In Seaside Proper "Pleasure Principal" is Old Florida Gem!

Located in a secluded, but central, spot in the heart of Seaside, Pleasure Principal is a classic, old Florida cottage built around a large, inviting screened porch. The beach is just one block away down the lush sand path walkway between Pensacola and Odessa streets. Seaside’s westside pool is at the corner only steps away. The shops and restaurants of Seaside’s downtown are a five-minute walk or a one-minute bike ride. Pleasure Principal is a “dog-trot” house design, divided through the middle by a porch that opens the house up to salty gulf breezes and looks out to a sideyard overgrown with saw palmetto, muscadine vines, sand live oaks, gnarled sand pines, sago palms, beauty berry, and southern magnolias. The owner describes the sensibility and design of Pleasure Principal as “cracker Caribbean,” which was inspired by the clapboard, rural homesteads of north Florida melded with the exoticness of the island architecture of the West Indies. It’s not about fancy stuff, but the right stuff—dine on the porch, shower outdoors without being an exhibitionist, cool off under whirring ceiling fans, grill in the yard beneath a canopy of sand live oaks, gaze at constellations in the night sky from the tower high above Seaside. These are the kinds of beach experiences Pleasure Principal affords. The name is a twist on a psychology term popularized in the 60s—pleasure principle: the instinctive drive to seek pleasure and avoid pain, expressed by the id as a basic motivating force that reduces psychic tension. Principle is morphed to principal, so there’s a shift from idea or belief to leadership role or position of authority. You get the idea. And there is no better mantra for a perfect vacation than seeking pleasure and avoiding pain.Pleasure Principal has two bedroom suites on the second floor. Each has a full bath, flat panel TV, and lots of privacy because the bedrooms are on opposite sides of the screened porch. The front bedroom has a full bed, and opens to a private screened porch. The rear bedroom has a queen bed and a side niche with a desk. The tower, with dramatic views of the gulf, Seaside, and Watercolor, is accessed via a spiral stair adjacent to the rear bedroom. The living room below has a sleeper sofa that folds out to make a full bed. There’s a full bath across the screened porch on the first floor. So, when needed, the living room can function as a makeshift third bedroom, allowing the house to sleep a maximum of six people. The kitchen/dining area is located across the screened porch opposite the living room. The fully-equipped kitchen has ceramic tile counters, a gas oven and cooktop, dishwasher, and microwave. There are two large dining tables each of which sits six people, one in the kitchen, and the other on the screened porch. In addition to flat panel TVs, DVD players, VHS tape players, wi-fi, a stereo system you can plug your iPod or MP3 player into, there’s an ample supply of old-fashioned board games, jigsaw puzzles, lots of trashy pulp fiction for leisurely beach reading, a large movie library of VHS tapes, and the walls are covered with original art.

My wife and I stayed for a Wed through Mon visit and very much enjoyed the house. It is on the Western end of Seaside and is just a short walk to the beach and town center. The house is an interesting dog trot design with 4 separate spaces. Kitchen, Living Room downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. Much of our time was spent relaxing and reading in the central screened in porch around which the living areas are built. Going in October made this possible due to moderate temperatures but I wouldn't see spending that much time there in the heat of summer or cold of winter. The house is uniquely and beautifully decorated and quite comfortable overall save one item. The queen bed has an awful mattress on it. You could feel the lumps and springs and we awoke each morning feeling we had been run over by a truck. The only other downer was that there were two keys in the lockbox but only one of them worked. In the grand scheme of things we would definitely stay here again as the positives absolutely outweigh the negatives. But we strongly suggest the owner replace that mattress!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

This cottage was fabulous! My wife and I stayed here for nearly a week. The first day we came in we went to Publix grocery shopping, parked the car and the car stayed in the driveway for the rest of the week! Everything is a pleasant and short walk away. The cottage is very comfortable and the style is original and quite interesting. The place was CLEAN. I mean spotless! Kudos to the housekeeping/management staff! This is an ideal cottage for 2 couples vacationing together. Each bedroom is its own little "suite" and not directly connected to the other rooms. When I rented this cottage I was a little hesitant because we wanted to be on the beach. Of course the cottages right on the beach are nearly double (or more) the price. This cottage is very close to the beach! When I say short walk I mean SHORT! It like one block away and a very easy walk. No regrets there! We had a great time during out week at Pleasure Principal and look forward to returning soon!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, pet owners, families with teenagers.

Such Fun! A truly unique cottage! Loved the layout. This was the first trip to Florida for our 3 month old granddaughter and the atrium style screened room was such a pleasant place to spend time. Loved the way it connected with the kitchen and family room areas.........giving a great space to gather, chat, view t.v. and dine. Having the main floor full bath was also a real plus. We especially loved the kitchen and it's fascinating decor! The outdoor areas were very spacious, a great place to read a book or have a glass of wine. With the amazing screened room, and the outdoor spaces being totally fenced in . . . . it was perfect for our two small dogs! The way the two upstairs bedrooms, each with their own private baths, were separated giving excellent privacy for all the guests. And what a treat to climb the spiral stairs and experience a terrific view of the surrounding areas. A quiet location, yet conveniently located to the pool, restaurants and the beach. We would highly recommend "Pleasure Principal"! We cannot wait to return to Seaside next year and continue making wonderful family memories!Recommended for: Girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

For the transitional seasons, this cottage is great. Don't expect a current look, as this cottage is all original, but we like the old Florida feel from the late 80's, so it worked great for us. Very unique layout that works best when the climate allows you to open all the windows and doors. Love all the original photography by the owner on display, as my son is an aspiring photographer. Not sure it would be great for those who like to run the air conditioner or heat, as this would keep you sealed off in one of the four separate living areas, but for us it was perfect. Great for families who like to have a little privacy and alone time too, in addition to being together. We loved it, and would buy it in a heartbeat if it ever came up for sale! :) Thank you for opening your home to renters! We took good care of it!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1988
About the owner: I'm an author and photographer. I've done many photographic books, including one on Seaside and another on Rosemary Beach.
Why the Owner Chose Seaside:
I grew up in southwest Georgia about 120 miles from Seaside. My extended family has owned property in Walton County, Florida, where Seaside is located, since 1954. I came to this area of the gulf coast every summer as a child. My mother has memories of Panama City from the 1920s when there were no paved streets, potable water was sold daily from mule carts, and you needed a rowboat to cross St. Andrew's Bay to get to the beach. I have two daughters, Adrianne and Claire, who have spent every summer of their lives in Seaside. In many ways, this is where we're all from. It's our home.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I enjoy the smell of salt in the air; the gulf breeze as it wafts through the open windows and doorways; grilling in the yard and taking the evening meal on the big dining table on the screened porch; going up to the tower at night, gazing up at the stars while listening to the pounding of the surf in the distance; playing scrabble on rainy afternoons; spending time with family and friends that's somehow better at the beach than anywhere else.
