Keywords: High on a bluff 600 ft above Waipio Bay, on property once owned by King Kamehameha IV, sits Hale 'Io. Magical sunsets and sunrises without the glare or heat, Maui on the horizon, gentle nightime rains to lull you to sleep (and make the rainbows) and a quiet and peacefulness so hard to find - this is the magic of Hale 'Io. Lush surroundings, sexy pool with concealed rock slide and waterfall and views that never quit, never. Watch whales from the lanai or ocean deck, awaken to the birds, listen to the wind - it really speaks to you here.
Owner-built, architect designed, custom home for laid back family living. Lush grounds, organic fruit orchard, ample parking, sexy beach-entry pool, magnificent kitchen - 2 dishwashers, 2 microwaves, 2 ovens, warming drawer - fit for the accomplished cook. Color abounds to reflect the natural hues of Hawaii. The house is the color of the ocean, both deep and shallow water and inside is a rainbow cacophony that no photos can do justice. Simply stunning for the non color-phobes! Many exotic woods and finishes, but truly designed for in and out living and a laid back lifestyle. Culinary tours originate here and the chef is available for your private repast. You can sleep a lot more than 10 here, but need
to believe that the comfy sofa, futons and pune' on the lanai are OK for overnights. Don't worry, you'll believe, as that is where you'll nap! Bring the kids, but they have to sign the contract about the cliff, the pool, the sliding hill and the fort ;-) - which means they must be at least the age of reason and capable of understanding the danger. Pool is completely fenced, cliff is not.
Five bedrooms, 3 with ensuite bathrooms, one with 'across the hall' bathroom and one without. Two lush outdoor showers. Secret room.....if you can find it, you can sleep there.

My family was looking for a house for a week long family reunion. Once we saw the pictures of Hale 'Io we couldn't convince ourselves to stay anywhere else, and we were not disappointed. The views are amazing and the variations in the weather make you want to keep checking it out. We never ate a meal inside because the view from the lanai was so enticing. The house was fantastic - beautifully decorated, comfortable, and usable. The rooms are set up really well for multiple families because the bedrooms each have their own bathroom. We brought kids ages 5-11 and they loved the pool, the water slide, the yard games, the board games, the piano, and the secret room. The pool area alone could have kept them occupied for days, but we did want to visit the rest of the island. We were a little worried about it being too remote, but it was easy to get out and there is a full grocery store only a short drive away. The location was convenient for visiting both the Kona side and the Hilo side. The owner was very responsive and helpful, and we would certainly love to go back again. We all joked that no other vacation is ever going to live up to this one!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was the most incredible location I can imagine. The view alone will knock your socks off. If you like yoga, there is a yoga / lookout deck that overlooks Waipio and the Pacific that is just majestic. The house itself is very tastefully designed and decorated - fully loaded kitchen & bar area with a lava rock grotto pool area complete with a hot tub and even a waterslide! The day bed in the center of the house provided me with one of the most peaceful naps that I have ever had, no exaggeration. The property is well manicured and all the amenities were in working order while we stayed. We had such an amazing time - it was worth every penny. I can stop talking about this place to my friends and relatives...Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This place is amazing! Pictures cannot capture the true beauty of the ocean vistas. Almost every room in the house has an incredible view of the ocean, cliffs, a waterfall,or the Wai'pio Valley. We saw whales and dolphins playing in the ocean below. The house is spacious, well-decorated, comfortable and has everything you need to make a big meal including: gas ranges, rice cooker, crock pot, built in wok, outdoor grill, lots of dishes, 2 dishwashers and much more. There are 2 big tables (one indoor and one outdoor) that can accommodate at least 10. There is one big patio (lanai) that is great for hanging out or relaxing, there are also several smaller patios that are good for reading a book or taking a nap. An observation deck offers even more great views. The house has internet, a big cable TV, a nice collection of board games and books, and stylish and comfortable furniture throughout. There is a nice, lush lawn that is great for laying out or lawn games. The whole property is very well landscaped. There are tons of tropical plants and fruit trees. The plants in the pool area are especially lovely. The waterslide is terrific! There are lots of towels, comfy bathrobes, and nice linens. The owner was great! She was very knowledgeable about the area and made sure we had everything we needed and was very attentive. The place is very well kept up, everything was very clean. There is a lot to do in the area, but this house is so amazing that it can be hard to leave even for a day trip. I have never stayed in such a great place! The views cannot be beat and the house is stocked with everything you need to enjoy your stay. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to spend some time at a very special place. I already want to go back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We stayed for a week at this beautiful property. The views are wonderful (Waipio Valley, the cliffs and sometimes even Maui in the distance) and the house has every amenity you could possibly want. Its beautifully designed, with a chef's kitchen, plenty of relaxing space, 4 spacious bedrooms, and a lovely lanai. The pool and hot tub are an added bonus. Only 15 minutes away from the town of Honokaa, and just steps away from fantastic hiking and sightseeing. Overall, a beautiful, relaxing space!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

