Beynac is in a good location. It was great to have restaurants and shops in walking distance after long day touring as there is much to see in area. Owners have arranged house in a very accessible way and provide all needed information on appliances, etc. It didn't take time to get settled. Beautiful view of river and castles across.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner response: Many thanks for your kind and positive review. Trusting that your 40 anniversary celebration was all you had hoped for. Kind regards Ruth and Mike

My husband and I did a lot of research on where to stay in the Dordogne region, and when we saw Mike and Ruth's house in Beynac, we knew we had found the perfect place for us. It did not disappoint! We had a most amazing week in this very special region of France. The house itself is beautifully appointed and quite comfortable, as well as surprisingly quiet for being on a popular walkway for tourists. We lived mainly in the kitchen when we were in the house, drinking in the views outside the kitchen balcony window. (The kitchen and living rooms are on the first floor - second floor in American terms.) We watched the Dorodgne river pass by and there were hot air balloons floating above most mornings and early evenings. The back yard terrace is also quite lovely, but as it was 90-95 degrees every day, it was too hot to sit out there most of the time. We did enjoy one evening there, looking straight up at the castle and drinking wine. What could be better? Mike and Ruth were very helpful in answering our questions and addressing any other items that cropped up. All of the information they send you ahead of time is spot on. We found it a simple matter to get our week-long parking permit (good for all public parking lots in Beynac). Basic grocery store, butcher, patisserie are all within a 5 minute walk - my husband loved going down to the patisserie each morning to get fresh croissants! I would recommend doing a big shopping at the supermarket outside St. Cyprian (or Sarlat) on your way to Beynac if you plan to cook with any regularity or make picnic lunches. Then you can "fill in" with the local store. There are several restaurants in Beynac. We highly recommend Petite Tonnelle over all the others for quality and service. We also rented a canoe for the day from Canoe Dordogne - they are based in La Rocque Gageauc and will drop you off and pick you up at a number of places along the river. It couldn't be easier!. And we splurged and did a hot air balloon ride (how could we not after seeing them glide by the house each day?). There are several options: we chose to go with Lionel Druet and Montgolfiere Chateaux in Beynac. We drove all over the region - probably hundreds of miles - it's all so beautiful and there seems to be a castle or chateau around every bend. I'd recommend getting a good Michelin map of the area (we used #329 - Correze, Dordogne) so you can drive on back roads without fear of getting lost. Thank for a truly memorable time!

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner response: Very please that you enjoyed your stay and managed to do so much especially in the heat this summer. We will think about how we can make the patio more useable in the very hot weather - maybe a frame that I can train the wisteria over to create more shade. I will also get the map you suggested for use by future guests. La Petite Tonnelle is getting quite a name for itself, booking is essential, as with the Auberge Lembert. The restaurants in Beynac have blossomed over the last two years. Thank you for your comments - they are much appreciated.

I recently spent a week in Ruth and Mike Duckworths beautifully restored 17th Century cobblers home in Beynac. With me was my wife, our son, his wife and their 12 and 15year old children. The house is comfortably furnished, interesting antiques, well provisioned with loads of kitchen ware, cutlery etc.. We appreciated that staples such as salt, oil, jam, herbs, sugar were in the cupboards and we did not have to buy them all for a weeks stay. The beds were comfortable, the linen first class and the rooms quiet. We marveled each morning at the views from the kitchen across the river to castles and chateaus, at times the sky was filled with colorful hot air balloons carrying those with enough money to splurge on a special view of the Dordogne River. The back terrace was an ideal place to enjoy an outdoor meal under the imposing cliffside of the castle. The house is situated on a small road off the main street and is positioned in such a way that the road noise does not make it to the house. The house is an interesting 15 minute walk to the castle and five minutes from the river and a butcher, a baker and a grocery store. The river is great for swimming and a wonderful place to cool off on a hot summer day. Mike and Ruth proved to be great hosts, calling to make sure everything was OK. The family thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We give Ruth and Mikes place the highest recommendation.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your wonderful property. It has a fantastic and enviable position in Beynac. The children loved kayaking across to the little beach and spent many hours just enjoying the river. My husbands' favourite spot was sitting just inside the kitchen balcony window gazing at the amazing views across the Dordogne, mine was relaxing on the patio enjoying the sun and the peace! The firework festival was absolutely brilliant, the kitchen balcony transformed into a private viewing box and we felt very privileged as we watched hoards of locals and tourists alike gathering outside our front door - hours early for the 11pm spectacle. The display lasted at least 30 minutes and even included fireworks that landed and floated along the river. However, owing to the rain earlier that day there was a lot of moisture in the air and soon it became very hard to see any of the display through the cloud of smoke that hung low over the water. The explosions echoed along the river and I'm sure could be heard for miles around. It was a real highlight of our holiday in Beynac - and I hope you are able to enjoy it yourself in the future. We would love to return and I'm sure you will be hearing from me soon to rebook.

