My house is a five-story 1892 townhouse on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I had the ornate brownstone facade restored recently. It has eight apartments (I occupy the garden apartment). The house is part of a neighborhood of townhouses on the side streets, large multiple dwellings on the avenues, occasional grand apartment buildings on Central Park West, and some notable institutions such as the Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center dotted around the neighborhood. The area is well served by buses and subways, with a large population of restaurants of many different ethnicities and varying levels of sophistication. No area of Manhattan is far away in time or difficult to reach.
The # 3 studio: Located in the Parlor Floor Front, one flight up the stoop - no elevator - overlooking West 81st Street. Its two big windows with security bars under a stained glass crescent are in the frontispiece photo. The main room is 12 feet wide and 22 fee long. A large decorative fireplace dominates the room with its 13 foot ceiling ( with a chandelier/fan in the middle). Towards the middle of the building is the high bar separating the kitchen from the LR and the spiral staircase leading to the loft bed, along with the full bathroom. The queen-sized loft space is less than 4 feet high - you can sit up but not stand up. A reading lamp is there, along with a radio clock. The kitchen has a double gas burner and a large microwave oven; an under the counter fridge/ freezer, and cutlery, plates and glasses for six. A good selection of stainless steel cooking pots and pans, cooking utensils complemented by storage containers.High definition TV satellite service. Internet wifi; free USA phone.

One flight up the stoop, this apartment, the former Parlor Front of a large and imposing brownstone, looks over 81st Street. It has a queen-size loft bed reached by a spiral staircase with a four foot clearance over the bed. It has a fully equipped deck kitchen with a two-burner gas stove, large microwave, half size refrigerator/freezer, sink, and small dishwasher. There is a queen size sofa bed.
The neighborhood in general is largely brownstones (townhouses) on the streets and big apartment buildings on the Avenues, with occasional exceptional institution such as the Museum of Natural History, the New York Historical Society, Lincoln Center, and some grand piles on Central Park West dating from the 1920's.
The building is a block from Central Park, across from which are many Museums on the East Side's Fifth Avenue. On the West Side, famous Zabars' Deli and Fairway Market for vegetables, fruits, meats, fishes and organic foods are nearby.
