It was such a beautiful home!!! Two couples with active families took a break from it all and stayed at the Merrick House for the week-end. It was so nice to just sit back and relax. My husband did some fishing and we did a little gambling at the river boat. We watched the Iowa game in the family room in the basement and enjoyed the big couch. The game was a disappointment, but the house certainly wasn't. I know all of us would love to come back again sometime.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Julie, I think I am supposed to get part of your Riverboat winnings. Thanks for the great review and we hope to see you back again soon. Mike

Myself, my friend and our 3 teenage boys stayed at the Merrick house for a long weekend. The house was beautiful! We enjoyed walking on the river walk and going for bike rides. One afternoon we treated ourselves to amazing pie from the White Pickett Fence Cafe and ice cream from Joe's Pizza. We finished off our stay spending the afternoon in Dubuque then ordering out Joe's Pizza for supper that night. I really hope to stay here again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you Susan, I am pleased to know that our effort to make bikes (including a 21 speed tandem) available was appreciated. We will be looking forward to your next visit. Mike

9/15-9/19/12 I grew up fishing the river from Abel Island in the summers and -after 50 years came back with 2 friends from Oregon to see if I could recreate some great fishing memories. The fishing wasn't great,as the river is extremely low, though we did finally catch some fish. The house was excellent- really more than 3 old guys could need. We stayed mostly in the kitchen/dining area which was perfectly laid out for our needs. It has excellent access to the River. The owner, Michael, and caretaker, Jeff, were easy to work with and Jeff even helped us find some decent fishing on the nearby Turkey River. Visited with some family and just enjoyed the beautiful River and scenery. Sorry to see the Rose Garden go under as it was the best for breakfast. Doug's was decent for the nights we didn't eat fish. I would recommend this to anyone. Hoping it won't be fifty more years before I can get back.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: I was actually hoping Rob and his friends would invite me along to share in their Tom Saywer/Huck Finn adventure but no such luck. Rausch's Cafe hosted President Obama for breakfast and I hear he was pleased with his order. When he saw that everyone else had ordered bacon and how good it looked he did the same. I again have to thank Jeff for being so attentive so my guest did not go home without a couple of fish dinners. Jeff operates a taxidermy business and his work is spectacular. Just walk two doors down and hand him the fish and he will take care of the rest. Mike

There was a group of gals celebrating a get-away weekend and we were pleasantly surprised and pleased that the pictures actually did NOT do justice to the home! We absolutely loved our visit and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Location was exceptional and to wake up every day and see the Lazy River, was great. Only thing better would have been to be there a few weeks later for the Fall foliage. Mike the owner was very attentive to our needs and there was even a "caretaker" just two doors away who came over to show us technically challenged gals how to work the CD player! We were there for the German Fest in Guttenberg, and that was a great time as well.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. Now that you know the way maybe you can come back with your husband in a couple weeks for the fall foliage. German Fest weekend is always a fun time to be in Guttenberg. I did not know the "caretaker" was so technically capable and I am glad he was available to help. Mike

Our stay at Merrick House was wonderful. Our children & 2 grandchildren met us there to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We were thrilled to find an anniversary cake & goody bags waiting for us! We enjoyed using the lovely kitchen with modern appliances and prepared & ate our meals at the house. The house was attractive, spotless, and a perfect location with a beautiful view of the river. Judy met us when we arrived and was so gracious in showing us around and answering all our questions. My daughter had prepared a DVD slide show for our anniversary which we watched on the up-to-date equipment connected to the large screen TV. Although we didn't have time to view them, several movies & books were laid out for our use. Our family enjoys the out-of-doors and near-by Pike's Peak State Park and the path along the river added to our enjoyment. Our grandson made use of the bikes provided. Overall, we highly recommend this house as a vacation spot!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: I thrive on a "breakthrough" every day and your eloquent review provided just that. I can't say enough about the special care Judy and Jeff have given my clients. I plan to take two trek 700 hybrid bikes over later this week. They are his and hers, completely adjustable, and ready to ride. I will also have a retro tandem there to ride around town with in the near future as well. Thank you Edythe. Mike

Mike, The house was more than we had expected. Loved it! The decorator did a wonderful job. The kitchen was fun to use and equipped with everything we needed and more. Jeff and Judy were very helpful and Judy brought us cinnamon rolls from the farmers' market Saturday morning. We weren't planning to eat in, but we liked being here so much we ate all but one meal here. We would have enjoyed the porch and deck more if it hadn't been so hot. The directions you wrote out for us about the electronics were very easy to follow. One thing missing (or you just couldn't find it) was a flyswatter. If you still own the house next spring we are really considering renting it again. We had a wonderful stay and thank you for all the extras you did. We didn't need any of your wine, beer, or snacks but it was nice to have them there if we would have needed them.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Diana, Thanks for such a positive review. Jeff and Judy are two very special people and I am fortunate to have their services. The flyswatter was conveniently out of sight above the fridge. Mike

Merrick House proved to be elegant, spacious and relaxing. Original brick and limestone peek through the walls of the house. This historical preservation doesn't diminish the modern comforts found there. A large kitchen and downstairs bar area could accommodate a large group, and the many decks and balconies offered a place to enjoy the summer breezes. The house faces the Mississippi River, and every window's view is breathtaking. Lock and Dam Number 10 is within walking distance, as is most of the town. We had a wonderful lunch at Rausch's Cafe and enjoyed ice cream at Joe's Pizza on the riverfront. That night, the Guttenberg Pool hosted a midnight swim for all ages. We enjoyed our stay at the Merrick House and had a great time looking around Guttenberg.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway.

I highly recommend this house. When we arrived and saw the bikes to ride we were super excited. You can go everywhere in Guttenberg on a bike. The Mississippi River is right across the street with the lock and dam within walking distance. Music in the park on Friday night. If you can small town life this if for you. The owner and neighbors were so friendly. The house was super clean and very well maintained. When walked around town and we kept finding pennies everywhere (on ledges, rails, etc) and all of them were face up. We asked the locals what they meant and they said they were pennies from heaven. What an added blessing to our wonderful experience.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: I was happy to know that my guests had such a great experience while staying at the Merrick House which included using the bikes that are provided to explore Guttenberg, and finding the people so friendly.