We had an absolutely fantastic time in Beynac - thank you! Your house is amazing and the village is beautiful. We didn't want to leave and would love to book again sometime soon! I thought all the information provided was excellent - really comprehensive and useful and everything provided in the house was great - it really felt like home. Your house is in the most perfect location and the views from the front and back are truly magnificent! We visited lots of other surrounding places but nowhere is quite as lovely as Beynac - it's idyllic! Many thanks again for enabling us to enjoy a fabulous family holiday!

We researched the VRBO website for accommodations in the Dordogne region where we could rendezvous with our two grown daughters and son-in-law for a week in June. This house in Beynac exceeded our hopes for a comfortable home, well-situated, and with spectacular views of the river, nearby castles, and scenic countryside. Beynac-et-Cazenac is a small, picturesque village with good restaurants and amenities (including wonderful croissants). During our week, and with a car, we took our time sightseeing, visiting Sarlat's market day and Lascaux II, canoeing on the river, seeing a goose farm, touring Beynac and Castelnaud castles, joining a Saturday night community supper in St. Pompon, viewing La Roque St. Christophe and other local sites--and could easily have passed another week there. The house is well-equipped and spacious, with three full-sized bedrooms, large rooms, and a backyard patio, yet still retains the ambience of a long-established structure. My favorite spot was the balcony off the kitchen, where we could watch the river go by. (There are several staircases, but given the cliffside aspect of Beynac, I suspect every house in town has stairs.) The owners were quite helpful, providing clear directions to the house and appliances, suggesting local services, and answering all of our questions by e-mail. Before we selected this rental, we asked ourselves whether we'd prefer a country/farm setting, or the convenience of a village. For other travelers who would choose a village setting, I cannot picture a more satisfying Dordogne Valley location than this property proved. We loved it.

We are back in the US after a wonderful trip. I think it is unanimous among our party that our stay in Beynac was the highlight. We visited the castle multiple times, hiked to Castlenaud, canoed, visited the ruins at Commarque - fantastic, really got to know Sarlat and just had a great time. The house worked out beautifully. We cooked in one night early in our stay and, as I chopped vegetables, looked out the door onto lovely balcony and could see three castles. It was one of many - Pinch Me, Is This Real - moments. The house was very well-equipped with the very helpful notebook of things to do, comfortable bedrooms, lovely lounge area and that terrace. Incredible. The plantings also add a very nice touch, the roses were beautiful and the lavender by the front door welcomed us home each day. We would all highly recommend your house. I hope we can visit again. Alas, Already looking forward to our next trip. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely house.

We are a family of five (pre-teen to age 6). The house was lovely, cool in the hot weather, and had everything, sooooo thoughtful. We have stayed at many houses over the past month, and this was the best. Descriptions accurate, communication from owner excellent, and I am sighing as I write this (looking at the view of a chateau across the river from the kitchen table from which I write.......as we leave tomorrow). The local butcher (2 min walk has excellent ham and other meat), and the boulangerie has the best almond croissant my husband has tasted on our 3 weeks in France. We canoed with a company Detente today, and they were REALLY good. Friendly, safe and a lovely spot on the river to have a picnic. Some fly screens or bars on wiindows would have made me feel safer iwht young kids around, but no adverse events, so all good! Thankyou for a fabulous stay. I would love to come back

Owner response: Many thanks for the kind words in your review, they are much appreciated and you would be more than welcome should you wish to visit us again. With regards to the bars/fly screens on the windows: We understand your concerns, in fact Mike and I have discussed this before. We initially discussed it with the architect when the house was being renovated and the bars in the sitting room window openings were added in accordance with criteria based on the architectural heritage specifications. These specifications are quite strict, down to colour of shutters and type of shutter etc as we are in the environs of an historic monument. As such I am not sure we would be permitted to put up fly screens but we can enquire. No bar was put in the attic bedroom as the window was placed at least 4 feet above the floor. Thank you again for your comments and glad you enjoyed your stay.