There are several words that come to mind when I think of this vacation home: stunning, gorgeous, breathtaking, secluded, relaxing, and vibrant! My fiancee and I stayed at Hale 'Io with 7 other friends and had a BLAST! There are so many valuable amenities at this vacation home. My favorite features were definitely the patio, the observation deck, and the beautiful tropical landscaping.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

I am sometimes skeptical of raving reviews, but I cannot say enough good things about this property. As beautiful as the pictures are, they do not do the house justice. We got in after dark, and when we woke up the next morning (after falling asleep with the sound of a light rain, and the windows open [an almost nightly occurrence]). I awoke to stunning views of the cliffs and the ocean, and a clear and gorgeous day. The house is so comfortable and the owner has thought of everything- you will want for nothing, except a few more nights. The kitchen easily accommodated our large party of friends. There were two dining tables that seated 14+ adults; a wide lawn perfect for yard games (which are provided), and an observation deck with an amazing view. I went out every morning to drink coffee, read, and do sun salutations while looking for whales and spinner dolphins. This was truly a perfect piece of paradise.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Just returned from a week-long stay at the house, which is beautiful and very well maintained. The pictures and video don't do the property justice. It is stunning, particularly when the weather is as wonderful as it was during our visit in early March. Everything was in good working order, including appliances (dishwashers, washer, dryer, coffee machine, freezer, etc.), electronics (TV, cable, internet, sound system, etc.), the pool (saltwater!!!), hot tub (not salt water), and grounds. Clearly, the groundskeeper does an excellent job with his landscaping duties. My favorite things about the property: (1) More than enough beds and living space for the nine adults in our party. There are comfortable places to congregate and numerous spots, both indoor and outdoor, for some alone time. (2) There were TWO dishwashers. (3) WATER SLIDE!!! (4) The views. The property sits on a cliff from which you can see Waipio Valley, Waipio Bay (and its cetaceans), and Maui. For me, the most remarkable thing was the inability to see or hear any signs of development beyond the house itself. (5) The owner (wonderful, energetic Eileen) lives nearby, allowing her to address any problems that might arise (none did during our stay). She also provided great advice. (6) The property is in one of the more remote towns on the Big Island, which I enjoyed. This is not the tourist-filled Kona-side of Hawai'i. (Fear not: a grocery store and hospital are located just 10 mins away in Honoka'a. Waimea, a larger town with all the conveniences of home, is about 15-20 mins away.) Nothing worth seeing was more than an hour and a half away, which was fine with me. My stay at this house has ruined Hawaii (and vacation in general) for me: nothing can top it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We had a wonderful stay. Couldn't ask for a better location, the house is immaculate (and enormous), and the views are the best we saw on the island during our entire stay. Secluded and quiet but nicely located between Hilo and Kona. Loaded up at the Kona CostCo and cooked in the gorgeous kitchen every day. Also: Yes that is a water slide next to the hot tub.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We generally rent oceanfront houses and thought we would miss the beach but we were completely wrong -- we just needed a jeep. If you enjoy beaches then you MUST rent a 4x4 so you can enjoy the incredible secluded Waipio black sand beach that is right below the house. The beach has incredibly fine black sand, warm water, and wild horses! Not one or two -- lots of wild horses. And no one on the beach!! I have never experienced anything like this. It was magical. We are looking forward to coming back with the kids when they are older so we can experience the amazing hiking. When you have had your fill of beautiful black sand you can then enjoy the pool and hot tub back at the house. The house was perfect for our group of 6 adults and 3 kids (all under two). We loved the pool (although it was very cold), waterslide and hot tub. The natural entry to the pool was perfect for our 2 year old to play and the deep end enabled the boys to jump from the rocks. The pool really is amazing!! The weather wasn't the best -- cool and rainy -- but we were still able to have a wonderful vacation. We enjoyed picking fruit (guava, papaya, bananas, lemons, limes) and loved spotting whales. You do have to watch the cliff with children but it wasn't a huge issue for us. If you are looking for a secluded retreat with non stop views this is your place!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We arrived late in the evening to this breath taking home, with music playing, fresh flowers and fresh fruit awaiting us. What made very unique to our family that evening was finding the secret hidden bedroom. We spent several memorable hours with my grandchildren in the pool. What a fantastic water slide, I just flew out of it. You would wake up in the mornings to this unbelievable view, we could watch the whales from the deck, play games on the beautiful landscape and go for a walk to pick our own fresh fruit. The house has been built with so many special features. If you are with a group there are several places to get away for " me time" or have just a quiet place to read a book or thoroughly enjoy the view. When you come from Alberta, Canada this home fills all your needs and especially no snow to shovel. We were very well taken care of, the owner made sure we understood how everything worked and allowed us to have a very peaceful, relaxing holiday even though she was on 24 hour call if we had any problems. If you are planning a get away to The Big Island, and looking to rent a home, please take a good look at this one. I know you will enjoy your get away here.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
