-paneled shower surround, to Navajo patterns and textiles and comfy cowboy bunk bed, these two know how to tastefully create the art form of Western lodging. I enjoyed the fresh morning amenities that were provided, a long walk down by the riverside and kicked around the rustic picnic grounds and fire pit. Exploring downtown was fun too, friendly merchants and more art to love on; leather, silver, silks. Wickenburg Ace Hardware rocks and where I found wicked accessories for my Halloween costume...who would have thought? I can recommend and I will be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.

April of 2010 my husband and I spent a long weekend here. Of the several casitas on property, we chose Rancho Deluxe, a one-bedroom casita with a cowboy theme. If you are nostalgic for the movie and TV cowboys of yesteryear, you will love this place! Throughout the living room, kitchen, bath, and bedroom are reminders of Roy and Dale, Hoppy, and Gene: framed advertisements; cowboy lamps and pillows, even a saddle! The front porch resembles the Old West town sidewalk - large plank decking, fun wooden rocking chairs, and a hithin' rail for your horses! The "bunkhouse", as our hosts like to call it, was very clean, quiet. Comfy bed, full kithcen. The hosts were very attentive to anything we needed. The back of the property borders the Hassayampa River. You can walk back to the river, borrow one of the hosts' lounge chairs, and sit by the river to read or just watch the river go by. I'd definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Wickenberg.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: I've lived all over the Great American West and previously owned a B&B in New Mexico. We're a professional lodging establishment and have been hosting guests around the West for over 15 years. In a past life as a ski bum, I also worked in the hospitality business in Sun Valley and Aspen. Collecting antiques and staging atmospheres is a passion, as well as international travel and cruising the USA in our vintage travel trailer or motorcycles. Down at the river, we trek into the forest and fill up on the abundance of nature or lose ourselves in our Moab-area red rock getaway near Canyonlands National Park in Utah.
Why the Owner Chose Wickenburg:
Finding this river oasis in the middle of the Sonoran desert was a gift. I don't do winters, so Wickenburg hit the spot!
It was the perfect canvas to create our hand-crafted casitas and share them with others. We've honored the history of former owner LaVesta Gardner's artist colony. She lived here and gave painting and pottery classes to Wickenburg residents. She is no longer with us, but we hope you'll feel her spirit which we've nurtured with artistic designs and colorful flairs throughout our rancheria.
We live in a separate on-site residence and are here to assist guests in any way--
to visit and share stories, or leave everyone to their own private space. Meeting interesting visitors is the highlight of this business! We hope you'll find Rio Tierra a remarkable Arizona memory.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Though much of the Hassayampa River runs dry most of the time--unless it floods--we are blessed to have the sweet rippling waters run year round on The Nature Conservancy's 600-acre property behind us. Just a two-minute walk away, you can escape into the cattails, giant cottonwoods and willow trees along our private trails. Or be still and drink in the soft sounds of nature and wildlife.
We'd love to help you plan a local hike or
assist with travel plans any way we can.
Trek to the top of famed Vulture Peak and feel on top of the world! You'll get kudos for that from everyone around!
Back at base camp, we offer an outdoor pavilion to gather in, birdwatch in, BBQ in
or stargaze in.
On the flip side of life, Trader Joe's is only 25 miles away. What a perk!