Beynac was absolutely gorgeous and from the moment I got there I knew I wanted to return one day. The village and surrounding area seemed like a fairytale (and I'm glad we decided to stay in Beynac instead of the more touristy Sarlat). Beynac was also close enough to everything we wanted to do in the area so it was an easy drive to anywhere. The house was also beautiful and very spacious. There was everything a visitor could want...full kitchen, movies, lots of information about the area, instructions for appliances, comfy beds....etc. Ruth and Mike were very helpful and friendly throughout the booking process and I would highly recommend this place to anyone, and would love to return one day myself! Beynac was my favorite part of our three weeks in France.

Owner response: So pleased to hear you liked the area. Beynac has all the facilities; shops, Restauants, and beautiful views without being too large and is ideally positioned to access the wider region. Thanks for taking good care of our house. Do come again sometime - you are most welcome. Regards Mike and Ruth

The house was exactly as described. Very clean, nicely furnished, comfortably arranged. We were a group of 5 adults, 2 couples and a single. We appreciated the distance between the bedrooms, affording everyone a sense of privacy. The living room was spacious, providing adequate space for exercising, game-playing, video watching, and/or just gathering. The kitchen was well-equipped with everything one would need to prepare a meal. The terrace, above the house, was a lovely and pleasant setting - we were sorry to be able to enjoy it only once, given the relentless rain during our visit. In spite of the rain, we found many wonderful and interesting things/ places to explore in the area - chateaux, museums, caves, markets, gardens, villages. Our sense of history was greatly enhanced. We had many delicious meals in various restaurants and found everyone to be warmly welcoming and instructively helpful. Several of us were unfamiliar with the specialities of Perigord and experienced an explosion of culinary discovery. We all slept well, gained weight and felt blessed to find ourselves in a place where each panaromic view seemed to trump the last. I cannot imagine a nicer place to spend a vacation, whatever the weather.

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. It has been unusually dry in the region over winter. It is unfortunate that nature chose to compensate for this during your weeks visit! I can only suggest that you come again sometime and see the areas more sunny side! You would be most welcome. Kind regards Ruth and Mike.

We had a wonderful time in Beynac - the house was perfect for our stay and we really enjoyed being able to go to the markets and bring things home to cook, instead of having to eat at restaurants all the time - although we did manage to get to a few of those as well. Beynac is so beautiful ... and we saved the castle for our final day there - the best for last! We had a bit of difficulty arriving on the Saturday, as the Mairie was, of course, closed for the weekend. Luckily we ran across a lovely person in a restaurant who wrote us a note in French to leave in the car so no-one ticketed us over the weekend, and we were at the office first thing Monday to buy our pass, so it didn't become a big problem. We very much enjoyed our stay at your house, and look forward to future visits to the Dordogne region. Thank you!

Our group of 3 couples from Australia enjoyed our week in this house very much. The description of the house was accurate, and the owners very helpful with any queries we had. The views from every level are beautiful, however we probably didnt realise how many levels there are!! We loved the village of Beynac and it is only a short stroll from the house to the shops and restaurants. The surrounding area and other villages are beautiful too, and is well located for visiting the larger town of Sarlat. I would thoroughly recommend this house and location.

Recommended for: Girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay. Most houses in Beynac are on various levels on account of the sloping streets. We moved the living areas to the first floor to try and reduce the use of stairs during the day. It also takes advantage of the beautiful views. There is an upside to this, you always go home fitter than when you arrive!

We had a wonderful stay in your gorgeous house. It was beautifully situated and the kids did the walk between your place and my mum and dads next to the castle, several times a day. We had excellent weather, which really added to the holiday atmosphere. Everything about the house was great, we had a lovely BBQ one night and were delighted with the well appointed kitchen. It was very convenient having all the cleaning products available and enough toilet paper for the stay. Small things that just make the whole experience more pleasant. The children loved the DVD selection which came in handy after trips out when they just wanted to veg and Pete and I were happy enjoying the view from the kitchen with a glass of wine or sitting on the little balcony. Our 10 yr old loved using her yr6 French on independent bakery runs every morning, which was a real treat for us. It really is a very well situated home for a family. Thank you so much to Ruth for suggesting the Hotel du Chateaux for dad’s birthday celebrations. I would recommend it again to anyone who wants to celebrate a special occasion. The hot air balloon trip was just wonderful also. An experience of a life time. Once again thanks for a truly wonderful stay in your lovely home.

