Farmington house description
The Silver River Adobe is a place of rustic elegance that overlooks the confluence of the San Juan and La Plata rivers. Featured in this two bedroom B&B, the Juniper Room has its own private entrance and private bath, and opens out to a patio embraced by large cottonwood trees along the banks of the riverine nature reserve.
The main building of the Silver River Adobe is a contemporary example of the traditional architecture of Northern New Mexico, offering elements of luxury with the organic texture of exposed adobes and rough sawn timbers. This building rests on a sandstone cliff well above the flood zone of the rivers, nestled among the lush natural vegetation and bird-life characteristic of major rivers in this high desert region. About half of all New Mexico's surface flowing waters pass in front of our windows, from which one also experiences the long view of sunsets over the river and down the valley.
The high desert in the American Southwest:
Our home is blessed by the presence of foxes, beaver, coyote, eagles, blue herons, canadian geese, raccoons, and deer. We live in a landscape blessed by desert light. Come to enjoy the play of colors on the mesas and desert floor and you will bell as though you are living in a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. Re-imagine the literary characters of Oliver LaFarge’s “Laughing Boy” or Tony Hillermans’ detectives Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. The history of the Four Corners incorporates the rich cultures and traditions of Native Americans and the recent history of Spanish and American immigration to the Southwest. The Four Corners of the United States, (the only place four states touch at one corner), incorporates the Northwest corner of New Mexico and is part of the area known as 'Indian Country'.
Near to Farmington are the Parks of the Grand Canyon, Canyon lands, Canyon de Chelly, Chaco Canyon, Hovenweep, Mesa Verde, Aztec and Salmon Ruins. These National Parks offer a stupendous array of geological formations and Ancient Native American Ruins. You will recognize the names and scenery of these parks from the mystery novels of Tony Hillerman and many Hollywood films. Also on the list of geological wonders to visit are Shiprock (featured in the film Pontiac Moon with Ted Danson) and the Bisti Badlands wilderness, which has been a major site of dinosaur fossil excavations. Most of the above sites are close enough to Farmington for one day excursions from our B&B, or they permit the next easy day's drive in a regional tour.
Farmington, New Mexico and the Four Corners Area:
Thousands of years ago, Ancestral Puebloans farmed the land here, building awe-inspiring stone and adobe cities. They left a rich history you can still see today. They inhabited the area for hundreds of years prior to conquistador Francisco Coronado's AD1540 arrival in New Mexico, as his party searched for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. Their descendants currently reside in 20 pueblos in New Mexico and Arizona. The Navajos call this area Totah, the meeting place of the waters. The Animas, San JUan and La Plata rivers all meet in Farmington. Consequently, Farmington is an ideal meeting place for adventure seekers, history buffs and nature lovers alike. The countryside is filled with spectacular geological formations. Angel Peal, a formation the Navajo people believe protects sacred spirits, and Shiprock Pinnacle, also esteemed by the Navajo, are two such recognizable attractions.
