ABOUT OUR AREA: The beaches of Costa Rica are renowned throughout the world for their unparalleled beauty. Costa Rican beaches have been attracting visitor for years, and it’s easy to see why. The white sandy beaches rolling out to greet the turquoise waves creates a picturesque scene that one usually only encounters in the pages of National Geographic or on a postcard from some far away paradise. One visit to Costa Rica and you’ll see for yourself why this charming tropical country continues to be a favorite destination for people from all over the world.
The most stunning of Costa Rica’s beaches can all be found in the Guanacaste Province, tucked into the Northwestern corner of the country. Here, you will be delighted by the dramatic landscape, complete with volcanoes, rain forest, tropical dry forest, and rolling hills. Just a short drive from your home in Las Catalinas, in the town of Tamarindo you can surf the waves at some of Costa Rica’s most well known and loved breaks. Intrepid backpackers, international yoga students, and high end tourists all gather in the streets of Tamarindo to partake in the world class cuisine offered in the restaurants, the thriving nightlife and entertainment scene, and the relaxing vibe that is Costa Rican culture. Just north of Tamarindo is Playa Grande and nesting sea turtles are one of the main attractions of the area. You can witness one of nature’s miracles by taking a night tour of the area.
Just north of Tamarindo you will discover Flamingo Beach, or Playa Flamingo. While this beach has been known for years for its white sand that stretches for a mile, it has only recently become a major destination. Flamingo Beach was one of the first beaches to receive international attention for its remarkable beauty, but it used to be hard to reach. Thanks to improved infrastructure in the area, Flamingo Beach is now easily accessible. Flamingo Beach is home to a small marina, which provides a good hub to catch a boat out to the Catalinas Islands for scuba diving or a catamaran out for a sunset sail. Deep sea fishing is another favorite activity of visitors to Flamingo Beach.
Head south from Flamingo Beach, past Tamarindo and the beaches of Avellanas, Hacienda Pinilla, and Playa Negra lie waiting to be explored. These smaller beach towns offer up their own unique charms and while the area is not completely desolate, the golf course at Hacienda Pinilla is one of the most famous in the country, this area still sees fewer visitors than its neighbors. The surfing at Avellanas is perfect for beginners or intermediate and the romantic backdrop of the rocky outcrops at Playa Negra make this the perfect day trip for sightseeing and finding a hidden beach to yourself.
Further north from Las Catalinas visitors will be delighted by the neighboring beaches of Playa de Coco and Playa Hermosa. Both beaches sit nestled in bays, creating calm waters that are great for sunbathing and swimming. While the surfer might get bored here, amble diving activities hold the attention of other travelers. The quiet, calm beauty of Hermosa is paired nicely with the livelier, younger scene of Playa del Coco. Playa del Coco has become a bit of the party town for this region and it is similar to Tamarindo in that it attracts all walks of life. Great nightlife can be found in Playa del Coco with awesome restaurants and bars with live music and beach parties that can last all night. Playa Hermosa retains the more quiet vibe, which works perfectly as the two towns and beaches are located only 10 minutes from each other.
Whatever it is that your heart desires, one thing is certain: the beaches of Guanacaste, from the surf as Avellanas, to the international mix of Tamarindo, and the tranquil beauty of Hermosa, there is something here for everyone. Come discover the magic of Costa Rica and explore the different beach towns that surround Las Catalinas. You will never want to leave once you see what this area has to offer.