Stephen and I returned yesterday from a fabulous time at your place. Nancy and Josh will have left this morning. The weather was amazing. We explored the area tried out the local restaurants, canoed and visited la Font de Gaume and la Goufre de Padirac as well as some of the towns around. Your place is really well set up. You have done a great job on supplying house and local information. I enjoyed watching the deer ,herons and foxes with binoculars in the field across the river every morning. You have obviously spent a lot of time and energy on making the house so nice. The instant hot water was a definite plus and the well equipped kitchen was a dream after the place we rented in Provence last year - where I don't think they ate in much. While we were there the Iris bloomed at the back. We enjoyed sitting and eating out on the patio - and we looked down on it from the castle when we went up there! Everything else including the roses at the front were stunning. We really think we picked a perfect week. If you ever felt like writing a bit more about the history of the house in your visitor information that would be really interesting. If I have any friends going that way I would recommend it. All the very best

My partner and I recently spent a short holiday at this gorgeous medieval house in Beynac where we had a really enjoyable and memorable time. The village of Beynac and the surrounding area are absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look, there is another stunning vista. The view from the house is especially nice; whether it be from the kitchen balcony or the bedroom windows, you overlook the meandering river with castles and rolling hills beyond. There is also a spectacular view from the garden terrace at the back of the house: look directly above and you can see Beynac Castle at the top of the cliff face. It’s such a great view when sitting out enjoying some food or wine on the terrace. We found plenty to do in Beynac and the surrounding towns such as visiting the castles, canoeing, wine tasting, eating out at restaurants, visiting local markets, visiting underground caves or simply enjoying the sun on the garden terrace. The owners were very helpful and left a visitor pack with all the necessary information in. I’d highly recommend this house to anyone else. It is clean, spacious, relaxing and obviously well cared for by its owners. It’s unlike anywhere I have stayed before, boasting its exposed wooden beams, original brickwork and charming style. The master bedroom is particularly stunning and both bathrooms are modern and fresh. The kitchen comes with all the mod cons for preparing your own meals if you so wish and the lounge is large and comfortable (with a nice selection of board games in the cupboard!!). Thank you very much for a great stay!

We arrived at the beautifully traditional house in the late afternoon to be treated to a fantastic view from the kitchen balcony along the Dordogne and across to Castlenaud in the distance. What a sight, and as we watched hot air balloons rose slowly from the castle grounds in front of us and drifted lazily away in the almost still air. As shown on the photographs the house is spotlessly clean, well maintained, well appointed and deceptively spacious. Lots of original wood everywhere. There are two excellent bathrooms, three large bedrooms and a large well lit lounge where you can pick grapes through the windows from the vine growing on the front wall. The exposed stonework and original wood flooring in the lounge make this a cool and peaceful area in which to relax and socialise both at the start and the end of the day. The kitchen has all the modern appliances you would need and is large, light and airy with a balcony overlooking the quiet street below with stunning views over the Dordogne and surrounding area. The house is on three levels which makes it a very interesting place to stay with the opportunity for a large family to have their own individual space and privacy. Beynac is a fascinating town, steeped in history. The local restaurants and shops are excellent, well priced and friendly and there are many towns and local sites of historical interest. Sarlat is a very beautiful medieval town, ideal for the history enthusiats and La Roque-Gageac and Domme are equally pretty towns along the Dordogne. There are many outdoor activiites available but we particlarly enjoyed the local canoeing opportunities and there are several small companies to choose from. They will transport you 10, 15 or 20kM upstream on the Dordogne or the Vezere (your choice of dictance) and you then you paddle or drift with the current, back to the start point, along fantastic limestone gorges with mirror smooth water. We travelled 15kM one day and only encountered two other canoes. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house most highly to others wishing to experience the relaxing Dordogne atmosphere while staying in a beautiful, traditional french village house. As a final note, I was intrigued to find out that the house and street features on the opening scenes of the 2000 film, Chocolat with Johhny Depp and Julliette Binoche. Watch the film and look out at the start for the sloping cobbled road and the house and you'll see why they chose the view.

Owner response: It is nice to know that others feel the same way as we do about the house and this wonderful location. We are glad to have the oportunity to share the experience with others. It is true that the opening scenes of the film 'Chocolat' follow Julliette Binoche and her daughter in red capes as they walk slowly up the cobbled road past our house.
